Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law has received a lot of scrutiny in the wake of Trayvon Martin's shooting death by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman.

Zimmerman was acquitted in his murder trial sparking protests around the country. Another trial is fast approaching that may prove to be an even bigger powder keg.

Jordan Davis

As we previously reported, 17-year old Jordan Davis was murdered by Michael Dunn at a Jacksonville gas station in November 2012, following an argument over the loud music coming from the SUV Jordan was riding in.

Dunn and his girlfriend pulled into the gas station next to the SUV carrying Jordan and three other black teens. Dunn didn't like the loud music of Chief Keef coming from the SUV, and asked that it be turned down

The teens refused Dunn's request sparking an argument. The 45-year old claimed he saw a rifle coming from the their vehicle and felt threatened. He pulled out his gun and fired eight shots into the SUV, two of which struck and killed Davis.

Dunn fled the scene, but was later arrested at his home. He was charged with murder and attempted murder.

A police search of the SUV Davis was in revealed that there was no rifle in it.

Michael Dunn

Jury selection for Dunn's trial begins in September. He is expected to use the "Stand Your Ground" law as his defense. His girlfriend will be a star witness for the prosecution. She will testify to some of the incriminating statements Dunn made as he sped away from the shooting.

Hot 97's Peter Rosenberg talks about the case on this morning's episode of "The Realness."

Amanda Berry is slowly putting her life back together. Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight were held captive for a decade by Ariel Castro in a Cleveland home.

The 27-year old finally escaped from the home in May after being held against her will since 2003.

On Saturday (July 27) Berry took one more step as she attempts to return to normalcy when she attended Cleveland's RoverFest. She took the stage to applause from the crowd and later joined Nelly during his performance.

12350275660?profile=original

"She waved to the crowd, everyone went crazy cheering, and she went backstage. Nelly did his set, 4 or 5 songs, and then he brought her out again and everyone cheered," concertgoer Kayleigh Fladung told Cleveland.com.

Castro will spend the rest of his days behind bars after being sentenced to life and 1,000 years in prison.

Check out coverage from ABC News and footage uploaded to YouTube by Eric Hanson and Cleveland radio station WMMS' DJ Rover.

A staggering $53 million worth of diamonds and other jewels were stolen Sunday from the Carlton Intercontinental Hotel in Cannes, in one of Europe's biggest jewelry heists recent years, police said.

12350279262?profile=original

The Carlton Intercontinental Hotel in Cannes, where $53 million in jewelry was stolen on Sunday.

The hotel in the sweltering French Riviera was hosting a temporary jewelry exhibit over the summer from the prestigious Leviev diamond house, which is owned by Israeli billionaire Lev Leviev.

A police spokesman said the theft took place around noon, but he could not confirm local media reports that the robber was a single gunman who stuffed a suitcase with the gems before making a swift exit. The spokesman spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter on the record.

Several police officers were placed in front of the Carlton exhibition room to prevent journalists and photographers gathered at the scene from entering.

The luxury Carlton hotel is situated on the exclusive Promenade de la Croisette that stretches a mile and a half along the French Riviera, and is thronged by the rich and famous throughout the year. The hotel's position provides not only a beautiful view of the sea, but an easy get away for potential jewel thieves along the long stretch of road.

The valuable gems were supposed to be on public display until the end of August. It was not immediately clear how many pieces were stolen.

Hotel officials would not comment, and attempts to reach Leviev or his company were not immediately successful.

Several brazen jewelry thefts have taken place this year, including one in Belgium on Feb. 18 that involved some $50 million worth of diamonds.

In that heist, the stones from the global diamond center of Antwerp had been loaded on a plane headed to Zurich when robbers dressed in dark police clothing and hoods drove through a hole they'd cut in the Brussels Airport fence in two black cars with blue police lights flashing. They drove onto the tarmac, approached the plane, brandished machine guns, offloaded the diamonds, then left in an operation that took barely five minutes.

Authorities have since detained dozens of people and recovered much of the stolen treasure in that operation.

In May, Cannes was struck by two highly publicized jewelry heists during the Cannes Film Festival.

In the first theft, robbers stole about $1 million worth of jewels after ripping a safe from the wall of a hotel room. The jewelry was taken from the Novotel room of an employee of Chopard, the Swiss-based watch and jewelry maker that has loaned bling to A-list stars walking the red carpet at the film festival.

