Beulah Jackson, the grandmother who helped raise 50 after his mother Sabrina passed away when he was only 8 years old, passed away last week. While it may be tough to fully comprehend the full magnitude of this loss for Fif, it is clear how much of an impact she’s had on him all his life. Whether it be through rhyme, in interviews, or even tweets, 50 has always been very vocal about “Nana” and her influential role in his life.
During a sit-down with REVOLT earlier this year, Fif couldn’t help but name-drop Nana while discussing the many roads he’s traversed during his decade-passing career. He revealed that back when he was recording material for what would eventually be 2005’s The Massacre, the Queens-native created the album closer “God Gave Me Style” specifically for Nana.
“The first song that I wrote for The Massacre was ‘God Gave Me Style,” said Fif to REVOLT. “Because if you asked me to make one wish, it would be for that record to be a success. And you know what happens? When I make the song, I go to my grandma house and I play the record for her. And she’s like, ‘Wow you got one for me,’” he remembered.
“Look, she’s bought every record that I ever had sell commercial and [they] still got the plastic on ’em. She don’t listen to 50 Cent, that ain’t her vibe. [So] when she hears the content to ‘God Give My Style,’ she says oh you made one for me, I’m like, Yeah I’ma do it a little different this time and she’s like, ‘Okay, just don’t forget why they liked you in the first place.’”
Soon after she said that, Fif explained that’s when the more aggressive records like “Sky Mask Way” and "This Is 50" came about.
“When she said that to me, it landed differently,” he recalled about the moment. “She’s the only person in my life period, that I could give everything I have. She would never anything without thinking of me first.”
Those moving words are similar to what 50 told Oprah back in 2012 for a special sit-down, where he described their bond in detail. “I love my grandmother and my grandfather,” he said. “It’s a different [love] with my grandmother. We’ve always had a connection. I used to sit there and rub on her feet, even paint on her toenails and stuff like that… For her I’ll do that, because her feet swell up.”
Since the news broke last week, 50 made his first statement on his grandmother’s passing earlier today (September 23), taking to Instagram to send out the following heartfelt message:
My angel (Beulah Jackson) God has blessed me with letting her see me win. She was proud of me, now how i see my self is all that matters.
Our condolences go out to 50 and his family.
