Kirstie Alley, the star of Cheers & Drop Dead Gorgeous, has died. She was 71.

Alley's children, True & Lillie Parker, announced the actress had died after a short battle with cancer. In a statement to PEOPLE, True and Lillie confirmed that Alley died on Monday.

"We are sad to inform you that our incredible, fierce & loving mother has passed away after a battle with cancer, only recently discovered," they said in a statement.

"She was surrounded by her closest family & fought with great strength, leaving us with a certainty of her never-ending joy of living and whatever adventures lie ahead," they continued. "As iconic as she was on screen, she was an even more amazing mother and grandmother."

Alley's friend John Travolta paid tribute to the actress on social media following the news of her death.

"Kirstie was one of the most special relationships I've ever had. I love you Kirstie," he shared alongside a snap of the late star. "I know we will see each other again."

Alley rose to fame in 1987 when she starred as Rebecca Howe on NBC's Cheers.

She earned a Golden Globe for best actress and an Emmy for outstanding lead actress in 1991. She went on to receive her second Emmy win for her portrayal of Sally Goodson in David's Mother in 1994.

Alley also appeared on television shows including Veronica's Closet, Fat Actress, Kirstie & Scream Queens.

In 2010, her life was chronicled on the A&E reality TV series Kirstie Alley's Big Life. She also competed on season 12 of Dancing with the Stars & The Masked Singer.

She also starred on the big screen in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), Summer School (1987), Look Who's Talking (1989), It Takes Two (1995) and Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999).

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A southern Minnesota school district is expected to vote Monday on a $1.1 million state grant meant to help curb drug use among students of color after a pair of board members delayed accepting the money by arguing it could discriminate against white students.

At least 5 members of the 7-person Faribault school board say they will vote in favor of accepting the funding when it comes to a vote Monday evening. In November, 4 of the board’s members had been deadlocked in a vote after 2 members argued that programs specifically for students of color were unfair to white students.

“Would we ever go after a grant that only targeted whites with hopes that it would trickle down to our BIPOC community? Would we do the opposite? And I don’t think we would,” Board Member LeeAnn Lechtenberg said at the meeting.

She, along with Board Member Richard Olson voted against the program. 

The district serves Faribault, a city of 24,000 people. About 73% of the city is white, but it also has significant Latino & Black populations, including a Somali American community. More than 60% of the school district’s students are people of color.

A mother from the Somali community approached the school board last summer with concerns about drug use among youth in her community & the district applied for a $1.1 million grant from the Minnesota Department of Human Services to curb drug use among Black, Indigenous & other students of color.

Metro Boomin has poignantly tied the theme of his new album to the recent loss of his mother -- inviting dozens of single moms to an NFL game ... with on-field access!!!

The record producer organized an awesome initiative Sunday for the Steelers' game against the Atlanta Falcons, who were hosting at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. MB -- who's originally from the area -- had some guests attend on his behalf ... a lot of them, in fact.

You see ... Metro bought tickets for 26 mothers from around the country as well as their children -- which made for a mini family parade through the tunnel and onto the main stage pre-kickoff.

Not just that, but the group here also got to stand next to the Falcons players for the national anthem ... so, better than a front-row seat. They were the main attraction! Metro himself did not attend -- our sources tell us he wanted the mama bears to have the spotlight.

It was a pretty awesome moment, to say the least ... and the reason Metro did it, we're told, was two-pronged -- one, he wanted to honor his own late mother, who tragically died during an apparent DV incident.

At the same time, Metro wanted to recognize single moms for the heroes they are ... which ties into his latest project, "HEROES & VILLAINS," which is out now.

We're told this effort -- which Metro calls "Single Moms Are Superheroes," in partnership with the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation -- is a way to help these ladies amid struggles they might face as solo parents. With this nonprofit he's established, they can now get more assistance than they might otherwise receive.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The man accused in the deadly shooting Migos rapper Takeoff appeared in probable cause court in downtown Houston late Friday night.

The suspected gunman, 33-year-old Patrick Clark, was surrounded by officers.

During Clark's court hearing, we learned video evidence, license plate information from the car he left in & fingerprints from a wine bottle led to his arrest.

Investigators said the shooting stemmed from a fight over a high-stakes dice game at the 810 Billiard and Bowling alley.

HPD said Takeoff was at the wrong place at the wrong time, considering he reportedly wasn't involved in the game or the fight.

The state set his bond at $2 million after authorities believe Clark was trying to get out of town.

According to documentation, Clark purchased plane tickets to Mexico two days before being arrested & applied for & received an expedited passport.

The state also said he was able to get the passport & when he was arrested, officers found a large amount of cash on him.

"The court finds this behavior suggests; Indeed, you pose a flight risk and therefore the court is going to follow the recommendation of the prosecutor & set your bond at $2 million," the judge said.

Clark's next court appearance which is set for Monday.

VALLEY, Ala. (WIAT) – One of the officers who’d come to arrest Martha Menefield, an 82-year-old Black woman, for failure to pay a $77 trash bill, told her not to cry.

When 2 officers pulled up outside her Valley, Alabama home on Sunday, Menefield didn’t know why they were there. She said the officers – 1 white, 1 Black – got out of their patrol car & approached her home. One of the officers said they were there to arrest her for failure to pay her trash bill.

Menefield just laughed. She genuinely thought the officer was joking.

“You’re not kidding?” She recalled asking him. He wasn’t. He was there to arrest her for failure to pay $77.80. She thought the bill had already been paid, “but they said it hadn’t.”

