Documentary:Dogfighting,Sport Or Animal Cruelty? from ChasinDatPaper on Vimeo.

As most of you probably know by now,NFL star Michael Vick was sent to prison for fighting dogs. It seems odd to me that in a country where it is legal to hunt deer, geese and other animals for sport that dog fighting would be illegal. I'd like to hear you opinions.

Fedor Emelianenko will lock horns with Josh Barnett in the featured bout at Affliction “Trilogy” on Aug. 1 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. The promotion made the heavyweight matchup official on Friday. The announcement pairs the No. 1 and No. 3 world-ranked heavyweights against one another in a five-round contest. For Emelianenko, it will be his sixth test against a former UFC champion. "I consider Josh as one of the truly best in MMA, I think he is really in his prime right now," Emelianenko said Wednesday on his management’s M-1 Global Web site. "Just like when I fought (Mirko) Cro Cop (Filipovic), he was in his prime as well. At that time it was one of the most anticipated fights in MMA history (and) my fight with Josh can be that as well." Unbeaten in his last 27 fights, the incomparable Emelianenko (30-1, 1 NC) flattened former UFC champions Andrei Arlovski and Tim Sylvia in his most recent outings. The 32-year-old Russian knocked out Arlovski with one punch 3:14 into their match at Affliction “Day of Reckoning.” Hard to handle on his feet and on the ground, Emelianenko has finished his last five opponents inside one round and holds victories against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, 2006 Pride Open Weight Grand Prix winner Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic and former UFC heavyweight champions Mark Coleman and Kevin Randleman. He has delivered 23 of his 30 career wins by knockout, technical knockout or submission. Barnett, a former UFC champion like Arlovski and Sylvia, will carry a four-fight winning streak into the bout. The 31-year-old last appeared in January, when he struck Gilbert Yvel into submission at Affliction “Day of Reckoning.” Barnett has won nine of his last 11 fights, including a victory against Emelianenko’s brother, Aleksander, at a Pride show in 2006. A 6-foot-3, 250-pound catch wrestler, he has secured 15 of his 24 career wins by submission. Other bouts expected for Affliction “Trilogy” include a welterweight showdown pairing former International Fight League champion Jay Hieron with British striker Paul Daley and a lightweight tilt pitting Dan Lauzon against Chris Horodecki. CHAMONIX, France – Karine Ruby, a former Olympic snowboarding champion who had been training to become a mountain guide, died Friday in a climbing accident on Mont Blanc. She was 31. Ruby was roped to other climbers when she and some members of the group fell into a deep crack in the glacier on the way down the mountain, Chamonix police official Laurent Sayssac said. A 38-year-old man from the Paris region died in the fall, and a 27-year-old man was evacuated by helicopter with serious injuries and hospitalized, Sayssac added. French Prime Minister Francois Fillon called Ruby an "exceptional sportswoman." "Karine incarnated the emergence of snowboarding in France," Fillon said in a statement. "The people of France will hold on to the memory of her talent and her joie de vivre." Ruby won a gold medal in the giant slalom at the 1998 Nagano Olympics and a silver in the parallel giant slalom at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games. She was a six-time world champion with 65 snowboard World Cup victories. She retired after the 2006 Turin Olympics, where she was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the snowboardcross event. Ruby had since been working toward becoming a mountain guide and was expected to finish her training in the coming weeks. Source: Associated Press

The city cop who fatally shot an off-duty officer in East Harlem was identified Friday as a 30-year-old Long Islander who has been on the job 4 1/2 years, sources said. Officer Andrew Dunton is based at the 25th Precinct in Manhattan and - at the request of the district attorney's office - has not been questioned about the killing of rookie cop Omar Edwards. Mayor Bloomberg said detectives were reviewing security tapes and questioning the suspected thief Edwards was chasing - with gun drawn - when he was shot and killed. "The only thing that can come out of this is to improve procedures so perhaps it doesn't happen again," Bloomberg said. "We all know policing is a dangerous job and accidents happen when people have guns in their hands, even legal guns in this case which they are authorized and trained to use." The Rev. Al Sharpton called for a federal investigation "to sort out the facts" of the fatal shooting of Edwards, who was 25 and black. Dunton is white. "Can police investigate themselves fairly and impartially?" he asked. "It would seem very difficult at best and unlikely in fact." Both Edwards and Dunton were wearing civvies, but police rules put the burden on an off-duty officer to identify himself in any confrontation with other cops. "The challenging officer, however, also has a responsibility to use sound tactics and judgement in approaching the situation," the NYPD Patrol Guide says. It's unclear if Edwards ID'd himself as a cop when he turned - with the gun still in his hand - to face Dunton and the two other officers with him. Sources said Dunton had his shield out - on a lanyard around his neck - and was wearing the color of the day when he yelled drop it. "This is always a black cop's fear, that he'd be mistaken for a [suspect]," a source said. The tragedy began just before 10:30 p.m. Thursday when Edwards, who worked out of a Manhattan housing unit, noticed the driver's side window of his car was smashed and spotted Miguel Goitia rooting around inside, police said. Edwards raced to his car, which was parked on Second Ave. between E. 124th and E. 125th St., and grabbed Goitia. But the suspect managed to slip out of his sweater and escape - with the cop hot on his heels. At the same time, Dunton and two other officers in an unmarked car saw Edwards running down the street. They made a U-turn and got out. "Police! Stop! Drop it!" two of them yelled, sources said. Then Dunton fired six shots - hitting Edwards twice, once in the left arm and once in the chest, police said. Edwards did not fire his weapon. The cops didn't realize Edwards was one of them until rescue crews cut open his shirt to stop the bleeding and saw a police academy shirt. They then searched his pockets and found his shield, sources said. Investigators said the anti-crime cops later nabbed the car-theft suspect Goitia, whose rap sheet includes five arrests for assault, robbery, and drugs. Edwards' mother, Natalia Harding, said her son's dream was to be a cop "ever since he was a little kid." She said he had just married his girlfriend, Danielle Glen, and they have two kids - 1 1/2-year-old Xavier and 7-month-old Keanua. "I'm hurt that they took my son," the heartbroken mom said between sobs Friday morning at her Brooklyn apartment. "That's my baby they took from me. And all I got was his last hug and kiss when he went to work [tonight] and he said, 'Ma, I'll see you when I come home.'" Edwards' father couldn't fathom how such a fatal mistake could happen. "If a police officer sees someone with a gun, you don't just fire without asking questions or trying to apprehend the person," said Ricardo Edwards, 72. "If the person was firing at a police officer, I understand." Source : New York Daily News

