FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — An overnight confrontation between two groups of students escalated into gunfire Friday when a freshman at Northern Arizona University killed one person and wounded three others, authorities said.
University police chief Gregory T. Fowler identified the shooter as 18-year-old Steven Jones and said he used a handgun in the shootings at about 1:20 a.m. Friday. Police were still interviewing Jones and he had not been booked into jail Friday morning.
Steven Jones
The university in a statement identified the student who died as Colin Brough. The victims being treated at Flagstaff Medical Center are Nicholas Prato, Kyle Zientek and Nicholas Piring. The hospital said it couldn't release any information on conditions.
"This is not going to be a normal day at NAU," said school President Rita Cheng. "Our hearts are heavy."
She called it an isolated and unprecedented incident and said classes would go on as scheduled Friday.
The parking lot where the shooting happened is just outside Mountain View Hall dormitory on the Flagstaff campus, which provides housing for many of the campus' sororities and fraternities. The gate to the dorm's main entrance was closed Friday, and police had the surrounding area taped off.
Iowa City, Iowa-based Delta Chi Fraternity said Delta Chi members were involved, but offered no other details.
Alex McIntosh, a friend of Zientek, said he worked part time at the High Country Conference Center while attending the school full time.
"He's very calm, very respectful, has a great manner, calm demeanor and you'd never expect him to be caught up in something like this," McIntosh said.
Brough was from Castle Rock, Colorado, about 30 miles south of downtown Denver. Randy Barber, a spokesman for Douglas County Schools, confirmed that Brough graduated from Castle View High School in 2013. He said the school district had activated a crisis team to support students and staff at the high school.
Student Maria Gonzalez told The Associated Press that she at first suspected firecrackers when the shooting happened.
"I was studying for an exam so I looked out the window and see two people running, and that's when I realized they weren't fireworks they were actually gunshots," she said.
Arizona political leaders voiced support for the university and surrounding community, with Gov. Doug Ducey calling the shooting heartbreaking. He said the state stands ready to help in the investigation and response.
Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, who lives in Flagstaff, expressed confidence that the city "will only grow stronger in difficult moments like these."
The Flagstaff shooting comes on the same day that President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit Roseburg, Oregon, where eight students and a teacher were shot and killed last week at Umpqua Community College. The gunman in the Oregon shooting wounded nine others before turning the gun on himself.
NAU is a four-year public university that has more than 25,000 total undergraduate students at the campus in Flagstaff, a city about two hours north of Phoenix that is surrounded by mountains and ponderosa pines.
Freshman Cameron Sands, 18, said he had pledged at a fraternity and was supposed to move into Mountain View Hall on Friday.
"It's crazy. You don't think this stuff happens. When I think of Flagstaff, I think safety," he said.

Def Squad member Keith Murray came through to chop it up with VladTV after his heavily scrutinized battle with Fredro Starr.
Murray detailed how the battle between he and Fredro came into fruition. He reveals that MC War initially contacted him with Black Rob lined up as his opponent. Unfortunately, the former Bad Boy artist backed out of the match-up and that is when Fredro Starr stepped up the plate. Last year, there was another mishap as Keith and Fredro were scheduled to battle in Atlanta but the showdown was cancelled as fans waited in the venue. When asked, the Long Island native informed Vlad that money issues led to the postponement of the match-up.
Many were disappointed and even ridiculed Murray for his lackluster bars during the event, some even stated that his performance (or lack thereof) was detrimental to the culture. After apologizing to the public, Keith expounded on the reason behind his inebriated appearance and his lack of focus. Despite that, Murray believes if he wasn't distracted he would have won that battle. "Fredro Starr won by default, Keith defeated [him]self. I'm up for a rematch right now, anytime! And anybody who thinks they want to challenge Keith Murray, I'm open for that challenge too. It was something fresh and new, and I'm not making excuses the people wanted to know," asserted the rapper.
Murray then delves into mic issues, how he felt battling over beats as opposed to acapella as most battles take place. He also addressed Fredro Starr calling him a dusthead, why he didn't go the personal route, and assured us that the Moesha co-star could never seen him on any level.
Listen to the full clip below and give your opinion. Do you think Keith Murray would've done better against Black Rob? Are you interested in seeing a rematch between Keith Murray and Fredro Starr.

