A North Carolina man desperate for health insurance robbed a bank of $1 so he could get locked up for medical reasons.
59-year old James Verone is down on his luck. He has a growth of some kind on his chest, an injured foot, two ruptured discs, carpal tunnel syndrome and arthritis. Without a job or health insurance the only idea he could come up with was to rob RBC Bank in Gaston, NC hoping to get a three year sentence so his ailments could get treated.
Verone entered the bank unarmed on Thursday (June 9) and handed a teller a note with his demand.
"The note said 'this is a bank robbery, please only give me one dollar,'" Verone explained while sitting in Gaston County jail charged with felony larceny. "This is the first time I've ever been in trouble with the law. I'm sort of a logical person and that was my logic. (That was) what I came up with."
Before leaving his house by cab to commit the robbery, Verone sent a letter to the Gaston Gazette listing the county jail as the return address.
“When you receive this a bank robbery will have been committed by me. This robbery is being committed by me for one dollar,” he wrote. “I am of sound mind but not so much sound body."
Verone is currently in jail on $2000 bond.

Last night Lupe Fiasco went on the O'Reilly Factor to talk about his recent comments that President Obama is a terrorist.
The 29-year old rapper didn't back down from his previous statements, but did try to clarify them.
"To put it into context I was asked about a song I did called 'Words I Never Said' which addresses terrorism," Lupe said. "So the statement that I made which was the biggest terrorist -- Obama and the United States of America and it's foreign policy. It's really just an expression of me trying to understand critically the society."
Host Bill O'Reilly defended Obama, which is something new for Fox News.
"President Obama is not a terrorist," O'Reilly said. "He's trying to do what he believes is the right thing to do. The United States is not a bad nation, it's a noble nation. We're trying to defend ourselves against people who killed us on 9/11. And you go out there and talk to a lot of younger people, and this is what gets me. Your constituency are not exactly political science Ph.D's, they're impressionable young kids."

Sean said he's been tricked by one hit female wonders like Boss in the past and doesn't plan on letting it happen again.
"I've been fooled -- you know how they will have a nice single. I was one of those dudes [that] if the single was good I'd buy the album. I got fooled a few times," Sean said.

Entertainers are finding out that you really have to watch what you say in a public forum these days.
Just a couple of weeks after comedian Tracy Morgan found himself in hot water because of a homophobic rant during a stand-up comedy performance, singer Cee Lo Green is facing a similar situation for something he tweeted on Friday (June 17).
According to US Magazine Cee Lo got into a disagreement on twitter with music editor Andrea Swensson, who was being critical of his recent performance during a concert in Minneapolis with Rihanna.
"I respect your criticism, but be fair! People enjoyed last night!" he wrote. "I'm guessing you're gay? And my masculinity offended you? Well f*ck you!"
Today the Goodie Mob member and judge on NBC's The Voice issued a statement via US Magazine.
She was very critical of me. At the time I didn't even know what gender the person was. I was being a little outspoken that night, a little outrageous. I always expect people to assume that everything I do is part of my character and sense of humor. I assumed that whoever it was would assume it was all in good fun. It wasn't taken so well, apparently.
I most certainly am not harboring any sort of negative feeling toward the gay community. I don't have an opinion on people with different religious, sexual or political preferences. I'm one of the most liberal artists that I think you will ever meet, and I pride myself on that. Two of the remaining members that I have on my team on The Voice are proud and outspokenly gay. We just did a team performance of 'Everyday People,' and I picked that song for us to do specifically to highlight how we can get along even though we’re so different.
If I could take it all back, I would. I was not being serious. I just wanted to defend our performance. It was only our third show with a whole new crew and we were all really proud about the progress that we had made.
