NEW YORK (Fox 5) - The NYPD has arrested a man accused of murdering former New York City drug lord Alberto "Alpo" Martinez.
27-year-old Shakeem Parker faces murder and weapons charges in connection with the case.
Martinez was shot and killed in Harlem on Oct. 31, 2021. The NYPD was called to Frederick Douglass Boulevard near W. 147th St. just before 3:30 a.m.
A dark, red pickup truck had crashed into parked cars. Martinez, the driver, had been shot 5 times in the chest through the car window. He continued to drive the truck approximately four blocks before crashing.
EMS took him to NYC Health + Hospitals Harlem but it was too late to save his life.
Martinez became famous in the 1980s for his murderous ways and mountains of drugs and cash. He was immortalized in dozens of rap songs and the movie Paid in Full.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Authorities seized nearly $3 million worth of methamphetamine, hidden among a shipment of onions, during a tractor-trailer’s inspection at federal facility in San Diego, officials announced Friday.
A K-9 unit for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection alerted to the trailer’s shipment of onions on Sunday and officers found nearly 1,200 small packages of meth, the agency said Friday in a news release.
The 46-year-old driver, a Mexican national who was not named, was arrested for the alleged narcotic smuggling attempt at the Otay Mesa port-of-entry commercial vehicle facility, officials said.
The packages of meth — more than 1,336 pounds (606 kilograms) — were shaped into small globes with a white covering, the agency said, and meant to blend into the onions. The drugs are estimated to be worth $2.9 million on the street.
“This was not only a clever attempt to try and smuggle in narcotics, one I haven’t seen before, but also time consuming to wrap narcotics into these small packages, designed to look like onions,” said Sidney Aki, CBP Director of Field Operations in San Diego, in the news release. “While we have certainly seen narcotics in produce before, it’s unusual for us to see this level of detail in the concealment.”

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — In a dramatic escalation of East-West tensions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin ordered Russian nuclear forces put on high alert Sunday in response to what he called “aggressive statements” by leading NATO powers.
The directive to put Russia’s nuclear weapons in an increased state of readiness for launch raised fears that the crisis could boil over into nuclear warfare, whether by design or mistake.
Putin’s step is “potentially putting in play forces that, if there’s a miscalculation, could make things much, much more dangerous,” said a senior U.S. defense official.
Putin, in giving the nuclear alert directive, cited not only statements by NATO members — who have rushed to reinforce the military alliance’s members in Eastern Europe — but the hard-hitting financial sanctions imposed by the West against Russia, including Putin himself.
Speaking at a meeting with his top officials, Putin told his defense minister and the chief of the military’s General Staff to put nuclear forces in a “special regime of combat duty.”
“Western countries aren’t only taking unfriendly actions against our country in the economic sphere, but top officials from leading NATO members made aggressive statements regarding our country,” Putin said in televised comments.
U.S. defense officials would not disclose their current nuclear alert level except to say that the military is prepared all times to defend its homeland and allies.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki told ABC that Putin is resorting to a pattern he used in the weeks before the invasion, “which is to manufacture threats that don’t exist in order to justify further aggression.”
The practical meaning of Putin’s order was not immediately clear. Russia & the U.S. typically have land & submarine-based nuclear forces on alert and prepared for combat at all times, but nuclear-capable bombers & other aircraft are not.
If Putin is arming or otherwise raising the nuclear combat readiness of his bombers, or if he is ordering more ballistic missile submarines to sea, then the United States might feel compelled to respond in kind, said Hans Kristensen, a nuclear analyst at the Federation of American Scientists. That would mark a worrisome escalation, he said.

A former police captain has been acquitted of murdering a fellow cinema-goer who threw popcorn at him.
Jurors in Florida decided Curtis Reeves was not guilty of second-degree murder and aggravated battery, after he shot 43-year-old Chad Oulson dead in a movie theatre in an argument about texting during the previews.
The incident happened in a Wesley Chapel cinema in January of 2014, when Oulson was on a matinee date with his wife to see the Mark Wahlberg film "Lone Survivor."
Before the movie had even started, as the trailers were playing, Oulson began texting his young daughter's babysitter & Reeves, sitting behind him, got upset.
After exchanging words, Reeves went to complain to management. when he returned, Oulson had put away his phone, but Reeves made a comment that had he done so sooner, he wouldn't have had to report him to the manager.
This prompted another exchange of words & that's when Oulson threw a bag of popcorn at him.
"The defendant removed a handgun & shot the suspect in the chest," the affidavit reads.
Oulson's wife Nicole, who had her hand on her husband's chest as the men argued in an effort to get him to sit back down, was struck in the finger, almost severing it. The bullet went through her finger & pierced her husband's lung & heart, killing him.
Reeves claimed to police at the time Oulson had "stuck him in the face with an unknown object"; he removed the 380 semi auto handgun from his pocket & shot him because "he was in fear of being attacked."
The affidavit also states that "witnesses advised they did not observe any punches being thrown."
He claimed Oulson had been aggressively leaning over a chair toward him and had thrown a cellphone at Reeves' head; again no witnesses reported seeing a phone being thrown.
"I truly thought this was the end of the line for me," Reeves testified. "I thought at the very least I would be seriously injured, if not killed."
“I didn't want to shoot anybody. I came to the theater with my family to enjoy a movie, not to be attacked by some guy that's out of control."
Prosecutor Scott Rosenwasser told the court that despite Reeves claiming he didn't know what had hit him, 3 witnesses testified hearing him say something about "throwing popcorn in my face" before he fired the fatal shot.
But ultimately, the jury of 4 men and 2 women took three-and-a-half hours to decide it was justified self-defense.

