MIAMI (AP) — A man arrested by police early Tuesday is accused of abducting, sexually assaulting and shooting a 12-year-old boy who had snuck out of his home to walk to a friend’s house in South Florida.
A passerby saw the boy wandering along a Miami street before 3 a.m. Saturday and alerted authorities. The boy later told police he had heard a loud bang and was pushed out of a car. He had been shot in the jaw and was temporarily blinded.
“He had lost his sight and he was using his touch trying to find his way around to seek help,” Miami-Dade detective Alvaro Zabaleta told news outlets.
Police said they arrested Aliex Santiesteban, 43, early Tuesday. He’s charged with sexual battery with a deadly weapon, kidnapping a child under 13 and attempted murder. Major Brian Rafky of the Miami-Dade police’s Special Victims Bureau said detectives were able to track down the suspect through “good old-fashioned police work and DNA evidence.”
The boy is recovering at Jackson Memorial Hospital, police said.
The good Samaritan, whom television stations did not identify by his full name, was recorded on surveillance video escorting the crying boy into a food mart to get help.
“He was screaming, ‘Help, someone, help me, please.’ So I (brought) him to the store where they could call the police,” the man told television stations.
Investigators said boy had placed pillows in his bed to trick his parents into thinking he was sleeping before leaving the house Friday night. He said he walked to a friend’s house about 2 miles away.
He was on his way home when he was forced into a car, police said. The boy told investigators he tried to get out, but the car’s child locks were engaged.
An arrest report said Santiesteban pulled his car onto a roadside swale in the Brownsville neighborhood near Miami and forced the child into the backseat, where he assaulted him. Police said a brief struggle ensued and Santiesteban shot the boy.
Santiesteban denied the accusations, police said. It was not clear whether he has an attorney.
Police urged the community to call authorities if other victims or witnesses recognize Santiesteban from previous crimes.
At a Tuesday news conference, Alfredo Ramirez, the director of the Miami-Dade Police Department, thanked the man who found him and the community for stepping in to help.
“As a father of a 12-year-old myself, this is extremely disturbing and hits you at the soul,” Ramirez said. “This child has suffered physical and emotional trauma that will take years to overcome.”
After he ended his remarks, Ramirez briefly returned to the podium to lean again into the microphone.
“That’s the face of evil, ladies and gentlemen. Right there,” he said as he pointed to the mugshot.

An Italian mafia fugitive who has been evading police since 2014 was arrested last week after police recognized him on YouTube. Marc Feren Claude Biart, who is wanted by police for allegedly trafficking cocaine, had started a cooking show on YouTube with his wife.
53-year-old Biart hid his face in the videos – but did not hide his tattoos. Italian police saw the videos & arrested Biart in the small town of Boca Chica, Dominican Republic.
The 'Ndrangheta, which is based in Calabria, Italy, controls most of the cocaine entering Europe. Members are known by nicknames, such as "The Uncle" which is the name that alleged boss Luigi Mancuso goes by.
Biart has been wanted by police for nearly six years for allegedly trafficking cocaine into the Netherlands. He worked on behalf of the 'Ndrangheta mafia, which is considered the most powerful organized crime groups in the world, BBC News reports.
The crime family is now facing one of Italy's biggest mafia trials following a long investigation into the group. The trial began in January, & 355 people have been charged. It took more than three hours to read defendants' names in court.
The charges include murder, drug trafficking, extortion & money laundering.

ADA, Okla. (AP) — The wife of a pastor in Ada & a man she was allegedly in a relationship with have been arrested in connection with the pastor’s fatal shooting, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Capt. Beth Green said Friday.
Kristie Dawnell Evans, 47, & Kahlil Deamie Square, 27, were arrested Thursday & jailed on murder warrants in the fatal shooting of David Evans, 50, the pastor of Harmony Freewill Baptist Church in Ada, Green said.
David Evans was found shot to death in his bed at the Evans’ home on March 22 after Kristie Evans called police & initially reported an intruder had shot her husband, according to Green.
Kristie Evans had asked Square to kill her husband because he was controlling & verbally abusive, according to an affidavit by OSBI investigator Justin Brown.

