OAKVILLE, Mo. - A social studies assignment asking fifth-grade students at a Missouri school to “set a price” for trading slaves has been called culturally insensitive and the teacher has been put on administrative leave, school officials said.
In a letter sent to parents Monday, Blades Elementary School Principal Jeremy Booker said the assignment was supposed to teach students market value in colonial America, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
“Some students who participated in this assignment were prompted to consider how plantation owners traded for goods and slaves,” Booker wrote.
According to KTVI, the controversial question read, “You own a plantation or farm and therefore need more workers. You begin to get involved in the slave trade industry and have slaves work on your farm. Your product to trade is slaves.”
The question then prompts students to set a price for a slave, noting, “These could be worth a lot.”
A photograph of the question was posted Sunday on Facebook.
Other questions in the assignment focus on trading commodities like fish, grains, lumber and turpentine, KTVI reported.
John Bowman, president of the St. Louis County Chapter of the NAACP, said the assignment was “sad and unacceptable.”
“The position of the NAACP is we need a public apology,” Bowman told KTVI. “There also needs to be some serious and immediate implicit bias, cultural bias, cultural difference training."
In his letter to parents, Booker said he met with the teacher, who “expressed significant remorse,” the Post-Dispatch reported.
The incident is under investigation, and Booker told the newspaper he plans to institute cultural bias training for his teachers and staff members.
“We are working together to ensure all students and families feel valued and respected at Blades Elementary,” Booker wrote.

Juice WRLD's movements have been under the microscope of federal agents since at least last month ... and TMZ has learned it started with another private jet search.
Juice's initial run-in with the feds went down on November 18 at LAX ... according to our law enforcement sources. The rapper and his entourage were boarding their flight bound for Sydney, Australia, when Customs Agents conducted the search.
We're told drug-sniffing dogs were all over Juice and co. and their luggage. It's unclear if agents found anything -- we do know the plane was eventually allowed to take off with Juice on board.
TMZ broke the story ... Homeland Security agents, operating under an FBI task force, searched Juice WRLD's private jet early Sunday morning when it landed at Chicago's Midway Airport.
As we reported, cops confiscated 70 lbs. of marijuana and 3 handguns after searching the plane. We're told Juice suffered his seizure -- which turned out to be fatal -- as agents were conducting their search. Our sources say someone in his entourage told cops he had taken several "unknown pills."
As for why the feds were so keyed in to his late-night flight to Chi-Town? It's possible it had something to do with the intel they'd gathered during the LAX search. Additionally, we're told the pilot had reported Juice's bodyguards for having handguns -- a no-no if they're not packed properly, or if the bodyguard doesn't have a permit.
We've reached out to the FBI for more detail on last month's search, but so far ... radio silence.

PRINCETON, WV — A Virginia woman has been jailed for life for the murder of her boyfriend's disabled son.
Roena Cheryl Mills, 43, killed 29-year-old Bo White on Easter Sunday of 2018, before decapitating him and attempting to chop up the rest of his body. The court heard the Mills had been having sex with Bo as well as his father Jimmy White, whom she had first met while working at a strip club in 1995.
Prosecuting Attorney George Sitler told the court that Bo was "sickly, introverted boy" who still played with Star Wars figures, the Bluefield Daily Telegraph reported. He lived alone, but had money thanks to a disability check.
According to his cellphone found on his headless body at his home, Mills texted him on his last night alive, arranging to meet up: "I'm trying to get my things. Give me a few minutes," she sent him late on March 31.
While the reason for their meeting was not determined, Sitler said one theory was that she was trading pills for sexual favors. "His father had introduced him to a manipulative woman. She knew Bo had a pocket full of pills and a pocket full of cash," Sitler said, describing Bo as "an awkward, sickly shut-in who didn't have a real life."
When Jimmy discovered his son's headless corpse, Sitler told the court his first reaction was to take drugs. "He didn't want to face it,”" he said. "He wanted to get high. That's what junkies do. That's how they deal with life or don't deal with it."
That night, Mills texted people from midnight to 4:30am trying to recruit help as she sought to get rid of the body. One witness, military veteran Jo Fleming testified that Mills asked to borrow gasoline and a chainsaw from him, and wanted him to come with her, but he refused.
This left her with just "cheap kitchen knives" Sitler explained, comparing the task of severing Bo's head to cutting up chicken: "all that flesh and bone is hard to cut with a good knife."
Mills — who has "special kinda crazy" tattooed across her chest — was found on the morning of April 1 emerging from a wooded area, agitated and disheveled, telling deputies they had to let her finish what she was doing and "you have to let me go back and get my heads."
Defense attorney Sid Bell claimed it could not be proven beyond reasonable doubt Mills was responsible for the killing, arguing that Bo's father was a more likely culprit. "Our theory is that Jimmy White was jealous of her relationship with Bo... and Jimmy White is a terrible person," he said.
He pointed out that there was no evidence of any problems between Mills and the victim, and that the blows and stab wounds that killed him required "a lot of strength"
"As an old prosecutor, we call that a crime of passion," he said. "Someone with a lot of strength and a lot of rage had to kill this man."
Nevertheless, the West Virginia jury took less than two hours to find Mills guilty of first-degree murder on Thursday. She was sentenced to life in prison "without mercy" — meaning she has no chance of parole.