Snootie Wild died after being shot in Houston Friday, the second Memphis rapper to be gunned down in recent months.
The “Yayo” artist’s death was confirmed on his verified Instagram page Saturday evening.
“Gone in body, but your NAME & LEGACY will live forever! #TeamYayo4Life,” the post read.
Wild was found shot in the neck in a ditch next to an SUV around 2 p.m. by Texas police, according to ABC 13, a report that was later linked to Wild’s death.
“It looks like he backed in there (the ditch) accidentally. Then the other vehicle pulled up, and folks got out of the car,” a Houston officer told the outlet.
“They were talking for a little bit, and then all of a sudden, gunfire went off. Only one shot, actually.”
The 36-year old, born LePreston Porter, was not immediately pronounced dead and was fighting for his life Friday afternoon, his Facebook page said.
There was no word on any arrests in connection with the murder.
Tributes from hip hop artists like Sonny Digital and Three 6 Mafia’s DJ Paul poured in on social media for the Yo Gotti protégé.
The news came after rapper Young Dolph, who had a long running feud with Gotti, was shot dead outside a Memphis bakery in a broad-daylight ambush. Three suspects were arrested in connection with that murder, and Gotti was not implicated.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States, European Union & United Kingdom on Saturday agreed to put in place crippling sanctions on the Russian financial sector, including a block on its access to the global financial system & for the first time, restrictions on its central bank in retaliation for its invasion of Ukraine.
The measures were announced jointly as part of a new round of financial sanctions meant to “hold Russia to account and collectively ensure that this war is a strategic failure for (Russian President Vladimir) Putin.” The central bank restrictions target the more than $600 billion in reserves that the Kremlin has at its disposal, meant to limit Russia’s ability to support the ruble amid tightening Western sanctions.
Cumulatively the steps announced by the West since Russia began the invasion would potentially amount to some of the toughest sanctions on any country in modern times & if fully carried out as planned, would severely damage the Russian economy & markedly constrain its ability to import & export goods.
U.S. officials said Saturday’s steps were framed to send the ruble into “free fall” & promote soaring inflation in the Russian economy. They noted that previously announced sanctions have already had an impact on Russia, bringing its currency to its lowest level against the dollar in history and giving its stock market the worst week on record.
The decline of the ruble would likely cause higher inflation, which would hurt everyday Russians & not just the Russian elites who were the targets of the original sanctions. It would be a substantial widening of the economic pain.
Saturday’s move includes cutting key Russian banks out of the SWIFT financial messaging system, which daily moves countless billions of dollars around more than 11,000 banks & other financial institutions around the world. The fine print of the sanctions was still being ironed out over the weekend, officials said, as they work to limit the impact of the restrictions on other economies & European purchases of Russian energy.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — 14 people were shot before dawn Saturday morning at a hookah parlor & police said 1 man died & that 2 of those hit by gunfire suffered critical injuries.
The shooting happened at about 3:15 a.m. & preliminary information indicated there was a party during which 2 people got into an altercation & exchanged gunfire, striking multiple people, said police Capt. Dori Koren.
Koren told reporters no arrests have been made & no suspect descriptions were immediately available but that authorities did not believe there was any danger to the general public.
Police went to the hookah bar identified as Manny’s Glow Ultra Lounge & Restaurant after receiving multiple 911 calls.
Officers secured the scene & rendered aid, including applying tourniquets & administering CPR.
Investigators were trying to determine the types of gun or guns used in the shooting.
”It’s a fairly large scene so it’s going so take some time to go through the entire scene,” he said. “We’re not really sure exactly what kind of weapon was used, or exactly if there were two shooters. We believe there was an exchange of gunfire, but we’re still looking into all of information.”
The medical aid provided to victims by the officers who initially responded “definitely made a significance in this case.”
Hookahs are water pipes that are used to smoke specially made tobacco that comes in different flavors.
Hours after the shooting, much of shopping plaza where the shooting occurred remained cordoned off by police tape as officers looked for stray bullets & other evidence.

Jussie Smollett wants a do-over in court, he's asking for a new trial in Chicago and taking issue with the initial jury selection process -- but he'd also willing to accept a not-guilty verdict.
The actor's defense team just filed new legal docs, obtained by TMZ, asking the judge to reverse the verdict and find him not guilty of disorderly conduct for faking a police report ... or at least give him a new trial.
Remember ... a jury in Illinois decided Jussie was lying to cops about being the victim of a homophobic and racist attack. The jurors found the "Empire" actor guilty of 5 of the 6 felony counts against him, including disorderly conduct charges or allegedly providing a false report to cops.
In the docs, Jussie claims the court violated his constitutional rights when it prevented his defense team from actively participating in the jury selection process.
Jussie claims his lawyers were not allowed to ask questions of potential jurors ... and his defense claims the jury pool for the high-profile case was tainted.
He's also claiming prosecutors showed a pattern of racism in selecting jurors.
In the docs, Jussie's defense also claims the judge wrongfully barred the media and public from the courtroom ... and he says prosecutors pressured witnesses to give false testimony.
That's not all ... Jussie's legal team also says the judge wrongfully limited the defense questioning of witnesses.
Jussie's legal team signaled an appeal was coming after the verdict was reached back in December ... and now they've followed through.
