MEXICO CITY (USA Today/MMA Junkie) – In a back-and-forth fight that threatened to end at any moment, UFC interim heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum spoiled Cain Velasquez’s homecoming and unified the title.
Werdum (20-5-1 MMA, 8-2 UFC) went toe-to-toe with Velasquez (13-2 MMA, 11-2 UFC) over three rounds and hurt him enough to draw an exhausted takedown attempt, which he promptly capitalized on with a guillotine choke that forced a tap at the 2:13 mark of the frame.
“I had a good strategy,” Werdum said afterward. “I had a big dream, and I got it today.”
The heavyweight title unification bout was the main event of today’s UFC 188 event at Mexico City Arena in Mexico City. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and UFC Fight Pass.
Werdum, No. 3 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA heavyweight rankings, took the Mexican-American Velasquez’s best shots and countered with his own, frequently staggering with champ with his right hand in a fight where elevation was a third opponent throughout the card.
“I was here for 34 days (before the fight card),” said Werdum, who acted as his own translator after giving answers in Spanish.
At 7,382 feet above sea level, both men showed signs of fatigue as the frantic pace of the fight extended into the second and third rounds. Velasquez, who hadn’t fought since winning a October 2013 trilogy bout with now-former champ Junior dos Santos, appeared to be severely affected by the altitude.
“For two weeks, I was out here training,” Velasquez, No. 5 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA pound-for-pound rankings and No. 1 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA heavyweight rankings, said afterward. “I guess it wasn’t enough.”
Still, Velasquez kept his characteristically intense pace, hoping to take Werdum’s legs from him with persistent kicks. Werdum, meanwhile, worked a jab and worked hard to answer every attack.
When Velasquez knocked Werdum foe down early, he declined an extended engagement on the ground, fearing his Brazilian opponent’s dangerous submission game. Instead, Velasquez worked steady one-two combinations and overhand rights, pressuring his opponent to the fence. Every time, Werdum fought off the cage and caught the champ with his own combinations.
A knee at the end of the second round sent Velasquez wobbling back to his corner. A cut over his left eye bled generously.
Advised by his corner to take the fight to the ground, Velasquez put Werdum on the mat in the third. But again shying away from grappling with his opponent, a former jiu-jitsu world champion who once famously submitted PRIDE champ Fedor Emelianenko, he gave enough space for a standup.
Werdum then shrugged off a high kick and turned up the pressure on Velasquez, backing him to the cage with a flurry of punches. When Velasquez shot for a takedown, it came more from desperation than strategic thinking.
Velasquez immediately exposed his neck, allowing Werdum to execute a textbook guillotine that left no other option but submission.
“I train a lot, this movement,” Werdum said. “I trained a long time, and I know he was going to go for a takedown on my legs. I just waited for the right moment.”
Released seven years ago by the UFC on the heels of a knockout loss to dos Santos, Werdum completed a journey he began in 2012 after a lackluster loss to Alistair Overeem in a heavyweight tournament in the now-defunct Strikeforce. Frequently an underdog, he bucked expectations with a four-fight win streak that earned him a shot at the UFC heavyweight title.
After a stint as opposing coaches on “The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America,” Werdum and Velasquez were scheduled to meet this past November at UFC 180 in Mexico City. But Velasquez suffered a bad knee injury, and the UFC installed former K-1 champ Mark Hunt in an interim title bout. Again delivering a shocker, Werdum knocked out the knockout artist with a flying knee.
Despite his five-fight streak, Werdum was a 4-1 underdog coming into the UFC 188. Velasquez, meanwhile, received a hero’s welcome in his first fight on Mexican soil.
“I’m sorry to everyone here,” said Velasquez. “My dream was to fight here and win in front of everyone. I didn’t do it tonight, and I’m sorry. I can’t ask for more motivation for me to keep on getting better, come back, and win that belt back again.”
Before UFC 180 and UFC 188, Werdum did his best to charm the Mexican fans by speaking Spanish at every turn. When he walked to the arena, however, he received a significant number of boos.
While he might not have completely won over the crowd tonight, Werdum’s heart and poise made a lot of headway. And it’s doubtful he’ll be the underdog for a while.

