(CNN) James Caan, the veteran screen actor known for his work in such films as "The Godfather," "Misery" & "Elf," has died. He was 82.

His cause of death was not disclosed.

Caan first found fame playing Chicago Bears halfback Brian Piccolo in "Brian's Song," a widely seen 1971 TV movie. The tearjerking film chronicled Piccolo's real-life battle with terminal cancer & drew praise for its treatment of the interracial friendship between Piccolo & a Black teammate, Gale Sayers.

His next film, 1972's "The Godfather," made Caan a star. Although he was not Italian, Caan was cast as hotheaded Sonny Corleone, oldest of mobster Vito Corleone's 3 sons, who is memorably gunned down by rival gangsters at a tollbooth.

The role earned him an Oscar nomination. Caan also appeared in a flashback in "The Godfather, Part II."

Caan was perhaps best known for playing tough-guy characters in such films as "Thief" & "Rollerball." But he was a versatile actor who commanded a variety of roles, including "Misery," the 1990 Stephen King adaptation about a mild-mannered romance novelist terrorized by an obsessive fan.

He is probably best known to younger audiences for his role in "Elf," the Christmas tale in which he played Will Ferrell's Scrooge-like father, a children's book publisher unhappy to learn he has an exuberant grown son who wears an elf costume & pours maple syrup on his spaghetti.
Caan said he almost turned down the role over the film's title alone but Ferrell convinced him to join the project.

MOSCOW (AP) — Jailed American basketball star Brittney Griner on Thursday pleaded guilty to drug possession & smuggling during her trial in Moscow but said she had no intention of committing a crime.

Reports quoted Griner as saying through an interpreter at the court hearing that she had acted unintentionally because she was packing in haste.

Griner was detained in February at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport after vape canisters with cannabis oil allegedly were found in her luggage. She faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of large-scale transportation of drugs.

The trial of the Phoenix Mercury star & 2-time Olympic gold medalist began last week amid a growing chorus of calls for Washington to do more to secure her freedom nearly 5 months after her arrest.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov bristled at the U.S. description of Briner as “wrongfully detained” and warned that “attempts by the American side to make noise in public ... don’t help the practical settlement of issues.”

“The persistence with which the U.S. administration ... describes those who were handed prison sentences for serious criminal articles & those who are awaiting the end of investigation and court verdicts as ‘wrongfully detained’ reflects Washington’s refusal to have a sober view of the outside world,” Ryabkov snapped.

Russian news media have repeatedly speculated that Griner could be swapped for Russian arms trader Viktor Bout, nicknamed “the Merchant of Death,” who is serving a 25-year sentence in the U.S. on conviction of conspiracy to kill U.S. citizens & providing aid to a terrorist organization.

President Joe Biden spoke Wednesday with the wife of detained WNBA player Brittney Griner, who is on trial in Russia, and assured her that he is working to win Griner's freedom as soon as possible, the White House said.

Biden's conversation with Griner's wife, Cherelle Griner, followed Brittney Griner's personal appeal to the president in a handwritten letter from the basketball player the White House received on Monday. In the letter, Griner acknowledged her fears that she would spend forever in detention in Russia and asked Biden not “forget about me and the other American Detainees.”

Griner has been detained for four months and is currently on trial in Russia, accused of possessing vape cartridges containing cannabis oil.

“The President called Cherelle to reassure her that he is working to secure Brittney’s release as soon as possible, as well as the release of Paul Whelan and other U.S. nationals who are wrongfully detained or held hostage in Russia and around the world,” the White House said in a statement. “He also read her a draft of the letter the President is sending to Brittney Griner today.”

Biden offered his support to the family and committed to making sure they receive “all possible assistance” while the administration pursues steps to win Brittney Griner's release, the White House said.

Griner is in the midst of a trial in Russia that began last week after she was arrested on Feb. 17 on charges of possessing cannabis oil while returning to play for her Russian team. The trial is scheduled to resume Thursday.

Fewer than 1% of defendants in Russian criminal cases are acquitted, and unlike in U.S. courts, acquittals can be overturned.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jurors found a 32-year-old man guilty of first-degree murder Wednesday for the 2019 fatal shooting of rapper Nipsey Hussle.

