Co-pilot Fariq Abdul Hamid (left) and pilot Zaharie Ahmad (center) are under investigation. Ahmad has ties to jailed Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim (right).

Video And Pics After The Jump

CANBERRA, Australia (Associated Press) — As police investigate the two pilots of a Malaysian passenger jet that disappeared more than a week ago, a possibility they must consider — however remote and improbable — is that one of them committed suicide.

While such incidents have happened before, the topic remains almost taboo, with investigators and officials reluctant to conclude that a pilot purposely crashed a plane in order to commit suicide even when the evidence appears compelling.

A dozen years ago, U.S. investigators filed a final report into the 1999 crash of EgyptAir Flight 990, which plunged into the Atlantic Ocean near the Massachusetts island of Nantucket, killing all 217 aboard. They concluded that when co-pilot Gameel El-Batouty found himself alone on the flight deck, he switched off the auto-pilot, pointed the plane downward, and calmly repeated the phrase "I rely on God" over and over, 11 times in total.

batouti000.jpg

Yet while the National Transportation Safety Board concluded that the co-pilot's actions caused the crash, they didn't use the word "suicide" in the main findings of their 160-page report, instead saying the reason for his actions "was not determined." Egyptian officials, meanwhile, rejected the notion of suicide altogether, insisting instead there was some mechanical reason for the crash.

There was also disagreement over the cause of the crash of SilkAir Flight 185, which plunged into a river in 1997 during a flight from Jakarta, Indonesia, to Singapore, killing all 104 passengers and crew. A U.S. investigation found that the Boeing 737 had been deliberately crashed, but an Indonesian investigation was inconclusive.

Mozambique officials have been investigating a crash that killed 33 people in November. They say preliminary investigations indicate that the pilot of the Mozambican Airline plane bound for Angola intentionally brought it down, and they're continuing to look into his possible motives.

A 2014 study by the Federal Aviation Administration indicates that in the U.S. at least, flying remains a remarkably safe mode of transport and pilot suicide is a rare occurrence.

The study found that during the 10 years ending in 2012, just eight of 2,758 fatal aviation accidents in the U.S. were caused by pilot suicide, a rate of 0.3 percent. The report found that all eight suicides were men, with four of them testing positive for alcohol and two for antidepressants.

The cases ranged from a pilot celebrating his 21st birthday who realized a woman didn't want a relationship with him, to a 69-year-old pilot with a history of drinking and threatening suicide by plane. Seven of the cases involved the death of only the pilot; in the eighth case, a passenger also died.

"Aircraft-assisted suicides are tragic, intentional events that are hard to predict and difficult to prevent," the FAA's report found, adding that such suicides "are most likely under-reported and under-recognized."

In at least one case, a major international airline allowed a pilot who had expressed suicidal thoughts to continue flying. He flew nearly three more years, without incident, before he resigned in 1982 with severe obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety and depression.

The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper reported that the Workers Compensation Commission heard that the Qantas pilot struggled several times to resist an overwhelming urge to switch off the plane's engines. Once during a flight to Singapore, the pilot's hand moved "involuntarily" toward the start levers and he was forced to "immobilize his left arm in order not to act on the compulsion."

"He left the flight deck and, once he felt calm enough, returned to his seat," the newspaper reported.

After telling his colleagues of his urges, the newspaper said, the pilot was examined by several doctors and ultimately declared fit to fly.

Malaysia's government said police on Saturday searched the homes of both the pilot and the co-pilot of the missing Malaysia Airlines jet. It said police were examining an elaborate flight simulator taken from the home of 53-year-old pilot Zaharie Ahmad Shah.

12350685666?profile=original

Police also are investigating engineers who may have had contact with the plane before it took off.

Mike Glynn, a committee member of the Australian and International Pilots Association, said a pilot rather than a hijacker is more likely to be able to switch off the communications equipment, adding that he thinks suicide was to blame in the EgyptAir and SilkAir crashes.

"The last thing that I, as a pilot, want is suspicion to fall on the crew, but it's happened twice before," Glynn said.

Still, there is no explanation why the pilot of the missing Malaysia Airlines plane would spirit the jet away to an unknown location and not crash it soon after taking off if he had wanted to commit suicide.

Zaharie was a supporter of a Malaysian opposition political party that is locked in a bitter dispute with the government, according to postings on his Facebook page and a friend, Peter Chong, who is a party member.

Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was sentenced to five years in prison on a sodomy charge — a development that many Malaysians regard as political payback.

Kid Cudi stopped by the Arsenio Hall Show to promote his new album, Satellite Flight: The Journey to Mother Moon.

The former G.O.O.D. Music artist also had a lot to say. During his interview with Arsenio, Cudi discussed his car collection, wanting to help kids dealing with loneliness and suicidal thoughts because he's been battling both for the last 5 years, the surprise release of his album and the current state of hip hop.

"I think the braggadocio, money, cash, hos thing needs to be deaded," Cudi said. "I feel like that's holding us back as a culture, as black people. That doesn't advance us in any way, shape or form. We've been doing that same thing for years now. It's been like four decades of the same old bullsh*t. And I feel like if you're gonna be an artist, there's a time when you have to embrace the responsibility and understand that the power of music is something so special. And to be able to do it on this magnitude where you reach millions of people. It's like, why not use that for good? Why not tell kids something that they can connect with and use in their life?"