Ar-Ab got pulled into Meek Mill and Drake's beef after the "Lord Knows" rapper said "f*ck Ar-Ab" during a show, which ultimately led to both sides of their camp going at one another. After Meek's cousin Omelly threw shots at Ar-Ab online, Dark Lo released his "Warm Ups" diss, which he told VladTV wasn't something he wanted to do.
He explained, "I'm not really with bashing Meek...because we're all from Philly, and I feel like it's kicking him while he's down." Ar-Ab chimed in and explained that Omelly is actually "one of the nicest people," despite some people thinking that he's Meek's goon.
During the conversation Ar-Ab and Dark Lo also spoke about being approached by police after getting dragged in the fight. Dark Lo revealed that he was "hemmed up" by officers while shooting a video, but he made it clear that the beef wasn't going to turn into any street violence.
Ar-Ab also shared how Meek's probation officer confronted him about the situation, which you can hear more about in the clip below.

Matt Barnes and Derek Fisher got into a physical altercation in Los Angeles over the weekend after Barnes got a call from his 6-year old twin boys informing him that Fisher was at the home he once shared with Gloria Govan.
Barnes bolted from the training facility of his current team, the Memphis Grizzlies, and reportedly drove 95 miles to confront the current coach of the New York Knicks.
“Barnes went crazy. He got in his car and went to the house and went after Fisher,” a source told the New York Post. “Matt then drove down there to beat the shit out of him.”
Barnes approached Fisher in the backyard of the home where Govan, Fisher and 10 other people had gathered around a bonfire
An argument ensued and the 6-foot-7 Barnes punched the 6-foot-1 Fisher in the mouth, according to TMZ, sparking a brawl that didn't end until Barnes' children came into the backyard and begged the men to stop.
Fisher and Barnes were at one point very good friends, the Grizzlies player told the media. They were teammates for two years when they played for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Govan is a former cast member of the VH1 reality show, Basketball Wives: L.A. There's no information on how long she and Fisher have been dating.
The NBA is currently investigating the incident.

Uncle Luke - informing us about heavily promiscuous women since '85. During his exclusive interview with us, Mr. Campbell discusses the decline in wholesome women and the rise of rappers "wifing" and ultimately marrying "h*es." "Most traditional hip-hop artists, we wife or we get married to real, good women," Luke explains. "We don't normally marry or wife h*es, we pass them off to the R&B cats - those the ones that be wifin' h*es."
A few weeks back Uncle Luke claimed "before Kanye West, rappers wasn't wifin' all these h*es." During our talk with him, the "I Wanna Rock" vocalist partially retracts his statement and outright says he doesn't "think Kim Kardashian is a h*e," more so because he doesn't consider adult film actresses or dancers to be in that category.
Uncle Luke goes on to describe what a h*e actually is, why men can be them, too, and what a person of that nature will always end up doing. "She always gon' try to upgrade...You'll take a h*e to a party and the first thing you'll notice [is] her eyes will be moving round the room, especially if she's in the room with some other guys whose status is higher than yours," Luke believes - and with his background and past encounters with said women, his statement may not be that far-fetched.
Press play to find out why Uncle Luke feels being with Kim "would actually enhance [Kanye's] chance of winning" the 2020 presidential election, and how nowadays, "everybody wants a photo-op so they can get more followers," below.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The deadly shooting last week at an Oregon community college has an eerie parallel with the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School that killed 20 pupils and six adult staff members in 2012.
Like Adam Lanza, the gunman in the Connecticut massacre, Christopher Harper-Mercer was living a mostly solitary life with a mom who shared his fascination with firearms.
Both stories illustrate the struggles parents face caring for a deeply troubled child, struggles that can inadvertently lead to a volatile outcome made easier by ready access to weaponry.
Adam Lamza
"When you begin to bring guns into the home environment where you have that dangerous cocktail of behavior, that's pretty unbelievable," said Mary Ellen O'Toole, a former FBI profiler who directs George Mason University's forensic science program.
Harper-Mercer bears similarities to other school shooters: a young male focused on mass lethality and carrying out the killings in a military-like mission destined to end in the killer's own death, O'Toole said.
He was a loner in his 20s like James Holmes, who killed 12 people in a cinema in Aurora, Colorado, in 2012; Jared Loughner, who seriously wounded Rep. Gabby Giffords and killed six in Tucson, Arizona, in 2011; and Elliot Rodger, who killed six people near the University of California, Santa Barbara, campus last year.
