Brittney Griner, the WNBA star who was held for months in Russian prisons on drug charges, was released Thursday in a one-for-one prisoner swap for international arms dealer Viktor Bout, according to a U.S. official. The one-for-one exchange agreement negotiated with Moscow in recent weeks was given final approval by President Biden within just the last week, according to sources familiar with the deal. The swap, first reported by CBS News, took place on Thursday in the United Arab Emirates.
Five former U.S. officials told CBS News the agreement had been reached as of last Thursday.
A White House official said President Biden was in the Oval Office Thursday morning on the phone, speaking with Griner and her wife, and that Vice President Kamala Harris was also in the room. Per standard procedure for freed U.S. prisoners, Griner was expected to quickly undergo a medical evaluation.
To secure Griner's release, the president ordered Bout to be freed and returned to Russia. Mr. Biden signed the commutation order cutting short Bout's 25-year federal prison sentence.
Notably, the Griner-for-Bout exchange leaves retired U.S. Marine Paul Whelan imprisoned in Russia. Whelan has been in Russian custody for nearly four years. He was convicted on espionage charges that the U.S. has called false.
Griner was detained at a Russian airport in February and later pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the discovery of cannabis-derived oil cartridges in her luggage.

The Trump Organization was convicted Tuesday over what prosecutors say was a 15-year scheme to defraud state & federal tax authorities.
Former President Trump's company could face up to $1.6 million in fines & the guilty verdict could hinder his ability to conduct business in New York City.
The big picture: Trump Organization & its Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg were charged in 2021 with tax-related offenses, including paying executives with "off the books" compensation, such as apartments & luxury cars.
*The indictment said that the Trump Organization operated the yearslong scheme to allow some employees to "understate their compensation" so that their taxes "were significantly less than the amounts that should have been paid."
*Weisselberg pleaded guilty in August to all 15 counts in the indictment from the Manhattan district attorney's office. He was also required to testify as part of the plea deal.
Trump has criticized the charges as politically motivated.
The former president & his family were not charged in the case.
"We can have no tolerance for individuals or organizations that violate our laws to line their pockets," New York Attorney General Letitia James said. "I commend Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg & his team for their successful prosecution of the Trump Organization & I was proud to assist in this important case," James said.
Trump also faces an investigation by the Department of Justice over efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results & his handling of classified documents.

Rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, has continued his antisemitic tirade by telling Jewish people to forgive Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.
Ye, who has been condemned over his repeated antisemitic remarks, doubled down on his praise of Hitler during an interview with Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes on Saturday.
McInnes, a far-right political commentator, suggested West had been "canceled" & mentioned comments he made during an earlier interview with conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.
During the interview, McInnes said: "You love Jews, but you're canceled for antisemitism because you also love Hitler, but you love everyone equally. Good guys & bad guys."
West replied: "Yeah, Jewish people can't tell me who I can love & who I can't love. You can't say, you can't force your pain on everyone else. Jewish people, forgive Hitler today."
Hitler's Nazi regime oversaw the Holocaust during which more than 6 million Jewish people were murdered in concentration camps across Europe.
The rapper, who was flanked by white supremacist Nick Fuentes, repeated numerous antisemitic tropes during the interview, including the belief that Jewish people control institutions such as the media & banks, a cornerstone of multiple bogus conspiracy theories.
McInnes stated West's comments were controversial & added: "Hitler's got a pretty bad reputation."
West responded: "Well, who made that reputation? That was made by Jewish people."

A man who apparently died by suicide at a parking structure at Disneyland Saturday night was identified as a 51-year-old principal of a Huntington Beach elementary school who was facing child endangerment accusations.
Christopher Christensen was a principal at Newland Elementary School. He also was a musician who taught and played throughout Southern California.
The apparent suicide was reported around 9 p.m. Saturday, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department, which received a call about a person who fell or jumped from a parking garage at the Anaheim theme park. Police said Christensen's death appears to be a suicide.
Grief counselors were expected to be at the school Monday.
Christensen was arrested Nov. 15 on suspicion of misdemeanor child endangerment and battery. He was released the next day. Jail records did not show a court date, but the Press-Enterprise reported that he was due to appear Monday.
A lengthy Facebook post Saturday night on Christensen's Facebook page mentioned charges stemming from a family dispute. The post included denials of the allegations against him.
