LEXINGTON, N.C. (TND) — Authorities in North Carolina said 3 people have been accused of locking a 9-year-old child in a dog kennel.
The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office said 32-year-old Jonathan Starr & 30-year-old Sarah Starr, as well as 56-year-old Shelly Barnes, were arrested on multiple charges, including felony child abuse, child abuse & false imprisonment.
Police said Barnes was also charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and maintaining a dwelling place for controlled substances.
Officers responded to a home in Lexington on Wednesday morning after they received a report about a child who had been locked in a cage overnight.
Deputies forced entry into the dog kennel & rushed the child to EMS personnel who arrived on the scene to assist."
Inside the home, police said they found Sarah Starr, along with 2 other children, who were also evaluated at the scene "but had no obvious injuries."
Police said Davidson County Social Services has taken protective custody of the children, as well as 2 other children who live in the home but were at school at the time of the arrests.
Jonathan Starr & Sarah Starr, along with Barnes, appeared in court on Thursday. While Jonathan Starr & Sarah Starr's bail were increased from $30,000 to $100,000, Barnes’ bond was increased from $60,000 to $300.000.
