CHICAGO (WGN9) — A jury on Friday convicted a man who prosecutors said plotted then tried to cover up the 2015 slaying of a 9-year-old boy who was lured into a Chicago alley with the promise of a juice box.
Corey Morgan was found guilty Friday of first-degree murder of Tyshawn Lee. The verdict came after a separate jury convicted Morgan's co-defendant, Dwright Boone-Doty, on Thursday and after a third man, Kevin Edwards, pleaded guilty last month in exchange for a 25-year prison sentence.
Prosecutors argued that the "execution" of Tyshawn was carried out as revenge, that the suspects believed the fourth grader's father was responsible for a shooting weeks earlier that left Morgan's brother dead and his mother wounded.
"They went after his family, he's going after their family," Assistant State's Attorney Craig Engebretson told jurors.
The three men found Tyshawn shooting baskets on the city's South Side, prosecutors said. Morgan and Edwards watched as Boone-Doty walked over to Tyshawn and struck up a conversation, the said.
What prosecutors said happened next turned one of hundreds of killings in Chicago that year into a national news story: Boone-Doty persuaded Tyshawn to come into an alley — out of sight of anyone else in the park — by promising him a juice box. Once in the alley, Boone-Doty pulled out a gun and fired several times at close range, according to prosecutors.
People in the park who came running over found the boy's body, his basketball a few feet away.
Prosecutors said Morgan gave Boone-Duty the gun just before he approached the boy. The murder weapon, they told jurors, was a gun that another brother of Morgan's had bought in New Mexico and mailed to him.
While Boone-Duty's DNA was found on Tyshawn's basketball, no scientific evidence linked Morgan to the crime. Instead, prosecutors relied on a witness who testified to seeing Morgan at the park and to seeing what he believed was a large gun in Morgan's pocket. They also presented GPS and cellphone evidence they said put him at the park that day, as well as evidence that shortly after the shooting he started looking at the Facebook pages of Tyshawn's father and mother.
"He wants to see them hurt the way he hurt," Engebretson said.
Morgan's lawyers said police focused on him because he was a gang member, and they argued that the person who identified Morgan as being in the park did so only after asking about a reward. Police wanted to quickly solve the case, and that Morgan "made sense" because of the shooting of his brother and mother, attorney Todd Pugh told jurors Thursday.
"He, in the eyes of police, is one of those throwaway people," Pugh said. He later went on to add: "He was a gang banger who police thought was never going to amount to anything.

Report via TMZ -- Looks like all of Tekashi 6ix9ine's singing from the canary cage actually paid off, 'cause the jury just handed out a bunch of guilty verdicts ... including for kidnapping.
The jury reached its decision Thursday in an NYC courtroom and found Anthony "Harv" Ellison guilty of kidnapping in aid of racketeering. He was also found guilty of racketeering conspiracy and maiming and assault with a dangerous weapon in aid of racketeering.
Aljermiah "Nuke" Mack was found guilty of racketeering conspiracy and narcotics trafficking.
Ellison was found not guilty of assault with a dangerous weapon in aid of racketeering. The jury did not reach a verdict on the firearms offense charge because Ellison was found not guilty of the dangerous weapon charge.
You'll recall Ellison was accused of kidnapping and beating Tekashi in the summer of 2018.
As we reported ... Tekashi's multi-day testimony last week directly ID'd Mack and Ellison as the culprits, and he also spilled A LOT more tea about them, their Trey Nine Blood criminal enterprise ... and even ID'd other entertainers as alleged bloods.
As for their alleged role in Tekashi's abduction and subsequent ransom, the rapper testified that both Mack and Ellison orchestrated the scheme for revenge after their relationship turned sour. Dashcam footage played in court appeared to show Mack and Ellison pulling him out of his own SUV, demanding money and cooperation ... according to prosecutors.
Other surveillance footage obtained by the feds which shows what they say is Tekashi's then-girlfriend handing over a bag of money and jewelry.
Tekashi also testified that he initially lied about the circumstances of his kidnapping because he was embarrassed, but insists he was, in fact, hospitalized after being pistol-whipped.
Looks like the jury bought it/most of it ... because they just sealed these guys' fates for a long time. As for Tekashi, that initial 47-year maximum prison sentence is already on its way to getting A LOT shorter.