Video After The Jump

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (Associated Press) — A Malaysian passenger jet missing for more than a week had its communications deliberately disabled and its last signal came about seven and a half hours after takeoff, meaning it could have ended up as far as Kazakhstan or deep in the southern Indian Ocean, Prime Minister Najib Razak said Saturday.

Najib's statement Saturday confirmed days of mounting speculation that the disappearance of the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 with 239 people on board was not accidental, and underlines the massive task for searchers who already been scouring vast areas of ocean.

malaysia-airlines.jpg

Prime Minister Najib Razak speaks at news conference

"In view of this latest development, the Malaysian authorities have refocused their investigation into the crew and passengers on board," Najib said, stressing they are still investigating all possibilities as to why the plane deviated so drastically from its original flight path.

"Clearly the search for MH370 has entered a new phase," Najib told a televised news conference.

The Malaysian Airlines flight 370 was carrying 239 people when it departed for an overnight flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing at 12:40 a.m. March 8. The plane's communications with civilian air controllers were severed about 1:20 and the plane went missing in one of the most puzzling mysteries in modern aviation history.

The international search for the missing Malaysian jetliner expanded further into the Indian Ocean on Friday amid signs the aircraft may have flown on for hours after its last contact with air-traffic control nearly a week ago.

Najib said investigators now have a high degree of certainly that one of the planes communications, the Aircraft and Communications Addressing and Reporting System, was disabled before the aircraft reached the east coast of Malaysia. Shortly afterward someone on board then switched off the aircraft's transponder, which communicates with civilian air traffic controllers.

12350694895?profile=original

The prime minister then confirmed that Malaysian air force defense radar picked up traces of the plane turning back westward, crossing over peninsular Malaysia into the northern stretches of the Strait of Malacca. Authorities previously had said this radar data could not be verified.

He then said the last confirmed signal between the plane and a satellite came at 8:11 a.m. Malaysian time — 7 hours and 31 minutes after take-off. Airline officials have said the plane had enough fuel to fly for up to about eight hours.

"The investigations team is making further calculations which will indicate how far the aircraft may have flown after this last point of contact," he said.

Najib said authorities had determined that the plane's last communication with a satellite was in one of two possible "corridors" — a northern one from northern Thailand through to the border of Kazakstan and Turkmenistan, and a southern one from Indonesia to the southern Indian Ocean.

12350695078?profile=original

Najib said that searching in the South China Sea, where the plane first lost contact with air traffic controllers, would be ended.

malaysia-airlines.jpg

The current search involved 14 countries, 43 ships and 58 aircraft.

It's amazing what people will say or agree to when you put a camera in front of them. Jimmy Kimmel Live took to the streets of Austin this week, asked festival goers some ridiculous question and got hilarious answers.

People who come to music festivals pride themselves on knowing who the new acts are even if they don't actually know who the new acts are. So we sent a camera crew into the streets of Austin to ask SXSW attendees about bands that do not exist. We made them all up, but that didn't stop people from telling us how much they like them in a special South By Southwest edition of Lie Witness News.

Boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. is facing accusations that he ordered the beating of 2 former employees in retaliation for stealing jewelry from his Las Vegas cribs.

According to TMZ, the 2 men were hired by Floyd to do some work on the homes when expensive items came up missing.

Sources familiar with the situation tell TMZ Sports ... the two men had been hired to work on Floyd's Vegas homes ... but when jewelry went missing, Floyd pointed the finger at them.

We're told the men claim they were contacted several weeks ago and instructed to meet Floyd at an off-site location.

When the men arrived, they claim Floyd was waiting for them -- along with a number of his "people" -- who proceeded to beat the living crap out of them with various weapons, including clubs.

Our sources say the attack was so brutal the men could have easily died. Both men had broken arms and legs and were hospitalized for several days.

One source put it this way, "It was some 'Breaking Bad' sh*t."

12350680897?profile=original

If the accusations are proven to be true, they could result in kidnapping, attempted murder and mayhem charges being filed. However it doesn't appear that either of the victims has gone to police. They both hired lawyers, which may mean they are just looking for a big pay day.

Floyd is scheduled to fight Marcos Maidana on Showtime PPV, May 3. Neither the champ's team or Showtime have commented on the report.

**UPDATE** March 14

TMZ has obtained the X-ray results from one of the men who is accusing Floyd Mayweather Jr. of orchestrating a beating at the hands of his crew.

The alleged victim suffered a broken left arm that required drilling to have a titanium plate attached by doctors so it would reset properly.

Other injuries included a broken right pinkie, multiples fractures in the left hand that required pins to reset the bones, a broken left ulna and a cracked right ulna.

You can check out the X-rays below.

**UPDATE** March 15

Las Vegas police are calling the report that Floyd Mayweather Jr. orchestrated an attack on 2 former employees a "rumor." Neither of the 2 men making the accusations has contacted authorities.

Laura Meltzer, a public information officer for the Las Vegas police, spoke by phone with the New York Daily News to shed some light on the situation and explain why Floyd is not under investigation.

So I’ve been trying to put this rumor to rest all week. We’ve had a variety of reports that have come out stating this event occurred. We have not had a victim come forward and make a report like what is being alleged. So if this event occurred, it’s something where the victim has not come forward to the police to make an official complaint. As of right now, the bureau commander over there is not aware of any complaint that has been officially filed. So again, if this is a victim who is choosing not to come forward and make a report - then that’s up to the victim to do. We don’t have any say in that. There is no criminal complaint on file so there is no reason to go and contact Mr. Mayweather.