Mop-topped music pioneer Phil Spector was sentenced to 19 years to life in prison Friday for the murder of B-movie actress Lana Clarkson at his castle-like mansion in 2003. The Bronx native, now 69 and ailing, pioneered the "Wall of Sound" recording technique and produced such cultural touchstones as The Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling," and The Ronettes' "Be My Baby." Spector had fallen into virtual obscurity by the time of the shooting but regained international notoriety with tales of his drunken gunplay and the outrageous frizzy wigs he wore at back-to-back criminal trials. The first trial resulted in a hung jury. The second jury found him guilty of second-degree murder. He's vowed to appeal. Clarkson, 40, appeared in the 1985 cult film "Barbarian Queen" and met Spector for the first time only hours before she ended up dead in the foyer of his Alhambra, Calif., house with a gunshot wound to her face. Spector has maintained his innocence, saying Clarkson was despondent over a failed acting career and put the gun in her mouth before pulling the trigger. Prosecutors said the reclusive and mercurial Spector murdered Clarkson when she tried to flee his home before he was ready to say goodbye. Source : New York Daily News

Rapper Tone Loc, best known for late-’80s hits “Wild Thing” and “Funky Cold Medina,” collapsed early Friday morning during a concert at Capt’n Fun Beach Club on Pensacola Beach. The performer, who was born Anthony Terrell Smith, was taken away in an ambulance, and did not appear to be fully conscious. It was unclear what caused the rapper’s collapse. During his performance, which was cut short after about six songs, Tone Loc remarked several times about the heat and humidity. The open-air club on the Portofino Boardwalk is subject to weather conditions, which included temperatures in the low 80s and humidity of about 87 percent, according to weather reports — not unusual for this time of year. Based on a visual estimate, the club was filled to about two-thirds of its capacity at the time of the performance. Officials from Capt’n Fun Beach Club would not comment on the rapper’s collapse. Lee Tyree, one of the Escambia County Sheriff’s deputies working security at the show, said that Tone Loc had a history of seizures. Emergency medical personnel called to the scene would not confirm the statement. Tyree had blood on his shirt after helping carry Tone Loc from the club. The blood appeared to have come from a scrape on the rapper’s elbow. According to the Charlotte Observer’s “Paid to Party” blog, Tone Loc suffered a seizure during a January 2008 performance in Charlotte, N.C., but was able to complete his performance after receiving treatment. EMTs would not name the hospital to which they were taking the rapper. A call to Gulf Breeze Hospital, the nearest hospital to Pensacola Beach, found no patients registered under the rapper’s birth or stage names. Source : Pensacola News Journal

Rapper/reality show star Rev. Rev and his wife, Justine Simmons, are spearheading heading efforts to make the outdoors more appealing to kids with the construction of a new playground. The couple is partnering with the national nonprofit organization KaBoom!, Kool-Aid and more than 200 volunteers to help build the playground at the Odyssey House, 1328 Clinton Avenue, Bronx, NY. The Bronx playground build is the first of more than 220 builds organized by KaBoom! that will take place across the country this year. According to organizers, more than 7,500 children will benefit from the event, which will kick off at 8:30 a.m. on June 18. at the Odyssey House. In addition to the volunteers, Rev. Run and Justine will be on hand to participate in the construction of the playground. A ribbon-cutting ceremony to dedicate the new playground will conclude the event at 2:30 p.m. The playground build is part of a bigger effort by organizers to promote the importance of children going outside to play as well as remind parents to encourage their kids to do so. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that children and adolescents engage in 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day. The organization’s website suggests doing exercises that range from aerobic activity (brisk walking, running, bicycle riding,) to muscle strengthening (push-ups, gymnastics, sit-ups) to bone strengthening (jumping rope, running, and sports such as basketball, volleyball or tennis) at least three days a week.
