Video After The Jump
50 Cent was in Austin on Tuesday, March 11, to perform at the SXSW Music Festival. Prior to taking the stage he sat down with Fuse's Brandi Cyrus to talk about his forthcoming album entitled Animal Ambition.
How did you come up with the name for the record?
My albums have...the ones that stood out to me have had a prosperity theme. Like Power of a Dollar or Get Rich or Die Tryin. This one's about prosperity, but it's about the effects.
Can we expect any collaborations or features on the record?
Shout out to Trey Songz. Me and Trey Songz worked together on the Smoke record. It's actually produced by Dr. Dre. I worked with Prodigy. I really don't wanna give everything up (laughs).
You recently put out a song called Funeral and a video for it. Can you talk about the story behind the song and the video?
Funeral was me being inspired by things that, when I fell in love with hip hop it was different elements involved in the actual writing. The story telling process was really big at that point. It's gone because it's been replaced with riddles and little punchlines. For me to bring that element back is exciting. You're gonna see a lot of artists follow and doing it because it feels like a short film when the video follows the narrative and the music.
As far as soundwise can we expect the record to sound a lot like Funeral? Is that a first taste of it, or is it all going to be different?
It does have the harder drums on the project throughout it. It's just my musical choice. I always like for the record...I gotta feel like it's gonna help me run in the gym. That energy connected to it. I want that to be in there. I think overall the project will be something that a lot of people enjoy.
You're completely independent. You left Interscope. Talk about what that feels like to be able to do literally whatever you want with your music.
It's not a big adjustment for me. A lot of guys that anticipate, or have had their dream of being so big they'll commit to the majors. They're just like, 'Let me just do the deal and get this.' Before they know it the advance is gone (laughs).
Animal Ambition will arrive in stores June 3rd. Follow 50 Cent on Twitter, Hang/w, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
