BOSTON (AP) — A former dean at a Boston high school known affectionately by students as “Rev” has been ordered by a federal judge to pay more than $10 million in damages to a former student he was convicted of trying to kill in a dispute over drug sales.
The default judgment Friday against former English High School Dean Shaun Harrison includes $7.5 million in damages for pain, suffering & emotional distress; $2.5 million in punitive damages & more than $80,000 for the victim’s medical bills.
Harrison was convicted in state court in 2018 of assault & other charges & sentenced to up to 26 years in prison.
Harrison, who had a background as a community organizer and youth minister, was dean of academics, a job that required keeping order and mentoring students.
But he was leading a double life. He had ties to the violent Latin Kings gang, recruited students to sell drugs for him & kept a gun at his apartment.
The victim, who had been recruited by Harrison to sell weed, was 17 when he was shot in the back of the head at point-blank range in Boston in March 2015.
The bullet barely missed the victim’s brain stem & carotid artery, but shattered his jaw. He underwent 2 surgeries, had his jaw wired shut for 9 months, remains paralyzed on half of his face, suffers from facial neuropathy, hearing loss & requires weights on his eyelids to help with opening & shutting his eyes. He continues to experience pain from the bullet that remains lodged in his head & developed an addiction to opioids prescribed for the pain.
It’s unclear whether the victim will ever get any money from Harrison.

BELDEN, Miss (AP) — A Mississippi man said his pet cat helped prevent a robbery at his home & he credits the calico with possibly saving his life.
Bandit, a 20-pound cat, lives with her retired owner Fred Everitt in the Tupelo suburb of Belden. When at least two people tried to break into their shared home last week, the cat did everything she could to alert Everitt of the danger.
“You hear of guard dogs,” said Everitt, 68. “This is a guard cat.”
The attempted robbery occurred sometime between 2:30 and 3 a.m. on July 25, Everitt said. He was first awoken by Bandit’s meows in the kitchen. Then, she raced into the bedroom, jumped onto the bed & began pulling the comforter off of him and clawing at his arms. Everitt knew something was wrong.
“She had never done that before,” Everitt said. “I went, ‘What in the world is wrong with you?’"
Everitt got up to investigate & saw 2 young men outside his back door. One had a handgun, and the other was using a crowbar to try & pry the door open.
Everitt said by the time he retrieved a handgun & returned to the kitchen, the would-be intruders had already fled.
He said the situation could have been different without Bandit.
“It did not turn into a confrontational situation, thank goodness,” Everitt said. “But I think it’s only because of the cat.”
Everitt adopted Bandit from the Tupelo-Lee Humane Society 4 years ago.

10 people, including 3 children, were killed when a house went up in flames in Pennsylvania early Friday morning. 3 adults survived the fire & a criminal investigation is ongoing.
Authorities responded to the 2-story home in Nescopeck at 2:42 a.m. local time & learned that although 3 people had made it out, there were others trapped inside, according to state police.
Several responding agencies & K9 units located the victims inside of the home.
State police identified them as: Dale Baker, 19; Star Baker, 22; David Daubert, 79; Brian Daubert, 42; Shannon Daubert, 45; Laura Daubert, 47; and Marian Slusser, 54. Three juveniles also died — they were identified as a 7-year-old girl, a 6-year-old boy & a 5-year-old boy.
Nescopeck Volunteer Fire Co. firefighter Harold Baker told the Citizens' Voice newspaper of Wilkes-Barre that the 10 victims included his son, daughter, father-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, 3 grandchildren & 2 other relatives.
Baker said that the address initially given for the call was a neighboring home, but that he realized it was his family's residence as the fire truck approached.
Neighbors reported hearing a loud popping sound or explosion, before seeing the front porch of the home rapidly consumed by flames. Some also reported hearing a young man screaming in front of the home, "They're all dead."
Baker, who was relieved of his firefighting duties because of his relationship to the victims, said 14 people were living in the home. One of them was out delivering newspapers & 3 others escaped.
The home was completely destroyed in the fire.