The Los Angeles County jury also found Eric R. Holder Jr. guilty of 2 counts of attempted voluntary manslaughter instead of 2 attempted murder counts as prosecutors had sought for 2 other men who were hit by gunfire at the scene.

Holder, wearing a blue suit & face mask, stood up in the small court room next to his lawyer as the verdict was read. He had no visible reaction.

Jurors deliberated for about 6 hours over 2 days before reaching the verdict.

Holder & Hussle had known each other for years — they grew up members of the same South Los Angeles street gang.

The evidence against Holder was overwhelming, from eyewitnesses to surveillance cameras.

His attorney did not even deny that he was the shooter but urged jurors to find him guilty of the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.

The shooting followed a conversation the 2 men had about rumors that Holder had been acting as an informant for authorities. Holder’s lawyer Aaron Jansen said that being publicly accused of being a “snitch” by Hussle brought on a “heat of passion” in Holder that made him not guilty of first-degree murder.

Hussle, whose legal name is Ermias Asghedom, died at age 33. 

He was a widely beloved figure in Los Angeles, especially in the South LA area where he grew up & remained after gaining fame, buying property & opening businesses.

“He wanted to change the neighborhood,” McKinney said in his closing argument. “He kept the same friends. And the neighborhood loved him. They called him Neighborhood Nip.”

In a speech to educators in Chicago on Tuesday, Vice President Harris decried the July 4 mass shooting in Highland Park, Illinois & renewed the call for an assault weapons ban.

A 7th person died in the aftermath of the parade shooting, & the suspect, Robert E. Crimo III, has been charged with 7 counts of first degree murder.

The local prosecutor has promised that dozens more charges would be sought.

“I don’t need to tell NEA (National Education Association) we need to end this horror,” Harris said at the NEA’s annual meeting. “We need to stop this violence.”

Harris pointed to the bipartisan gun safety legislation recently signed by President Joe Biden, but said the country needs to do more. And she called on Congress to act.

“Congress needs to have the courage to act & renew the assault weapons ban,” she said. Harris also called on Congress to repeal the liability shield that prevents gun manufacturers from being sued for damage caused by their products.

“So let’s talk about what an assault weapon is designed to do,” Harris said.

“An assault weapon is designed to kill a lot of human beings quickly. There is no reason that we have weapons of war on the streets of America,” she said.

The vice president added: “We need reasonable gun safety laws.”

HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (AP) — The gunman who attacked an Independence Day parade in suburban Chicago fired more than 70 rounds with an AR-15-style gun that killed at least six people, then evaded initial capture by dressing as a woman and blending into the fleeing crowd, police said Tuesday.

A spokesman for the Lake County Major Crime Task Force told a news conference that the suspected shooter, who was arrested late Monday, used a high-powered rifle “similar to an AR-15” to spray bullets from atop a commercial building into a crowd that had gathered for the parade in Highland Park, a close-knit community on the shores of Lake Michigan that has long drawn the rich and sometimes famous.

More than 30 people were wounded in the attack, which task force spokesman Christopher Covelli said the shooter planned for several weeks.

Investigators who have interrogated the suspect and reviewed his social media posts have not determined a motive for the attack or found any indication that he targeted anyone by race, religion or other protected status, Covelli said.

Authorities have not filed criminal charges.

Earlier in the day, FBI agents peeked into trash cans and under picnic blankets as they searched for more evidence at the site where the assailant opened fire. The shots were initially mistaken for fireworks before hundreds of revelers fled in terror.

A day later, baby strollers, lawn chairs and other items left behind by panicked parade goers remained inside a wide police perimeter. Outside the police tape, some residents drove up to collect blankets and chairs they abandoned.

David Shapiro, 47, said the spray of gunfire quickly turned the parade into “chaos.”

“People didn’t know right away where the gunfire was coming from, whether the gunman was in front or behind you chasing you,” he said Tuesday as he retrieved a stroller and lawn chairs.

The shooting was just the latest to shatter the rituals of American life. Schools, churches, grocery stores and now community parades have all become killing grounds in recent months. This time, the bloodshed came as the nation tried to find cause to celebrate its founding and the bonds that still hold it together.

Demaryius Thomas had the degenerative brain disease known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE, which is linked to repeated blows to the head.