Chris Harper-Mercer (left) and Elliot Rodger
Like Rodger, he left behind a note that complained about not having a girlfriend.
But the comparison to Lanza extends to the relationships both shooters had with their mothers and guns.
Both women were long-time gun enthusiasts, not uncommon in many parts of America where gun ownership is prevalent and encouraged. The two mothers amassed weapons and took their sons to shooting ranges, according to the investigation into the Sandy Hook shooting and the Daily Breeze newspaper in Torrance, California, where Harper lived for years with her son.
It's easy to judge them in hindsight, but deeply strained and complicated relationships often lead to bad or desperate parental decisions with tragic consequences, said psychologist Peter Langman, author of two books on school shooters. Many troubled young people are so impaired they're incapable of living on their own.
"In some cases, (parents) don't recognize there's a problem," Langman said. "In other cases, they're aware of their child's mental health issues, but they don't see any evidence of violence, so they don't see any reason not to take their kid target shooting."
Parents may also use guns to bond with a mentally troubled, isolated child who is obsessed with weapons and violence, he said.
Laurel Harper's online postings don't indicate she knew her son had violent tendencies, but it is clear she relished her weapons.
Investigators found eight guns in the apartment she shared with her son near the North Umpqua River and another six at the school where he killed eight students and a professor before killing himself last week.
She wrote enthusiastically about assault rifles and pistols and derided gun-control efforts in "lame states" on Yahoo! Answers using an account that is linked to an email address associated with her.
"I keep two full mags in my Glock case," she wrote in a three-year-old posting. "No one will be 'dropping' by my house uninvited."
Harper could not be located for comment and has not returned messages left by The Associated Press at her home.
The nurse, who moved to rural Oregon with her son from the Los Angeles area two years ago, speaks frankly in the postings about her son's Asperger's syndrome, a mild form of autism. Experts say that people diagnosed with Asperger's are not more prone to violence than anyone else.
Investigators said the mother has told them he had mental health issues, but have not released details.
Social profiles linked to her son suggested he tracked other mass shootings and was fascinated by the Irish Republican Army. Neighbors in the Los Angeles-area suburb of Torrance, where the mother and son lived before moving to Oregon, recalled him as uncommunicative, having child-like tantrums and loud fights with his mother, who was overprotective of him.
Adam Lanza's mother Nancy Lanza also struggled with her son, who had developmental issues from early childhood, according to a report released last November by the Connecticut Office of the Child Advocate.
The report said Lanza's mother, like Harper-Mercer's, was doting. She attempted to eliminate disruptions to Adam Lanza's life "entirely through hypervigilance and management of his symptoms." In emails to her son, she wrote she loved him and wanted him to be happy, according to the report.
But Nancy Lanza isolated her son from the world. And while she sought some treatment for him, she rejected other help and was in denial about her son's illness. The teen became increasingly preoccupied with mass murder and engaged in a cyber-community of mass murder enthusiasts. Before the shooting, he lived in virtual social isolation, spent months in his bedroom with the windows blacked out, and communicated with his mother only through email.
The report says access to assault weapons with high capacity magazines "did play a major role" in the Sandy Hook massacre, alongside inadequate and uncoordinated mental health services and Adam Lanza's extreme preoccupation with violence. His mother, it notes, "seemed unaware of any potential detrimental impact of providing unfettered access to firearms."
While most young men who commit mass shootings show evidence of mental problems, the vast majority of mentally ill people aren't violent.
Liza Long, an instructor at the College of Western Idaho, understands what Harper was up against. Her then-13-year-old son, who suffered from mental illness, pulled a knife on her and threatened to kill her and himself.
Long said services for severely mentally troubled children are inadequate, and insurance carriers often won't pay them. Before getting diagnosed and treated for bipolar disorder, her son was misdiagnosed multiple times and she struggled to find residential treatment for him.
"From a mom's perspective, we end up living in shame and silence," said Long, who wrote a book about her experiences. "You're basically hiding, because you're isolated."
Police have not announced a motive for Harper-Mercer's deadly rampage. That is likely to be based on what they recovered from the note he left behind and what his mother has revealed.
Investigators in the Sandy Hook shooting were never sure what drove Adam Lanza to kill. He destroyed his computer and his mother was his first victim.