Long beach- based musician Donn John$on cemented his position as one of the most known underground artists from his city.
Known for his out the box artistry and business savy mindset, Donn John$on is definitely an artist you shouldn’t sleep on.
With childhood influences such as snoop dogg and lil wayne, Donn John$on recalls penning and setting his sights on a rap career as early as age 17.
Donn John$on started off with hoop dreams and thought basketball would be his way to make it out the eastside of Long Beach. After high school he took a liking to music and decided he would pursue that instead.
Around the age of 24 is when he really started taking music seriously and began releasing music videos such as “LA NIGHTS” and Go to work.” He also managed to get a Joe Moses feature and released a single titled “Westside in Me” in 2016.
After seeing the reception for “Westside in Me” his hunger and passion to be one of the greats grew immensely. He started doing shows and showcases and opened up for artists like Bad Azz, RJ and Troy Ave just to name a few.
“Performing is one of the best things about being an artist. It’s nothing like feeling the energy from the crowd, and seeing them react to all the hard work you put in from writing and recording songs.” - Says John$on in an interview with the Andsomemoreofit show on Dash Radio.
After doing various shows, Donn John$on took a big chance and decided to headline his own events in 2018 and 2019 at the Federal Bar in Long Beach, CA. Both shows sold out and he gained even more respect in his city and from his peers.
Fast forward to October, 2020 Donn John$on released a single titled “Touch It” featuring one of the hottest artist in LA Bino Rideaux. The song instantly became a hit and is close to 1 million streams across all streaming platforms. That is a big accomplishment for an independent artist and “Touch it” still gets played daily across the world.
He also started up his own podcast is January, 2022 “Mawlz and Donn” and released his Debut Album “First of Many” the same month which has gained a lot of attention and praise from his following.
It’s safe to say Donn John$on is one of the artist you should be on the lookout for and The sky is the limit. He also plans to release another project in June, 2022 called “The Follow Up.” Get used to the name, he will be around for a long time.

Aug 5 (Reuters) - U.S. conspiracy theorist Alex Jones must pay the parents of a 6-year-old boy killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre $45.2 million in punitive damages - on top of $4.1 million in compensatory damages already awarded - for falsely claiming the shooting was a hoax, a Texas jury decided on Friday.
Neil Heslin & Scarlett Lewis, separated parents of slain 6-year-old Jesse Lewis, testified that followers of Jones harassed them & sent them death threats for years in the false belief that they were lying about their son's death in the Dec. 14, 2012, shooting that killed 20 children & 6 staff at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
The 12-person jury on Thursday decided on the compensatory damages following a 2-week trial in the defamation lawsuit.
The parents had sought $145.9 million in punitive damages and $150 million in compensatory damages. Compensatory damages are awarded to cover a plaintiff's suffering & losses. Punitive damages are awarded to punish a defendant's actions.
The Sandy Hook gunman, Adam Lanza, used a Remington Bushmaster rifle to carry out the massacre. It ended when Lanza killed himself with the approaching sound of police sirens.
Jones, who has been a prominent figure in American right-wing circles & a supporter of Donald Trump, had called the Sandy Hook massacre a hoax by the U.S. government staged using crisis actors to serve as a pretext for taking away Americans' guns.
"We ask that you send a very, very simple message & that is: stop Alex Jones. Stop the monetization of misinformation and lies," Wesley Todd Ball, a lawyer for the parents, told jurors earlier on Friday before they began deliberations on punitive damages.

