LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - R&B singer R. Kelly on Monday denied an article by U.S. media outlet BuzzFeed News that he was keeping a household of young women in a "cult" atmosphere.
"Mr. Robert Kelly is both alarmed and disturbed at the recent revelations attributed to him. Mr. Kelly unequivocally denies such allegations and will work diligently and forcibly to pursue his accusers and clear his name," Kelly's attorney Linda Mensch said in a statement.
Kelly has not been charged with any crime.
BuzzFeed said in an emailed statement, "We stand fully behind the story, which was based on nine months of interviews and old-fashioned investigative reporting."
The BuzzFeed article became one of the top-trending items on social media on Monday. The article cited interviews with two families and three former associates of Kelly.
The article cited one mother saying the set-up was a "cult."
The article said all of the women were over the age of consent. Some family members cited in the article expressed frustration at limited communications with their daughters.
BuzzFeed reported that two families had sought help from police but the women have rebuffed attempts by authorities or their parents to investigate or to bring them home.
Kelly is one of the most successful R&B artists of the last two decades, with three Grammy awards, 12 studio albums and some 40 million records sold worldwide.

Havoc details what it was like growing up in Queensbridge, their first rap names, and reveals Prodigy turned down a deal to work with him at first. The producer then goes on to talk about making their first album, Prodigy teaching him how to sample and them getting a deal at LOUD records.
Throughout the conversation Havoc discusses some of the milestones in their career from the 'Hennesy' shirts, creating "Shook Ones," dissing 2Pac before his death, their beef with Jay-Z, and what it was like seeing Lil Kim write her "Quiet Storm" verse. DMX is free for now after being released from jail on $500,000 bond.
As we previously reported, X real name Earl Simmons, is accused of owing the IRS $1.7 million in taxes, He turned himself in to federal authorities on Thursday, July 13.
During a subsequent hearing, the multi-platinum selling rapper pleaded not guilty to 14 counts of tax evasion.
TMZ reports that on Monday the judge in the case lifted X's travel restrictions, freeing him to leave New York City to work with prior court approval.

Conor McGregor may be finding out that boxing is tougher sledding than he initially thought.
Former 2x world championship boxer, Jessie Vargas, was interviewed recently and claims to have heard that Mystic Mac was put on his back while training for his upcoming fight with Floyd Mayweather.
"He got knocked out in sparring already," Vargas said of McGregor. "The boxing world is small, it's a small circle. I heard they tried Brandon Rios, but Brandon Rios knocked him out, so they had to push him away."
McGregor is set to face Mayweather on August 26th.
