BOSTON (AP) — Bill Russell, the NBA great who anchored a Boston Celtics dynasty that won 11 championships in 13 years — the last two as the first Black head coach in any major U.S. sport & marched for civil rights with Martin Luther King Jr., died Sunday. He was 88.

His family posted the news on social media, saying Russell died with his wife, Jeannine, by his side. The statement did not give the cause of death.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement that Russell was “the greatest champion in all of team sports.”

“Bill stood for something much bigger than sports: the values of equality, respect and inclusion that he stamped into the DNA of our league. At the height of his athletic career, Bill advocated vigorously for civil rights & social justice, a legacy he passed down to generations of NBA players who followed in his footsteps,” Silver said. “Through the taunts, threats & unthinkable adversity, Bill rose above it all & remained true to his belief that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity.

A Hall of Famer, 5-time Most Valuable Player & 12-time All-Star, Russell in 1980 was voted the greatest player in the NBA history by basketball writers. 

The native of Louisiana also left a lasting mark as a Black athlete in a city & country where race is often a flash point. He was at the March on Washington in 1963, when Martin Luther King Jr. gave his “I Have a Dream” speech & he backed Muhammad Ali when the boxer was pilloried for refusing induction into the military draft.

In 2011, President Barack Obama awarded Russell the Medal of Freedom.

President Biden tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, days after he logged a negative test after taking Paxlovid to treat the virus, he said on Twitter.

Biden, 79, posted on Twitter that so-called “rebound” cases like his happen “with a small minority of folks.”

“I’ve got no symptoms but I am going to isolate for the safety of everyone around me,” the tweet said. “I’m still at work, and will be back on the road soon.”

Biden first tested positive for COVID on July 21, and subsequently tested negative Tuesday night after being administered the drug Paxlovid.

White House Physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor said in a letter on Saturday that Biden was among “a small percentage” of Paxlovid recipients who saw their symptoms “rebound.”

Biden tested positive on an antigen test and will isolate in case he is contagious, O’Connor.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A suspect was arrested and charged in the death of a Houston pastor in a possible road rage incident, records show.

On Friday, 23-year-old Deshawn Longmire of Pearland was charged with murder in the death of Reverend Dr. Ronald K. Mouton.

Longmire was pulled over on June 29 after running a stop sign, police said.

Mouton was a senior pastor at the East Bethel Missionary Baptist Church for more than 30 years, according to family members.

On June 24, Mouton was shot and killed at 6400 Gulf Freeway on the feeder road at Gould Street, just minutes from the church.

According to court records, Longmire told investigators he was an Uber driver and said he was not in the area at the time of the shooting.

After searching Longmire's phone, authorities said Uber records showed he was in the area at the time Mouton was shot to death.

A witness told detectives that a man, Mouton, in a white vehicle and a suspect, Longmire, in a black car were arguing when they "started moving, then stopped again," according to court records.

Records show a witness said the driver of the black car, Longmire, stretched his arm out the window with a pistol and shot at Mouton.

Investigators believe Mouton was involved in a road rage dispute with Longmire.

Mouton leaves behind a wife, four children, and 10 grandchildren. His family set up a memorial at the crash site.

SALISBURY, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina woman, identified as Christie Jones, 49, apparently seeking revenge on her ex-boyfriend tried to set fire to a house owned by someone else, according to a sheriff’s office.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office said in a report that a homeowner in Gold Hill was awakened Friday by a neighbor who saw a woman trying to set fire to the house. There were bundles of wood and a fire on the front porch and deputies found a jug of oil that they say was used to start the fire.

As the homeowner went to get a garden hose, he saw burning pieces of wood around a propane tank. The garden hose didn’t work because the Jones had apparently used a sealant to block the flow of water, deputies said.

The homeowner grabbed a rifle and confronted Jones, who was holding one of his dogs on a leash. With law enforcement and emergency personnel approaching, Jones drove off, the sheriff’s office reported.

Deputies arrested Jones and charged her with felony first-degree arson, assault with a deadly weapon, and larceny of an animal. Bond was set at $101,500. It couldn’t be determined Tuesday if she had an attorney.

Investigators estimate the home sustained approximately $20,000 in damage.

MADRID (AP) — Prosecutors in Spain said Friday they would ask a court to sentence Colombian pop star Shakira to eight years and two months in prison, if she is convicted in her expected trial for alleged tax fraud.

Shakira, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, is charged with failing to pay the Spanish government 14.5 million euros ($15 million) in taxes between 2012 and 2014. The prosecutors said they would also seek a fine of 24 million euros ($24 million).

The indictment details six charges against Shakira. The singer this week rejected a settlement deal offered by prosecutors, opting to go to trial instead. A trial date has yet to be set.

Her publicists in London said in a statement Friday that Shakira “has always cooperated and abided by the law, demonstrating impeccable conduct as an individual and a taxpayer.” The publicists accused the Spanish Tax Agency of violating her rights.

Shakira’s Spanish public relations team said earlier this week that the artist has deposited the amount she is said to owe, including 3 million euros in interest.

Prosecutors in Barcelona have alleged the Grammy winner spent more than half of each year between 2012 and 2014 in Spain and should have paid taxes in the country.

Shakira recently ended an 11-year-long relationship with FC Barcelona star Gerard Piqué, with whom she has two children. The family used to live in Barcelona.
