Fox News -- A Mexican police officer involved in the botched operation to arrest one of drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s sons last month was killed by a hail of more than 150 bullets in a brazen daylight assassination, in the latest incident of extreme cartel violence to blight the country.
The 30-year-old officer, only named by police as Eduardo N., was killed in Culiacan, Sinaloa on Wednesday – just three weeks after militarized police captured and then released Ovidio Guzman Lopez after a brutal shootout with cartel gunmen.
Mexican newspaper Excelsior shared CCTV footage from Wednesday’s attack that showed the police officer parking his white vehicle outside a shopping center. Moments later, a red vehicle pulls up alongside him and armed gunmen men leap out, firing rapidly from close range.
Within 30 seconds, the gunmen fired 155 shots at the police officer, before leaping into the vehicle and running off, the outlet reported.
Officials said the officer was a member of Sinaloa’s State Preventive Police who had been assigned to protect Undersecretary of Public Safety Carlos Alberto Hernandez Leyva.
Cristobal Castañeda Camarillo, the Secretary of Public Safety in Sinaloa, said that Eduardo N., was not directly involved in the botched arrest attempt of Guzman Lopez on Oct. 17, but that he was part of the wider antidrug security unit patrolling the region, according to El Heraldo de Mexico.
Guzman Lopez, who is wanted by U.S. authorities on drug trafficking allegations, was briefly captured by police in a house in Culiacan.
But cartel gunmen ambushed the police convoy and burned road barricades in the area while Lopez was in custody. He was released and police retreated following the intense fighting. At least eight people were killed and more than 20 wounded.
Dramatic helmet cam footage released by authorities showed police moving into a building where a young woman first emerges, followed by Guzman Lopez, who is wearing a baseball hat.
The latest targeted attack came on the same day Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador again defended the officers’ retreat and subsequent release of Guzman Lopez, reiterating his belief that cartel violence cannot be fought with more violence.
“The bad cannot be confronted with the bad. The bad needs to be confronted doing the good,” he added. “We believe that the most important (thing) is life, protecting the lives of everyone; the lives of the military, the lives of the presumed delinquents, and the lives of civilians.”
He added: “If we had acted as they asked, implored us, there would have been more than 200 dead.”
Obrador's so-called "hugs, not bullets" when dealing with the cartels has come under increasing scrutiny this week following the deaths of nine Americans - three adult women and six children - who were gunned down in Sonora state.
Since Obrador took office in December, Mexico has been on track to record more than 32,000 murders this year. In the last month alone, the country has been plagued by at least three deadly high-profile attacks - including Monday's - at the hands of cartel members.

LUMBERTON, N.C. (WSOC-TV) -- A 13-year-old accused of killing two people and escaping from custody on Tuesday is back behind bars.
The teen's uncle, Wayne Lambert told our sister station, WTVD, the teen showed up at his house still wearing a leg shackle and a pair of socks.
The juvenile, identified as Jericho W., had been on the run since Tuesday morning.
Lambert said Jericho spent hours hiding in the woods before he finally arrived at his home. The boy's uncle took him in, fed him and let him take a shower before calling authorities.
"When I see him, I say, 'Baby, you know what we got to do?' Lambert told WTVD. "He said, ‘Daddy, I don't want to go back.' I said, ‘No you don't, baby, and daddy don't want to carry you back. But you are going to have to go.' I said, ‘Do you understand me?' He said, 'Yes sir.'"
Officials said Nikki Jacobs, the mother of Jericho W., turned him over to U.S. Marshals Service where he was transferred back to a juvenile detention center.
On Wednesday, the U.S. Marshals Service announced a $1,500 cash reward for information that led to the boy's capture. He was at a courthouse on Tuesday when he disappeared.
The Department of Public Safety said Jericho was considered a threat to the public because of a "prior history of assaultive and unpredictable behavior."
Jericho, who is from Lumberton, was one of two people arrested Oct. 17 for a double homicide which happened two days earlier. He and Derrick Deshawn Hunt, 19, also of Lumberton were arrested and charged in the deaths of brothers Frank and Adam Thomas.
After the arrest, Wilkins said the killings had a "drug component to it."

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- The Florida State University student who was robbed outside of Gilchrist Hall Monday morning was stabbed in the back of the head during the incident, according to an arrest affidavit.
The FSU Police Department said Monday evening it arrested Rodney Jermaine Joyner, 36, in connection to the robbery.
According to the affidavit, FSU's surveillance footage showed Joyner parked in his car at the intersection of University Way and Gray Street around 6:18 a.m. Monday. At around 6:36 a.m., Joyner tackled the victim from behind and put the knife to his chest.
The victim told police he gave in because he saw the knife, so he let Joyner take his phone from his pocket and gave him the password. The victim said Joyner freaked out a little bit after he told him he needed help and saw the blood coming from the back of his head, the affidavit said.
Joyner put a shirt over the victim's face, and the victim then put it on the wound on the back of their head.
According to the affidavit, the victim told Joyner his mother died three weeks ago so he could take whatever he wanted, and Joyner said that made him feel bad. Joyner told police he believed a Haitian girl he had been seeing placed a voodoo curse on him, causing him to act strange and possibly hurt the victim.
Joyner was charged with robbery with a weapon, aggravated battery using a deadly weapon and attempted kidnapping. Police say Joyner is not affiliated with FSU.

It's been a tumultuous last 12 months for Antonio Brown.
The star wide receiver was traded by the Pittsburgh Steelers to the Oakland Raiders in March 2019. He displayed erratic behavior with them. Brown got into an argument with general manager Mike Mayock, threatened to retire if he wasn't allowed to wear his old helmet and missed multiple practices.
The Raiders fined him and voided the guaranteed money in his contracted. On September 7th the team granted his request to be released.
Later that day Brown agreed to a one-year contract with the New England Patriots, but was released after one game following allegations of sexual misconduct and alleged intimidating text messages to one of his accusers.
Unable to find a new team, Brown's frustrations boiled over on November 7th, when he went on a Twitter tirade aimed at the league.
"Imagine conforming to a system giving it a 100 percent to see them treat me like this is unfairly! Making money off my sweat and blood Fuck the @nfl," he wrote. "I’ll never play in that shit treat black people the worse! Clear my name and go fuck your self."
That's probably all she wrote for Brown's career.