And in the second, thieves outsmarted 80 security guards in an exclusive hotel and made off with a De Grisogono necklace that creators say is worth 2 million euros ($2.6 million.)

Jewel thieves have been getting attention in Europe in more ways than one.

On Thursday, a member of the notorious "Pink Panther" jewel thief gang escaped from a Swiss prison after accomplices rammed a gate and overpowered guards with bursts from their AK-47s, police said.

Milan Poparic fled with fellow inmate Adrian Albrecht from the Orbe prison in the western state of Vaud.

Police say the Pink Panthers network's members are prime suspects in a series of daring thefts. According to Interpol, the group has targeted luxury watch and jewelry stores in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the United States, netting more than (euro) 330 million (

285m) since 1999.

Poparic is the third member of the Pink Panthers to escape from a Swiss prison in as many months, according to Vaud police.

**UPDATE** August 6th

Lloyds of London announced today that a reward of $1 million is being offered by one of their affiliates for information leading to the $136 million worth of jewels stolen from Carlton Intercontinental Hotel in Cannes last month.

The amount stolen was initially estimated to be $53 million.

According to the Associated Press, a single gunman walked into the exhibit where the jewels were being showcased, threatened several unarmed guards, then vanished down a side street with his massive haul. The theft is one of the largest in history.

Below are several photos of items stolen from the exhibit.

SWAT officers shot and killed a suspect after he killed six people in an apartment building in Hialeah, just a few miles north of Miami, ending an hours-long standoff early Saturday, Hialeah Police said.

Hialeah police spokesman Sgt. Eddie Rodriguez told NBC News that two people were rescued alive from an apartment building where they were being held hostage.

“This is one of the worst shootings we’ve probably had ever in Hialeah," police spokesman Carl Zogby said.

Police said earlier that the suspect was confined to a particular area of the building at 1485 W. 46th St. Negotiators were talking with the suspect, and police sent a robot into the scene, police said.

12350271498?profile=original

Gunman, Pedro Vargas, 43

Police had first received 911 calls at about 6:30 p.m., and found an active shooter in the building, Zogby said.

But after police discovered that six people were dead, and that the man had two hostages in an apartment, the SWAT unit decided there was no more time to negotiate, Zogby said.

12350272253?profile=original

About eight hours after the situation began, a SWAT team found the gunman barricaded on the fourth floor of the building, where they killed him and saved the two hostages.

12350272664?profile=original

"The end result: seven people have lost their lives in this incident, six innocent victims and the one shooter," Zogby said. "Now starts the investigation, how and why this happened.”

Zogby said the hostages were not hurt, and he did not believe that any officers were injured.

Three of the victims were men and three were women. Shamira Pisciotti identified two of them as her parents and building managers, Italo and Samira Pisciotti. She said she heard the shots, ran over to her parents in the building, and found her mother dead and her father clinging to life.

12350273256?profile=original

"I guess there was an altercation and the person opened fire on both of them. My mom was dead the moment that she was shot and my dad still had a pulse when I got to him," Shamira Pisciotti said.

He died soon after, she said.

The building managers were found dead in a hallway and three others, two females and one male, were found in one of the apartments, Hialeah police spokesman Sgt. Eddie Rodriguez told  NBC News.

Agustin Hernandez and Alberto Martinez confirmed three of the victims were their sister-in-law Palis Merlis Niebles, her husband Patricio and her teenage daughter Priscilla Perez. Hernandez and Martinez, who are married to Niebles' sisters, said Patricio was a handyman at the apartment complex and worked with the building managers.

12350272865?profile=original

Another man was found dead in the lobby of a building across the street.

Shamira Pisciotti said she believed that there was a complaint about the shooter and that he confronted her parents about it, and that he then shot them.

She said she heard about 15 to 20 gunshots. Several other witnesses said they heard between 10 and 12 shots.

Dozens of people were evacuated from their homes, and a couple of streets in the area were shut down.

Claribel Dominguez said she believes she was one of the last people to see her friend Samina Pisciotti alive. She shared that news with Pisciotti's grieving family.

“But I was just with her mom before it happened, like 15 or 20 minutes ago before it happened we were at Kmart,” Dominguez said.

She said that she heard several shots from inside the store, a few blocks away from the scene.

She got a call from Shamira Pisciotti, who told her that her parents had been shot and killed.

"And I still don't believe it," Dominguez said.

Police were investigating the motive behind the killings and were still identifying those who were killed, according to NBC News.
