An Ecuadoran journalist has now legally changed his gender from male to female so that he can attempt to secure full custody of his 2 young daughters.
René Salinas Ramos, 47, legally changed his gender identification to female to circumvent a legal system which, he claimed, unfairly favors the mother in custody cases.
"Being a father in this country, Ecuador, is punished & I’m only seen as a provider," Ramos stated.
Ramos claimed that he and his ex-wife, whose name has not been reported, are in the midst of a contentious custody battle for their 2 girls. Ramos hinted that his ex is physically abusive to the children. He also claimed that he had not seen either girl in at least 5 months & may not have seen his elder daughter in a year & a half.
While Ramos called the move "great proof of love" for his daughters, some of his fellow countrymen have denounced Ramos for violating what they call "the spirit" of the Gender Identity Law.
The law, according to a statement from the Ecuadorian Federation of LGBTI Organizations, was designed to "protect the common good of a historically discriminated population," namely, "transgender & transsexual people."
But despite complaints from activists, Ramos insisted he would not relent in his pursuit of his children.
"Now that I am a woman, I can be a mother," he said, "and I am on equal footing to fight for the parental authority of my daughters."

Former porn star Ron Jeremy has "severe dementia" and will be declared unfit to stand trial for rape.
Jeremy, who has appeared in more than 1700 X-rated films since the 1970s, was ordered to undergo psychiatric exams ahead of a trial on multiple sex charges against 21 women & girls.
Mental health experts for both prosecution & defense have found he is mentally incapacitated, with little chance of recovery.
"As a result of the agreement of the experts, the defendant will be declared incompetent to stand trial... his prognosis for improvement is not good," Los Angeles County deputy district attorney Paul Thompson wrote.
"If he does not improve, we will not be able to try him for his crimes. Because criminal proceedings are suspended as long as he is incompetent, we also cannot get a guilty plea from him or discuss other measures to get justice for the victims in this case."
Jeremy was initially charged in January 2020, & prosecutors subsequently added a battery of other sex-related complaints against him, alleging criminality over several decades of his prolific career.
Jeremy has previously denied all charges against him.
A declaration of mental incompetency is not set in stone, and if a defendant's health improves through medication or treatment, they can face trial at a later date.
However, dementia is a progressive illness & sufferers generally degenerate over time.

CNN — A 6-year-old boy is in police custody after he shot a teacher at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, Friday afternoon, according to Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew.
“The individual is a 6-year-old student. He is right now in police custody,” Drew said. “We have been in contact with our commonwealth attorney and some other entities to help us best get services to this young man.”
During a news conference Friday evening, Drew said the female teacher – who is in her 30s – was shot inside a classroom & added that “this was not an accidental shooting.”
Drew says there was an altercation between the teacher & the student before a single round was fired.
The teacher’s injuries are considered life-threatening at this time. Earlier Friday, Drew said the teacher was in critical condition.
A man who allegedly raped his 14-year-old daughter was taken into custody Tuesday night by Detroit police. When officers first found him, it was abundantly clear that friends & neighbors had administered some preemptive justice.
The alleged child rapist had reportedly been chased around a neighborhood before the victim's relatives finally caught up with him.
In graphic footage obtained by 7 Mile Radio News, persons purportedly related to the victim can be seen castigating him for allegedly raping his own daughter while waiting for police & paramedics to arrive. The suspect is visibly busted up, kneeling naked in a pool of his own blood.
Carmen Witherspoon, a nearby resident, opened her front door to see the alleged rapist surrounded by the victim's incensed relatives. "They beat him over there real good."
Another witness said the suspected child rapist "was bloody, nothing but blood, there was a puddle on the ground."
It is rumored the relatives turned vigilantes "stomped his top lip off" & left him "with his left eye hanging out of his head."
One onlooker remarked in the video, as if in disbelief, "Y'all touched your motherf***ing kids."
"I hope you get everything that you deserve," one woman cried out as what remained of the alleged rapist was carted away by paramedics.
Detroit Police Capt. Rebecca McKay called the sexual assault "absolutely tragic. ... It's going to definitely take time to heal."
McKay said that sexual assault "occurs at all ages. I would just ask the parents, teachers, advisers, administrators, friends & family, just always keep your eyes open. Listen, if you see something — say something."

US President Joe Biden is due to visit Mexico for a North American leaders' summit next week. He will now arrive on Sunday.
The US state department says Guzman & his brother Joaquín are currently overseeing approximately 11 methamphetamine labs in the state of Sinaloa, producing an estimated 3,000-5,000lb of the drug per month.
They have also said that information indicates Mr Guzmán-López ordered the murders of informants, a drug trafficker & a popular Mexican singer who refused to sing at his wedding.
In December, the US announced a reward of up to $5m for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of Mr Guzmán-López & 3 of his brothers.
Bryan Kohberger's DNA was found on a knife sheath at the scene of the Idaho murders & authorities made a match by rooting through trash at his family's house & finding his dad's DNA, which had enough of a match to the DNA taken from the sheath for cops to pin the murders on Bryan.
Authorities had Kohberger in their crosshairs less than 2 weeks after the murders. Cops were on the hunt for a white Hyundai Elantra. On November 13 -- the date of the murders -- there were several videos showing the white Elantra making 3 passes by the murder house before finally stopping at 4:04 AM.
Multiple surveillance videos show the car leaving the area house at 4:20 AM at a high rate of speed.
On November 25, cops released info to law enforcement they were on the lookout for a white Hyundai Elantra. On November 29, a WSU cop pulled up a hit with Kohberger's vehicle & license plate number.
Now, what we didn't know -- 1 of the survivors in the murder house says she saw a man 5'10" or taller, not very muscular but athletically built with bushy eyebrows, wearing black clothing with a mask.
She says the man walked right past her as she stood in a "frozen shock phase," & then he walked past her & left the house.
She had only looked out of her bedroom because she'd heard a female voice, possibly murder victim Kaylee Goncalves, say something like "there's someone here." She also heard a male voice say, "It's ok, I'm going to help you."
Cell records also indicate Kohberger returned to the scene of the crime just a few hours later. Worth noting is the fact police were not called to the home until 11:58 AM.
The cell phone records also show since June 22nd, he had been near the murder house at least 12 times prior to the murders.