Report via TMZ -- Antonio Brown was a childish, foul-mouthed monster during his deposition for his condo-trashing case last week ... this according to new court docs filed by the opposing lawyer.
As we previously reported, Brown appeared at a Miami office building to be questioned as part of a lawsuit in which he's accused of going berserk at his luxury condo, causing thousands of dollars in damage, but never paying the bill.
But, attorneys for the complex -- The Mansions at Acqualina -- say once AB sat down for the depo, things quickly spiraled out of control.
"Antonio Brown was extremely noncompliant and flagrantly disorderly, to the point that he frustrated the totality of the proceeding."
Oh, it gets worse ... the attorney claims Brown's deposition was filled with "tumultuous tirades, defiant rants, use of profane language and refusal to comport himself in a civilized and grown-up manner."
"Once the deposition started, almost immediately, [Brown] was belligerent and pugnacious, refusing to answer the most routine of questions."
Instead of answering questions, Brown allegedly "chanted, over and over, as if a mantra, a narrative of his own warped concept of the proceeding, namely that we should only address his counterclaim."
Brown has claimed in legal docs that the condo owners failed to provide adequate security which resulted in a burglary of Brown's unit, in which he claims $80,000 in cash and a gun were stolen.
The deposition ended when Brown started a 5-minute countdown ... and then walked out of the office at noon -- long before it was scheduled to end, the docs say.
According to the docs, Acqualina's legal team wants the judge to force Brown to sit for ANOTHER deposition.
Plus, they want a judge to hit Brown with sanctions for his behavior and they want a "special master" to attend the next depo to make sure Brown complies and behaves himself.

DALLAS, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – State District Judge Tammy Kemp gave Amber Guyger a bible, hugged her and prayed with the former police officer, now convicted of murder after sentencing her to ten years in prison.
The moment caught many in the courtroom off guard, but in a positive way.
It was an emotional day of testimony, outbursts and one very moving victim impact statement at the Frank Crowley Courts Building.
A jury sentenced former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger, who was convicted of murdering her neighbor, Botham Shem Jean in his own home to ten years in prison.
A crowd outside of the courtroom started screaming even before the decision was read. Judge Tammy Kemp asked bailiffs to tell them to “cut that out.”
Jean’s family sat silently after the sentence was read, and looked “shell-shocked,” according to CBS 11 Producer Kelsey Mittauer, who covered the trial.
Supporters of the Jean family started screaming outside the hallway, “No justice, no peace!” Civil rights groups and activists outside the courtroom told CBS 11 News that the sentence is insufficient.
Eventually the Jean family met with jurors in the hallway.
Not long after, Botham’s younger Brandt delivered a heart-felt victim impact statement, telling Guyger, “I forgive you. I know if you go to God and ask him, he will forgive you. I love you just like anyone else. I am not going to say I hope you die just like my brother did… I personally want the best for you. I don’t even want you to go to jail… because that’s exactly what Botham would want to. Again I love you, as a person.”
He then asked if it was OK for him to hug Guyger. So he did.

A white Dallas police officer was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in prison for killing her black neighbor in his apartment, which she said she mistook for her own unit one floor below.
Victim impact statements began with Botham Jean's 18-year old brother Brandt Jean: "If you truly are sorry, I forgive you. I love you just like anyone else. I want the best for you, and I wasn't going to say this in front of my family — I don't even want you to go to jail. I want the best for you. Because that's what Botham would want for you."
Brandt Jean then asked for permission to hug Guyger, which the judge allowed.
A Dallas County jury sentenced former police officer Amber Guyger to 10 years in prison after convicting her of murdering her upstairs neighbor Botham Jean in his apartment last year.
Guyger claimed she thought Jean was a burglar when she entered the apartment after mistaking it for hers.
Guyger, 31, had been facing between five and 99 years or life in prison.