Ex-UFC champion Anderson Silva has agreed to fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in the boxing ring following his departure from the MMA organization.
Dana White dropped the 45-year-old Brazilian after three consecutive defeats but he has shown no interest in retiring, so has made a switch to boxing.
He will fight 35-year-old Mexican former middleweight champion Chavez in Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico, on June 19.
Speaking to TMZ, Silva said: “When I look back at my journey, I see that nothing has been in vain.
“'I am extremely happy for the opportunity to test my boxing skills with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. I train continuously, always striving for resilience and to overcome obstacles. Fighting is my everlasting breath.”
Chavez is keen to fight in order to ameliorate his record of 52-5, and will make more light heavyweight fights if they are offered to him.
“I have rededicated myself to the sport that I love and I will be ready to face anyone in the light-heavyweight division starting with Silva,” he said.
“I will be prepared to be victorious on June 19.”
Silva is a former UFC middleweight champion, holding the belt from 2006 to 2013, and has previously taken part in two boxing matches, against Luiz Teixeira in 1998 and Julio Cesar De Jesus in 2005, with a record of one defeat, and one win by knockout.

Lil Nas X is in the middle of a holy war now -- legally speaking -- because Nike's going after the company making his controversial "Satan Shoes" ... a devilish connection Nike wants no part of.
The shoe giant is suing MSCHF Product Studio ... the company that collaborated with the rapper to produce the Satan Shoe, aka the "blood shoes."
If you haven't heard ... Lil Nas has been hyping the customized Nike Air Max 97 shoes which feature the pentagram symbol, a Bible verse that references Satan, and allegedly a drop of blood from one of MSCHF's employees. There are also only 666 pairs being made & they're selling for over a grand.
According to the docs, obtained by TMZ, Nike claims the company's tricking consumers into thinking it approved the Satan-themed shoes, but Nike insists it didn't authorize it & "is in no way connected with this project."
Nike claims MSCHF buys the shoes from Nike, then the artists it works with make their own creative modifications before selling them at a higher price.
Nike's suing for trademark infringement because the famous Swoosh logo is still prominently featured on X's shoes. It wants damages & perhaps more importantly for Nas X ... Nike wants the judge to block all sales of the Satan Shoe.
The Satan Shoe sparked outrage within the sports world ... with stars like Trevor Lawrence & Nick Young voicing their disgust with the product.
"Line has to be drawn somewhere. Smh," the future first-overall pick in the NFL Draft said.

Minneapolis (AP) — The video of George Floyd gasping for breath was front & center Monday as the former Minneapolis police officer who pressed his knee on the Black man’s neck went on trial Monday on charges of murder & manslaughter.
Prosecutor Jerry Blackwell showed the jurors the footage at the earliest opportunity, during opening statements, after telling them that the number to remember was 9 minutes, 29 seconds — the amount of time officer Derek Chauvin had Floyd pinned to the pavement last May.
A handcuffed Floyd said 27 times that he couldn’t breathe & went limp, Blackwell said.
“He put his knees upon his neck & his back, grinding & crushing him, until the very breath -- no, ladies & gentlemen -- until the very life was squeezed out of him,” the prosecutor said.
Chauvin attorney Eric Nelson countered by arguing: “Derek Chauvin did exactly what he had been trained to do over his 19-year career.”
Floyd was resisting arrest & Chauvin arrived to assist other officers who were struggling to get Floyd into a squad car as the crowd around them grew larger & more hostile, Nelson said.
The defense attorney also disputed that Chauvin was to blame for Floyd’s death.
Floyd, 46, had none of the telltale signs of asphyxiation & had fentanyl & methamphetamine in his system, Nelson said. He said Floyd’s drug use combined with his heart disease & high blood pressure, as well as the adrenaline flowing through his body, to cause his death from a heart rhythm disturbance.
The medical examiner’s autopsy noted fentanyl & methamphetamine in Floyd’s system but listed his cause of death as “cardiopulmonary arrest, complicating law enforcement subdual, restraint & neck compression.”
Chauvin, 45, is charged with unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder & manslaughter. The most serious charge, the second-degree murder count, carries up to 40 years in prison.
