AP — A judge on Thursday sentenced a white Philadelphia police officer to 11½ to 23 months in prison in the 2017 fatal shooting of an unarmed Black motorist, far less than the decades behind bars he potentially faced.

Eric Ruch Jr. shot & killed 25-year-old Dennis Plowden Jr. 6 seconds after arriving on the scene as Plowden sat on a sidewalk upon crashing a car during a high-speed chase. He was fired from the department months later.

Ruch, 34, was charged in 2020 & convicted in September of voluntary manslaughter & a weapons charge. The voluntary manslaughter charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

But during the sentencing, Judge Barbara McDermott said Ruch had demonstrated good behavior since he was charged & a longer sentence would not offer him any rehabilitation. The sentence also includes parole eligibility & carries no financial penalties.

“Nothing he is going to do in prison is going to make him a better person,” McDermott said.

The judge’s decision outraged Ruch’s family.

“I wasn’t surprised, but I was disappointed,” Plowden’s widow, Tania Bond, said. “Who wastes 5 years to come to court & hear 11 to 23 months? Did we value Dennis’ life or did we just throw something out there to feel like we shut the family up & feel like we satisfied?”

Ruch told jurors he feared for his life when he fired at Plowden. He said Plowden had his left hand raised, but kept his right hand hidden despite police orders.

Prosecutors said there was no justification to shoot Plowden, noting that several other officers took cover & held their fire.

The bullet from Ruch’s gun went through Plowden’s raised left hand before striking him in the head.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The families of Gabby Petito & Brian Laundrie have reached a $3 million settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit filed after authorities concluded he strangled her during a cross-country trip in August 2021.

The settlement was signed Thursday by Sarasota County Circuit Judge Hunter W. Carroll. A lawyer for Petito’s parents said whatever money is received will go to the Gabby Petito Foundation dedicated to locating missing people & curbing domestic violence.

“The Petito family lost their daughter & they were also denied the opportunity to confront her killer,” said attorney Patrick Reilly. “No amount of money is sufficient to compensate the Petito family for the loss of their daughter, Gabby, at the hands of Brian Laundrie.”

The lawsuit claimed Laundrie was liable for damages because he caused her death. A separate lawsuit, still pending in Sarasota, claims Laundrie’s parents wrongly concealed that he confessed to killing Petito before he returned home in September 2021 to Florida from their trip out West in a converted van.

Christopher & Roberta Laundrie denied that claim.

Petito’s disappearance on the trip & the subsequent discovery of her slain body Sept. 19, 2021 became a national obsession.

His remains were found there in October 2021 & investigators say he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound & left a note confessing to Petito’s slaying.

The Petito family has also filed a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit against police in Moab, Utah, where the couple got into a physical altercation but were allowed by officers to resume their journey despite clear danger signs of domestic violence. 

Petito & Laundrie were engaged to be married.

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers detained 25-year-old Johnathan Porter, AKA Blueface, on charges related to a shooting that happened on October 8 in the 6300 block of Windy Road.

Porter was taken into custody in front of a store in the 300 block of Hughes Center Drive.

LVMPD says Porter will be taken into custody at the Clark County Detention Center on warrants for firing a gun at or into an occupied building and attempted murder with a deadly weapon.

FRESNO, California (ABC7) -- A woman and her boyfriend were charged Monday with the murder of her 18-year-old sister & 3-week-old niece who were shot in their Fresno home out of jealousy & sibling rivalry in September.

Yarelly Solorio-Rivera, 22, & Martin Arroyo-Morales, 26, were each charged with 2 counts of murder & a special circumstance of multiple murders in the Sept. 24 killings of Yanelly Solorio-Rivera & her baby.

Yarelly Solorio-Rivera also was charged with 2 enhancements of "personal & intentional discharge of a firearm causing death."

She & her boyfriend allegedly agreed to kill her sister & she fired a 9mm handgun multiple times as her sister & niece slept, killing them both.

Fresno police arrested the couple last week & they are being held at the Fresno County Jail on a $2 million bond.

Fresno Police Chief Paco Balderrama said after the arrests that when officers arrived they found Yanelly Solorio-Rivera shot to death in her bed with her baby Celine in her arms.

"The murder scene was traumatic for all officers, detectives, EMS personnel & crime scene technicians who responded to the scene," he said.

If convicted of all charges, they face life without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.

CNN — A middle school teacher in Pflugerville, Texas, has been fired, district officials said Monday, after video was posted to social media showing the White teacher tell his students his race “is the superior one.”

In 1 video, the teacher can be seen saying to his multi-racial class, “Deep down in my heart, I’m ethnocentric, which means I think my race is the superior one.”

A student off camera asks, “So White is better than all?”

The teacher replies, “Let me finish. I think everybody thinks that. They’re just not honest about it.”

After some other discussion in the video, a student asks, “You said you are a racist, right?”

“I did, yeah, I’m trying to be honest,” the teacher replies.

In the audio, a student asks the teacher to repeat himself. The teacher says, “I said, ‘I am a racist.’ That’s what I said. Do you know what that means?”

Students’ responses overlap & the teacher continues, “It means that deep down in my heart, I think my race is the superior race. That’s what it means to be a racist.”

The teacher in question has not been identified by PfISD, nor has the district provided any additional context surrounding the conversation.
