Track star Cameron Burrell -- former NCAA champion and godson of the legendary Carl Lewis -- passed away at the age of 26 years old, his family announced Tuesday.
Burrell was a star at the University of Houston ... capturing the 100m championship in 2018. CB also anchored Houston's 4x100m relay team. Bottom line, he was the fastest college athlete in the U.S.
CB was also 3x NCAA All-American in multiple events ... and held an NCAA record in the 4x100m relay.
Cameron's dad, Leroy Burrell, announced the devastating news through the U of Houston, saying ... "My family is extremely saddened with the loss of our son, Cameron, last night."
"We are going through profound sorrow and ask that all of our friends, extended University of Houston family and the track and field community in the U.S. and abroad allow us to gather with our closest family and friends."
"We are profoundly grief-stricken, and thank everyone for the outpouring of prayers and support. We will forward more information when it is available.”
Cameron was following in his dad Leroy's footsteps ... who was a former world record holder in the 100m and gold medalist at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in the 4x100m relay.

The circumstances surrounding Cameron's death are currently unclear ... but medical records show the place of death as a "parking garage."

The grass isn’t always greener on the other side.
Free agent point guard Dennis Schroder is seemingly having a tough time with the fallout from his decision to decline the $84 million extension the Lakers offered him in March.
“I think he’s in a state of shock because of what he’s done,” a source told the Boston Herald’s Mark Murphy about how Schroder feels months after his choice.
The 27-year-old was dealt to Los Angeles from Oklahoma City last offseason. He excelled in his starting role with the Lakers and worked well alongside veterans LeBron James and Anthony Davis. However, Schroder thought he could work out a bigger deal.
When the free agency window opened on Aug. 2, teams didn’t gravitate toward Schroder as expected — and the Lakers wasted no time trading for point guard Russell Westbrook from the Wizards, along with a slew of veteran stars, closing the door on a possible Schroder return.
Though the market for starting point guards is slim, the 6-foot-3 point Schroder found a temporary home in Boston, signing a one-year deal with the Celtics for the $5.9 million exception, according to ESPN, following Kemba Walker’s departure to the Knicks.
“The Celtics have pitched Schroder the idea of backing up Marcus Smart next season,” but, “he needs time,” following the “shock” of his Lakers fallout, according to the Boston Herald.

Eminem's ex-wife, Kim Scott, was hospitalized following a suicide attempt during which she became combative with law enforcement ... TMZ has learned.
Law enforcement sources tell us ... police and emergency workers responded to a call of a suicidal person at Kim's home in Michigan on July 30.
We're told when they arrived, Kim was so combative she had to be restrained by deputies ... and was so violent, paramedics were unable to check her vitals.
Our sources say it appeared Kim had cut herself, as she had several small lacerations on the back of her leg and a good amount of blood was on the floor.
Kim was rushed to a hospital for both medical and psychological evaluation, but is now back at home and is recovering. It's unclear if she's getting additional care.
The rapper and his ex were married in 1999 and divorced in 2001, and briefly remarried for a few months in 2006. They also have a daughter together, Hailie Jade.