Video vixen Allison Brown is taking Tyga back to court asking a judge to force the rapper to pay the remaining half of a sexual assault settlement.
Brown originally sued Tyga, claiming she was humped by a guy in a rabbit suit, plied with alcohol and forced to appear naked while filming the "Make It Nasty" music video in 2011.
TMZ reports that the parties involved reached a settlement earlier this year calling for Tyga to cough up $50,000. Brown claims she's only been paid half of that amount and is seeking the remaining balance.

(Syracuse.com) An Upstate New York prison worker has officially been described as an accessory to the escape of two convicted killers, and more details about their relationship have emerged.
Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie told the Plattsburgh Press-Republican on Thursday that Clinton Correctional Facility employee Joyce Mitchell"has been very cooperative since she was identified as an accessory to the escape."
Mitchell, 51, also known as "Tillie," was a supervisor in the Dannemora prison's tailoring department, where inmates Richard Matt and David Sweat worked. The Albany Times-Union reports she admitted smuggling in power tools for them to cut through steel walls and provided access to a cell phone.
Wylie told NBC News on Friday, however, that Mitchell did not provide power tools. The prosecutor said she did bring in contraband, but wouldn't specify what it was.
Mitchell is believed to have also agreed to drive a getaway car for the pair, but changed her mind at the last minute and was hospitalized with panic attacks.
A CNN source said Mitchell, who's married to another prison employee, told investigators that Matt, 48, made her feel "special." But she may have also had an affair with the younger Sweat, 34.
A state official said the State Department of Corrections received a complaint within the past year about a relationship between Mitchell and one of the two escapees. ABC sources said the man was Sweat, but the DOC's internal investigation didn't lead to any discipline for her.
According to the Times-Union, prison employees and correction officers are prohibited from having relationships with inmates or doing them favors, including contacting family members.
It's unclear what charges Mitchell may face, but Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday: "Anyone who we find cooperated with the escape or facilitated the escape, that is a crime in and of itself and we will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law."
Matt and Sweat escaped "Shawshank Redemption"-style overnight Friday from the maximum security prison, which previously housed Tupac Shakur, Lucky Luciano and "Son of Sam" serial killer David Berkowitz, located about 20 miles south of the Canadian border. New York State Police closed a stretch of Route 374 east of Dannemora on Wednesday night to search for the pair.
Authorities said they may have "contained" the criminals in the small North Country town of Cadyville, between Plattsburgh and Dannemora. WFFF-TV reports a bedding spot was found in the woods where they may have slept after bloodhounds picked up the pair's scent at a nearby gas station and Subway restaurant.
Matt is described as a white male, 6-feet tall, 210 pounds, with black hair and hazel eyes. He has tattoos on his back that say "Mexico Forever", a heart on his chest and left shoulder, and a Marine Corps insignia on his right shoulder.
Sweat is described as a white male, 5-feet, 11-inches tall, 165 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes. He has tattoos on his left bicep and his right fingers.
Both escapees are considered extremely dangerous. Sweat was serving a life sentence for shooting the sheriff's deputy 15 times in 2002. Matt was in prison for the kidnapping, murder and dismemberment of a man who had fired him from his job at a food warehouse.
The state has offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to the capture of both men. People with information can call 1-800-GIVE-TIP.

Rapper YG was injured in Los Angeles early Friday, June 12, after being shot three times in the hip.
TMZ reports that the shooting took place at Studio City around 1.45 a.m. YG, real name Keenon Daequan Ray Jackson, was rushed to the hospital. He's said to be "very uncooperative" with police.
The 25-year old is signed to Young Jeezy's CTE World imprint. In 2014 YG released his debut album, My Krazy Life, led by the hit single "My Nigga."
Rap insider/consultant/publicist Karen Civil tweeted that YG's injuries are "none-life threatening."
**UPDATE** June 13
YG is not cooperating with police investigating his shooting, but they may not need his help to track down his shooter.
TMZ reports that there were multiple surveillance cameras rolling in the area where the incident took place. Some may have been in a position to capture the shooting.
The LAPD are expected to request the footage and receive it within a couple of days.
TMZ also reports that a fight broke out just prior to gunfire erupting. YG was hit three times in the hip. He is expected to make a full recovery.