Thomas' family has released the findings of Boston University CTE Center's brain study through the Concussion Legacy Foundation (CLF) to raise awareness of CTE. Stage 2 CTE is associated with progressive behavior, cognitive & mood abnormalities. Thomas developed depression, anxiety, panic attacks & memory troubles before his death. 

Thomas was found dead in his Roswell, Georgia, home this past Dec. 9, just 15 days before his 34th birthday. At the time, his family believed seizures, which Thomas had battled since a 2019 car crash, might have led to his death. The coroner's office in Fulton County, Georgia, has not yet ruled on the cause of death.

Neuropathologist Dr. Ann McKee, who was part of the Boston University research team, said Thomas most likely died after having a seizure -- a condition not generally associated with CTE.

"CTE itself does not cause death. You don't die from CTE," McKee told ABC News. "What CTE does is it changes your behavior & your personality."

"His mood would change, and he would also isolate himself sometimes," Thomas' mother, Katina Stuckey Smith, told ABC News. "He was, like, 'Mom, I don't know what's going on with my body. You know, I gotta get myself together,' & he said, 'I don't feel like myself anymore.'"

A first-round pick in 2010 out of Georgia Tech, Thomas played 10 seasons in the NFL. He spent 8½ seasons with the Denver Broncos, with whom he won two AFC championships and a Super Bowl. The 4-time Pro Bowl receiver also played with the Houston Texans & New York Jets, finishing his career with 724 catches for 9,763 yards & 63 touchdowns.

Thomas retired from the NFL in June 2021.

A person of interest wanted in connection with a mass shooting at the Highland Park Independence Day parade is in custody, police announced Monday evening.

The latest breaking development comes roughly two hours after police identified a 22-year-old wanted in connection with the shooting that left at least six people dead and roughly two dozen others injured.

Police said 22-year-old Robert "Bobby" E Crimo III was taken into custody following a police pursuit that ended in north suburban Lake Forest.

Crimo is also known as "Awake the Rapper."

CHICAGO (AP) — At least five people are dead and 19 were taken to hospitals after a shooting at a July Fourth parade in a Chicago suburb, police said.

The shooting in Highland Park disrupted the annual parade just after it began at 10 a.m.

Highland Park Police said in a statement that five people were killed and 19 people were taken to hospitals. It was unclear if the five dead were among the 19 hospitalized.

The police said authorities are still searching for the suspect and called it an active incident.

A 10-year-old rape victim in Ohio was denied an abortion, sparking outrage online as many Republican-led states strip away reproductive rights following the Supreme Court's overruling of Roe v. Wade.

Dr. Caitlin Bernard, an obstetrician-gynecologist in Indianapolis, received a call last Monday, three days after the Court's ruling, from a child abuse doctor in Ohio who had a 10-year-old girl in their office who was six weeks and three days pregnant, and therefore ineligible to receive an abortion in the state, according to a report from The Indianapolis Star.

The child was unable to receive an abortion in Ohio because the state bans the procedure after six weeks when fetal cardiac activity may be detected. Some Republican-led states banned abortions at that point, claiming that a heartbeat can be detected within that timeframe.

However, these so-called "fetal heartbeat" bans on abortion have faced criticism from medical experts, many of whom argue there is no heartbeat at six weeks. Rather, doctors can detect a flutter in the region where the heart will eventually form. Additionally, many women and girls do not know they are pregnant at that point.

A ban has not yet taken effect in Indiana, which meant that the girl was able to travel to Dr. Bernard for the procedure. Other information about the child's case was unknown, likely due to her age. Bernard told the Star that "it's hard to imagine that in just a few short weeks we will have no ability to provide that care."

However, lawmakers in Indiana are pushing for the state to enact its own abortion restrictions, which may force women and girls seeking the medical procedure to travel even further to receive it.

Critics argued the girl's situation shows the devastating impact of the Supreme Court's decision, which will result in other children who are victims of rape being forced to carry their pregnancies to term.

Following the Court's decision, many states' "trigger laws," laws banning abortion passed in anticipation of the ruling, went into effect—essentially banning the procedure for large swaths of the country. Other states with conservative legislatures are also moving to ban the procedure, while Democratic states have tightened abortion protections.