INDIANAPOLIS (Fox59) – Marcus Garvin was free on bail and wearing a GPS ankle bracelet when prosecutors allege that he stabbed his girlfriend to death on July 24. Garvin was free because of a non-profit called The Bail Project, a national non-profit organization that pays the bails for suspected criminals.
While The Bail Project is backed by some high profile donors including Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, according to the Central Indiana Community Foundation the City of Indianapolis gave the non-profit a total of $150,000 in 2019 through the city’s crime-prevention grant programs. The group has paid the bails for 878 Marion County defendants since November 2018 according to WRTV.
“I don’t think taxpayers are going to be real hip to their money going to something like that,” Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police President Rick Snyder told WRTV on Friday.
Garvin’s initial bond was set at $30,000, but Judge Shatrese Flowers lowered it to $1,500 with GPS monitoring. The state objected to lowering the bond, and we are still working on discovering why they objected.
Garvin’s public defender reached out to the Bail Project to pay for Garvin’s release. The program released this statement to FOX59:
“We received a referral for bail assistance from Mr. Garvin’s public defender in January after the court lowered his bail from $30k to $1.500 and imposed GPS monitoring as a condition of release. As we do with all referrals, we interviewed Mr Garvin to gather information about his legal history, his ability to return to court, and to identify any unmet needs. He had a stable place to live with family and a plan to return to court to resolve his case.
Generally speaking, we take several factors into consideration, including the types of needs the person might have and whether we can connect them to adequate services. In this case, the bail reduction was a key factor in the decision as it indicated that the court wanted to facilitate his release.” David Gaspar, National Director of Operations at The Bail Project.
The Bail Project has received at least $150,000 over the last two years from taxpayers through the Violent Crime Prevention Grants Program. The money is allocated annually by the Indianapolis City-County Council and managed by the Central Indiana Community Foundation.
We reached out to the Marion County courts and Garvin’s public defender. The Marion County Public Defender’s Office said they have no comment. The presiding judge said they would not comment on a pending case or another judge’s decision.
Seven months later, Garvin allegedly murdered his longtime girlfriend, Christie. Court records detail a gruesome murder.
After being stabbed to death at the Always Inn on East 21st Street last month, Holt was left to decompose for nearly a week. Records said they were called to the hotel on July 30 before 5:00 a.m. on a report of a suspicious person pulling a sheet “with something heavy” into a wooded area.
They found Christie’s body wrapped in the sheet. The motel manager told police Christie and Marcus had been living in the hotel since December 2020.
Surveillance video showed a man dragging the heavy sheet, and at one point a human arm fell out and the man quickly placed it back into the sheet, documents say.
Court records show when officers arrived, they found Garvin had cut off his GPS monitor and appeared ready to flee. They also state Garvin later went into detail about what and why the incident occurred.
Christie’s loved ones said they feared Garvin would fatally hurt her after years of abuse by him.
“When I say abuse it wasn’t just like he punched her one time,” Felicia Myers said. “He beat her until he felt that he was done.”
The Marion Superior Court Probation Department, charged with monitoring those on pre-trial release, said people on pre-trial GPS monitoring have ‘unrestricted movements’ aside from any places ordered by the court to stay away from or those in a protective order.
The department said Garvin was placed on GPS monitoring on January 22 and was to have no contact near the noted individuals’ in the protective order and to maintain the operation of the device at all times. We are still working to learn whether Holt was a person he was ordered to stay away from.
“If they would have left him in there, he wouldn’t have killed her, he wouldn’t have had a chance because he’d be locked up,” Lisa Fox, Christie’s biological mom, said. “So, I blame a lot on the system right now. They let Christie down.”
Holt’s family say changes are needed for pre-trial monitoring.
“It makes you wonder, when is there going to be change,” Patty Myers, Christie’s aunt, said. “When is there going to be a time that they start realizing something has to be done? Because what’s going to happen is women are going to keep being afraid to talk. They’re going to be afraid to come forward.”

PBC have confirmed that Errol Spence Jr has pulled out of his August 21st PPV main event against Manny Pacquiao with a torn retina. In his place steps WBA titleholder Yordenis Ugas, who was slated to defend his title against Fabian Maidana in the co-main event.
“I’m very disappointed that I won’t be able to fight Manny Pacquiao on August 21,’’ Spence said. “I was excited about the fight and the event. The new matchup actually has something of a storyline behind it. “Pac-Man” (62-7-2, 39 KO) edged out Keith Thurman for the aforementioned title in 2019, while Ugas (26-4, 12 KO), whose only loss in the last seven years was a hugely controversial decision against Shawn Porter, claimed the “world” belt by beating Abel Ramos last September.
After nearly two years without a defense, the WBA elected to name Pacquiao “champion in recess” and elevate Ugas. Now, Pacquiao gets a chance to reclaim the belt he never lost in the ring.
As far as the matchup itself, it’s still a really good fight. Ugas remains one of the best welterweights in the game and figures to pose a stiff, if slightly more manageable, test for the Filipino legend. He’s been overdue for a big-name fight since the Porter debacle, so as much as it sucks to see the immensely entertaining Spence return to the shelf, at least there’s a silver lining.

Tyson Fury says his newborn daughter is sadly back in intensive care Tuesday ... and the boxing champ is now asking once again for prayers for his baby girl.
Little Athena Fury was born on Sunday and needed to be placed in the ICU on a ventilator a short time later.
Tyson and his wife, Paris, had said she was doing well, though ... and on Monday afternoon, they added the baby was off the ventilator and making "fantastic" progress.
But, Tyson shared Tuesday that things have taken another scary turn ... writing on his social media page, "Baby Athena is back [in] ICU please keep her in your prayers."
No further details have been given on the newborn's condition.
The baby is Tyson and Paris' sixth child, and their third daughter. The couple -- who got married in 2008 -- announced they were pregnant with her back in February.
While Athena fights to recover, Tyson has begun raising money for the Alder Hey Children's Charity ... a UK org. that helps facilities treat children.
So far, Tyson's GoFundMe has raised more than $38,000.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced he is "stepping aside" from his office.
Cuomo called the impeachment investigation into him "politically motivated" — but added that he was stepping down because he would "never want to be unhelpful in any way."
"I'm a New Yorker, born and bred. I'm a fighter and my instinct is to fight through this controversy because I truly believe it is politically motivated, I believe it is unfair and it is untruthful and I believe it demonizes behavior that is unsustainable for society," he said.
Cuomo continued: "New York tough means New York loving, and I love New York, and I love you. I would never want to be unhelpful in any way."
A New York state investigation released last week found Cuomo "sexually harassed multiple women and violated state law." Cuomo has repeatedly denied the allegations, but today said he has "been too familiar with people" and apologized to the women he said he "truly offended."
After the state report was released, President Biden, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and more than two thirds of New York state senators called on Cuomo to resign.