(CNN) The mother of Rachel Dolezal -- an NAACP leader in Spokane, Washington, who identifies as African-American, though her parents claim she is white -- said Friday that her daughter "has not explained to us why she is doing what she's doing and being dishonest and deceptive with her identity."
Ruthanne Dolezal said her daughter Rachel gradually began referring to herself as black around 2007 and that "she has never claimed to be biracial or African-American in our presence."
The parents last talked to their daughter "some years ago," with Ruthanne Dolezal saying "Rachel has not wanted to have contact with us."

The racial identity of one of the most prominent faces in Spokane, Washington's black community is under question after her parents produced a birth certificate that showed she is white.

Rachel Dolezal, 37, is the head of the local chapter of the NAACP and has identified herself as African-American. But her Montana birth certificate says she was born to two Caucasian parents, according to CNN affiliate KXLY, which also showed an old family photo in its report.

CNN tried to reach Dolezal for comment by emailing and calling her late Thursday night, but was unsuccessful.
Identifies as African-American
Dolezal has represented herself as at least part African-American in an application for the police ombudsman commission.
And she has presented the public with a different family photograph posted to the local NAACP chapter's Facebook page. When she announced her father was coming to town for a visit, she showed herself standing next to an older African-American man.
Dolezal's public racial identity came under scrutiny on Thursday, when a reporter from KXLY held up that photo asked her a simple question.
This is how the conversation went:
"Is that your dad?"
"Yeah, that's...that's my dad."
"This man right here's your father? Right there?"
"You have a question about that?"
"Yes ma'am, I was wondering if your dad really is an African-American man."
"That's a very -- I mean, I don't know what you're implying."
"Are you African-American?"
"I don't understand the question of -- I did tell you that, yes, that's my dad. And he was unable to come in January."
"Are your parents...are they white?"
Dolezal walked away from the microphone, leaving her purse and keys, and took refuge in a nearby clothing boutique.
Career as a black woman
Dolezal has built a wide-ranging career on her racial identity.
She is not just president of her local NAACP chapter; she is also an academic expert on African-American culture andteaches many related classes at Eastern Washington University.
She represents the black community publicly and vocally, including as a spokeswoman on race-influenced police violence. On Tuesday she spoke to Al Jazeera on the topic.
She has appeared alongside Baltimore City State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby, who has filed charges against police officers in the death of Freddie Gray, a young black man.
The mayor of Spokane appointed Dolezal chairwoman of a police oversight committee to keep an eye on fairness in police work.
After the allegations of faked racial identity surfaced, Mayor David Condon and City Council President Ben Stuckart issued a statement. "We... take very seriously the concerns raised regarding the chair of the independent citizen police ombudsman commission." The city is checking to see if she has violated any policies.
Dolezal also has spoken about multiple alleged racist threats made against her, including nooses found near her home. But police never have been able to substantiate them, KXLY reported.
Black family members
Dolezal's mother, Ruthanne Dolezal, told the Spokane Spokesman-Review that after she and her husband adopted four African-American children, Rachel Dolezal began to "disguise herself."
"It's very sad that Rachel has not just been herself," Ruthanne Dolezal said. "Her effectiveness in the causes of the African-American community would have been so much more viable, and she would have been more effective, if she had just been honest with everybody," the newspaper quoted her as saying.
Rachel Dolezal brushed off the controversy surrounding her racial identity as part of a family fight over alleged abuse, the Spokesman-Review reported.
She wouldn't answer the newspaper's questions about her racial heritage directly and said she wanted to talk to local NAACP leadership first. "I feel like I owe my executive committee a conversation," she said.
"That question is not as easy as it seems," Dolezal told the Spokesman-Review. "There's a lot of complexities ... and I don't know that everyone would understand that."
Social media 'transracial'
