Video After The Jump

(WSB-TV) A deadly disease is rampant in Metro Atlanta, and scientists are calling it an epidemic.

Channel 2's Dave Huddleston spoke with researchers and doctors who said Atlanta is the epicenter of that epidemic, comparing some neighborhoods to developing African countries.

J.R. Watson is a towering man, and the only hair on his head is a handle-bar mustache.

Just by looking at him, you'd never know he has AIDS. He recalled the moment he found out he was positive 20 years ago.

He contracted HIV from a woman he was dating. He told Huddleston his story hoping to keep young people from making a potentially lethal mistake.

12352121699?profile=original

"All it took was that one time with that wrong person to change your life forever," Watson said. "It doesn't matter who you are, just because you live in a nice neighborhood, just because you're alive outside of Atlanta."

"I sat there and literally cried like a baby for 30 to 45 minutes," Watson told Huddleston.

IMPACT IN ATLANTA

But if you live in the capitol city, AIDS research officials said the number of people effected is staggering.

12352122066?profile=original

"Downtown Atlanta is as bad as Zimbabwe or Harare or Durban," said Dr. Carlos del Rio, co-director of Emory University's Center for AIDS Research.

Del Rio said the disease shifted from one that mainly affected gay men and drug users in the late '80s to a disease that now affects just about every population, but in particular African-Americans with limited access to health care.

"Don't have food on your table, have kids to take care of and somebody says you have HIV, that's just another, that's just another problem that you have," del Rio said.

GRANT MONEY IN FULTON COUNTY

Another problem was a lack of leadership and mismanagement in Fulton County.

A 2015 Fulton County internal audit of their HIV Prevention Program cited poor management after the county squandered millions of CDC grant dollars meant for HIV programs.

Ultimately the county had to return millions to the CDC.

"Well it certainly was a bruised eye," said Fulton County Chairman John Eaves.

The County Commission asked for audits of the embattled Health Department and demanded changes in procedures.

"I did meet with city officials directly and assured them that processes were in place and make sure going forward monies would be better accounted for," Eaves said.

CDC STUDY

A recent study released by the CDC shows why that funding is so critical.

If you live in the southeast, you're more likely to be diagnosed with HIV than any other part of the country and in Georgia the risk of diagnosis leaps to one in 51.

"We should not be having an epidemic of that proportion in a country like ours," del Rio said. "This is not Africa, we have resources."

Fulton County now has a new public health director and HIV programs like mobile testing units are more visible around the city. The van travels to ZIP codes with the highest number of HIV cases.

Channel 2 was there when the testing unit was by Grady Hospital. They tested more than 30 people, and two came back HIV positive.

But fortunately for Watson, HIV is no longer an automatic death sentence -- if you receive treatment.

With access to antivirals he is looking forward to living a long life. His diagnosis didn't get in the way of him finding love and he is now married.

"I fall in love with her every day and that's no lie," Watson said. "That's no exaggeration."

Video After The Jump

Arsenio Hall is firing back at Sinead O'Connor for accusing him of being Prince's drug dealer.

The comedian/actor filed a $5 million defamation lawsuit against the Irish singer on Thursday, May 5. He says O'Connor is a "desperate attention-seeker" who is "well known for her media antics and for seeking attention through inflammatory Facebook posts."

12352125863?profile=original

As we previously reported, O'Connor posted a long rant on her Facebook page Monday, May 2, claiming Hall supplied Prince with drugs for over two decades. She wrote that she had already given the information to authorities in Minnesota who are investigating the music icon's death.

She also accused Hall of drugging her years ago via a marijuana "spliff" at Eddie Murphy's home.

"Two words for the DEA investigating where prince got his drugs over the decades.... Arsenio Hall (AKA Prince's and Eddie Murphy's b!tch)," O'Conner wrote. "Anyone imagining prince was not a long time hard drug user is living in cloud cuckoo land. Arsenio I've reported you to the Carver County Sherrif's office. Expect their call. They are aware you spiked me years ago at Eddie murphy's house. You best get tidying your man cave."

12352126282?profile=original

O'Connor found worldwide fame in 1990 when she released a remake of the Prince song "Nothing Compares 2 U."

The brother of a disabled man contacted TMZ to let the world know that 50 Cent has a huge heart.

Chris Brown told the website that he found out several weeks ago that the music icon was staying at the same Philadelphia hotel where his brother, Justin, also had a room.

Justin suffers from reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome, a condition that has left him bedridden.

Chris tracked down 50 and told him that Justin was a superfan and wanted to meet him. The "In Da Club" hit maker said he had a very busy schedule and was unsure he could do it, but would "try."

Lo and behold 50 did make the time. He showed up without an entourage, met with Justin, spending 90 minutes talking with him.

12352130898?profile=original

This was two weeks prior to the Andrew Ferrell incident, which Chris says is the exact opposite of his brother's life-changing experience.

As we previously reported, 50 apologized to Andrew, a worker at a Cincinnati airport who suffers from autism, for a video he posted on Instagram. In addition, the G-Unit Records boss made a $100,000 donation to Autism Speaks.

In the mid 1980's Azie "A.Z." Faison, Rich Porter and Alpo Martinez were at the top of the cocaine trade in Harlem. But like most stories about drug dealers this one doesn't have a happy ending.

Azie was shot nine times during a 1987 home invasion robbery, which made him decide to retire from the game.

12352123877?profile=original

On January 3, 1990, Rich was murdered by Alpo. After getting arrested in 1991, Alpo turned government witness. He is under federal witness protection following his 2015 release from prison

Azie's life story was told in the 2002 movie "Paid in Full."

12352124072?profile=original

Azie recently sat down with VladTV to talk about his early life, including dropping out of school in the 9th grade, stashing guns, money and drugs for Rich Porter at the cleaners where he worked at and meeting the Dominican plug who got him started in the cocaine business.

A high ranking member of Brooklyn, New York's G Stone Crips has been found dead three weeks after he was reported missing.

28-year old Peter Martinez's body washed ashore Monday, May 1, on Manhattan Beach. His hands were tied behind his back, face covered in duct tape and his feet were encased in 100 pounds of cement.

"They botched the cement shoe job because air got in and he floated to the surface," a law enforcement official said, according to DNAInfo.

12352130280?profile=original

Peter Martinez was found dead on Monday, May 1

Martinez had a criminal record that included arrests for reckless endangerment, weapons possession and filling a false instrument. Earlier this year he was shot in the leg.

At the time of his death he reportedly owed someone money.

12352131658?profile=original

The G Stone or GS9 crew received nationwide news coverage in December 2014, when 13 members, including rappers Rowdy Rebel and Bobby Shmurda, were arrested and charged with conspiracy, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a weapon, criminally using drug paraphernalia, attempted assault, assault, attempted murder, murder and criminal use of a firearm.

12352131465?profile=original

Both Bobby and Rowdy remain incarcerated.

Bobby has filed a lawsuit against the city of New York for false arrest his lawyer, Alex Spiro, told Billboard this week.