New York (CNN Business) Right-wing talk show host Alex Jones will have to pay the parents of a Sandy Hook shooting victim a little more than $4 million in compensatory damages, a jury decided Thursday, capping a stunning & dramatic case that showcased for the public the real-world harm inflicted by viral conspiracy theories.
The award from the jury was far less than what the plaintiffs, Scarlett Lewis & Neil Heslin, had asked for. At the start of the trial, attorneys for Lewis & Heslin asked the jury to award their clients $150 million in compensatory damages.
A separate, shorter trial during which punitive damages will be discussed is now expected. Punitive damages are awarded when the court finds the defendant's behavior to be especially offensive.
The decision from the jury is a partial ending to a years-long process that began in 2018 when Lewis & Heslin sued Jones & his company, Free Speech Systems, which is the parent of the right-wing media organization Infowars.
Jones baselessly said in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook shooting, in which 26 people were killed, that the incident was staged. Facing multiple lawsuits, Jones later acknowledged the shooting occurred. He testified in court this week that he now believed it to be "100% real."
But Jones failed to comply with court orders during the discovery process of the lawsuit. His failure to do so led to Heslin & Lewis winning default judgments judgements against Jones.

A man accused of abducting a 12-year-old who escaped by chewing her way out of restraints after a week in captivity at a rural mobile home was charged with killing a woman & a juvenile found dismembered inside the residence, authorities said Wednesday.
Already charged with first-degree kidnapping, José Paulino Pascual-Reyes also was charged with capital murder & corpse abuse in the deaths of a woman & a boy younger than 14 who were found inside the mobile home in the central Alabama town of Dadeville, according to Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett..
The woman, identified as Sandra Vazquez Ceja, was smothered with a pillow & the boy, identified only by initials, was hit & kicked to death. Both bodies were cut into small pieces at the joints to hide evidence.
Authorities haven’t released information about the surviving girl, a possible motive or whether any of the victims & Pascual-Reyes were related, but additional charges were possible.
Abducted from an undisclosed location around July 24, the girl was restrained to bedposts for about a week so she could be sexually abused. The 2 people were killed around the time of the alleged abduction.
The girl was kept in a “drugged state” with alcohol & assaulted in the head before chewing her way out of the restraints.
With her braces damaged from the chewing & marks on her wrists indicating she’d been tied up, the girl was spotted on the road Monday morning.
A driver picked her up & notified authorities. Police later discovered 2 decomposing bodies inside the mobile home where Pascual-Reyes lived & the girl was believed to be held.
The girl, who authorities said had not been reported missing, received medical attention & was placed in the custody of child welfare officials.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The U.S. Justice Department announced civil rights charges Thursday against 4 Louisville 4 over the 2020 drug raid that led to the death of Breonna Taylor.
Federal officials “share but cannot fully imagine the grief” felt by Taylor’s family, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said in announcing the charges.
“Breonna Taylor should be alive today,” he said. The charges range from unlawful conspiracies, use of force & obstruction of justice.
The charges are against former officers Joshua Jaynes, Brett Hankison, Kelly Goodlett & Sgt. Kyle Meany.
Local activists & members of the Taylor family celebrated the charges & thanked federal officials.
“This is a day when Black women saw equal justice in America,” lawyer Benjamin Crump said.
Taylor was shot to death by Louisville officers who had knocked down her door while executing the search warrant. Taylor’s boyfriend fired a shot that hit 1 of the officers as they came through the door & they returned fire, striking Taylor multiple times.
Hankison is facing 2 civil rights charges alleging he used excessive force when he retreated from Taylor’s door, turned a corner 2 fired 10 shots into the side of her two-bedroom apartment. Bullets flew into a neighbor’s apartment, nearly striking 1 man.
He was acquitted by a jury of state charges of wanton endangerment earlier this year.
Jaynes had applied for the warrant to search Taylor’s house. He was fired in January 2021 by former Louisville Police interim chief Yvette Gentry for violating department standards in the preparation of a search warrant execution & for being “untruthful” in the Taylor warrant.
Jaynes & Goodlett allegedly conspired to falsify an investigative document that was written after Taylor’s death. Federal investigators also allege Meany, who testified at Hankison’s trial earlier this year, lied to the FBI during its investigation.