Social media reactions varied, and some seemed to concur with Dolezal's assessment.
Her name and the term "transracial" were top trending hashtags on Twitter.
Some users floated the notion that people could cross over lines of racial identity as they do with sexual identity.
"Hmm interesting article about #racheldolezal. If she identifies as black, can she be transracial?" one user asked. Other users compared Dolezal with Caitlyn Jenner, former known as Bruce Jenner, often in a derogatory manner.
But many users, particularly African-Americans, bemoaned that switching race doesn't work like switching gender, noting that black people can't pretend to be white to avoid discrimination.
"My prob w/ #Transracial: Black folk cant decide to be white when the cops raid their pool party. But a white woman can be NAACP president," wrote hip-hop artist Lizzo.
"If #RachelDolezal can do it, so can I. I am now a white American. Give me: good credit, the ability to swim, and police NOT beating me," PrestonMitchum tweeted.
"It's not just her appropriation. It's that she claimed an oppression that wasn't hers," wrote user Charles Clymer.
**UPDATE** June 15
In the end the controversy surrounding Rachel Dolezal proved to be too much. According to various media sources she has resigned from her position as the NAACP leader in Spokane, Washington.
Dolezal posted a statement on civil rights group's Spokane Facebook page. Read it below.
Dear Executive Committee and NAACP Members,
It is a true honor to serve in the racial and social justice movement here in Spokane and across the nation. Many issues face us now that drive at the theme of urgency. Police brutality, biased curriculum in schools, economic disenfranchisement, health inequities, and a lack of pro-justice political representation are among the concerns at the forefront of the current administration of the Spokane NAACP. And yet, the dialogue has unexpectedly shifted internationally to my personal identity in the context of defining race and ethnicity.
I have waited in deference while others expressed their feelings, beliefs, confusions and even conclusions - absent the full story. I am consistently committed to empowering marginalized voices and believe that many individuals have been heard in the last hours and days that would not otherwise have had a platform to weigh in on this important discussion. Additionally, I have always deferred to the state and national NAACP leadership and offer my sincere gratitude for their unwavering support of my leadership through this unexpected firestorm.
While challenging the construct of race is at the core of evolving human consciousness, we can NOT afford to lose sight of the five Game Changers (Criminal Justice & Public Safety, Health & Healthcare, Education, Economic Sustainability, and Voting Rights & Political Representation) that affect millions, often with a life or death outcome. The movement is larger than a moment in time or a single person's story, and I hope that everyone offers their robust support of the Journey for Justice campaign that the NAACP launches today!
I am delighted that so many organizations and individuals have supported and collaborated with the Spokane NAACP under my leadership to grow this branch into one of the healthiest in the nation in 5 short months. In the eye of this current storm, I can see that a separation of family and organizational outcomes is in the best interest of the NAACP.
It is with complete allegiance to the cause of racial and social justice and the NAACP that I step aside from the Presidency and pass the baton to my Vice President, Naima Quarles-Burnley. It is my hope that by securing a beautiful office for the organization in the heart of downtown, bringing the local branch into financial compliance, catalyzing committees to do strategic work in the five Game Changer issues, launching community forums, putting the membership on a fast climb, and helping many individuals find the legal, financial and practical support needed to fight race-based discrimination, I have positioned the Spokane NAACP to buttress this transition.
Please know I will never stop fighting for human rights and will do everything in my power to help and assist, whether it means stepping up or stepping down, because this is not about me. It's about justice. This is not me quitting; this is a continuum. It's about moving the cause of human rights and the Black Liberation Movement along the continuum from Resistance to Chattel Slavery to Abolition to Defiance of Jim Crow to the building of Black Wall Street to the Civil Rights and Black Power Movement to the #BlackLivesMatter movement and into a future of self-determination and empowerment.