Menefield said the officers told her they would have to place her in handcuffs. She put her hands behind her back. The front will do, they told her.

Menefield slowed as she told the story. She held her arms out in front her. “And the cuffs,” she said, her eyes swelling with tears. “They’re so heavy.”

When the officer told her not to cry, Menefield looked back at him.

“How would you feel if they came & arrested your grandmama,” she asked the officer. He didn’t respond.

“I’m just happy my grandkids weren’t here to see that,” Menefield said, her voice shaking. “That would have upset them. I was so ashamed. And it’s been bothering me.”

“This isn’t a criminal act,” Menefield’s daughter, Neketti Tucker said. “This is civil, if anything.”

Menefield said she wasn’t in the Valley Jail for long, but believes she should’ve never been there to begin with.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Investigators believe the 7-year-old girl who vanished from her North Texas home on Wednesday was abducted & then killed about an hour later.

Without knowing her fate, authorities issued a statewide Amber Alert the following day for Athena Strand, whom the Wise County Sheriff's Office said was found dead early Friday evening.

Law enforcement did not immediately say where she was found or how she died.

They revealed, though, that a tip led them to a FedEx contract driver who was making a delivery near the girl's home at about the same time she went missing. Investigators believe that driver, who's identified as 31-year-old Tanner Horner, took & then killed Athena.

The sheriff's office did not elaborate on how they connected Horner to the missing girl.

Horner was taken into custody & booked into the Wise County Jail on capital murder & aggravated kidnapping charges. His bond was set at $1.5 million.

FedEx sent ABC the following statement:

"Words cannot describe our shock and sorrow at the reports surrounding this tragic event. First and foremost, our thoughts are with the family during this most difficult time, and we continue to cooperate fully with the investigating authorities. At this time, any further questions should be directed to law enforcement."

Jackson State coach Deion Sanders has been preparing to make an exit in order to take the head coaching job at Colorado.

With Jackson State on the cusp of the SWAC title game Saturday, Sanders & his associates have spent the week making inquiries to both potential members of his on-field staff & support staff at Colorado, pitching them to join him in Boulder.

Internally at Colorado, according to sources, the support staff has been seen preparing material for Sanders' hire. There's a widespread expectation in the building that Sanders will arrive there this weekend, although the staff has not been told formally.

"They're not doing a great job of hiding this," said a staff source. "If he backs out of this deal, it would be a huge problem for Colorado."

Sanders has said publicly that he's been offered the Colorado job. All signs point to him accepting it in the next 48 hours.

Sanders has gone 26-5 his past three seasons at Jackson State & 22-2 the past 2 years. Jackson State (11-0) plays Southern (7-4), a team it beat 35-0 earlier in the year, for the SWAC title Saturday. Sanders is expected to inform his team that he's leaving soon after the game.

Sanders is in just his third season as a college football coach.

Sanders is an iconic American athlete and a member of both the Pro Football & College Football Hall of Fame. He played in the NFL for 14 seasons, won two Super Bowls & also played for 5 different Major League Baseball teams from 1989 through 2001.

Dec 2 (Reuters) - Millions of New York rats have been put on notice: the most populous city in the U.S. is hiring a director of rodent mitigation, a new position that calls for a "swashbuckling attitude" & a "general aura of badassery."

The new job, posted earlier this week, is part of the city's attempt to curb an explosion in its rodent population since the pandemic began. Rat sightings on the streets, in subways & even homes have jumped 71% over in the past 2 years.

"There’s NOTHING I hate more than rats," Mayor Eric Adams said in a tweet on Thursday in announcing the job posting. "If you have the drive, determination & killer instinct needed to fight New York City’s relentless rat population - then your dream job awaits."

Sidewalk dining outside of restaurants - first allowed in 2020 as a temporary measure to help blunt economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic, has been blamed in part for the rat explosion. The city is exploring ways to allow for permanent "streeteries."

In October, New York officials announced stiffer restrictions regarding the placement of garbage bags on curbs to be picked up by sanitation workers. The trash has encouraged the explosive growth of the city's rat population.

Urban legend says there is one rat for each of New York City's 8.8 million residents. But a 2014 study showed the city likely had about 2 million rats.

The new job will pay between $120,000 & $170,000. Applicants must reside in New York City, hold a bachelor's degree & be willing to perform "Catch and Kill" functions by using hands-on techniques to exterminate rodents, the posting said.

"The ideal candidate to be highly motivated & somewhat bloodthirsty, determined to look at all solutions from various angles, including improving operational efficiency, data collection, technology innovation, trash management & wholesale slaughter," it said.

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner says 33-year-old Patrick Xavier Clark has been charged with Takeoff's murder. He was arrested Thursday evening.

Takeoff, whose real name is Kirsnick Khari Ball, was killed when gunfire erupted outside of a private party at a Downtown Houston bowling alley on Nov. 1. Two others were hit by gunfire but survived.

Police believe the shooting happened after a dice game, but Takeoff was an innocent bystander.

"There was a lucrative dice game that went on at the event. There was an argument that happened afterwards outside the bowling alley, which led to the shooting," said HPD Homicide Division Sgt. Michael Burrow. "I can tell you that Takeoff was not involved in playing in the dice game, he was not involved in the argument that happened outside. He was not armed."

An autopsy showed Takeoff died from gunshot wounds to the head and torso. His manner of death was ruled a homicide.

Takeoff was part of the Grammy Award-nominated rap trio Migos with his uncle Quavo and cousin Offset from suburban Atlanta.
