On February 14, 2013 South African track star Oscar Pistorius, 28, shot and killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. He told police and subsequently a jury that he mistook her for a burglar.

On October 21, 2014, he was convicted of culpable homicide -- killing her unintentionally but unlawfully. He was sentenced to a maximum of five years and a concurrent three-year suspended prison sentence for a separate reckless endangerment conviction.
Now just 10 months later, the man known as "The Bladerunner" for the J-shaped carbon-fibre prosthetics he used to run on his amputated legs in the 2012 Summer Olympics, will be released to a halfway house on Friday, August 21, 2015.
The South African state legal team has filed an appeal, objecting to the original verdict.
The AFP News Agency interviewed South African citizens about Pistorius' pending release, all were dismayed at his light sentence.
"It comes across as justice not being served or that this is rich man's justice," said Charles Leonard, News editor of the Guardian and Mail. "That a rich person can get out much quicker, much easier."
"I don't think it's right. I think he deserves to stay in prison because what he did was murder," said high school student Cara Lethbridge. "The fact that he's being let loose so soon is not fair.
