The National -- A Sydney man has been charged for punching and stomping on a heavily pregnant Muslim woman unprovoked, in what was described as an "Islamophobic" attack by a leading Australian Islamic association.
The man "verbalized his hatred of Muslims prior to hitting me", according to a statement issued by the victim in which she called for all Australians to voice solidarity against religious or racial attacks.
"I have experienced occurrences of verbal abuse and hate from other Australians in the past but I have never thought that physical abuse of this nature could happen to me," Rana Haidar said in a statement shared on Twitter by the Australasian Muslim Times, a community newspaper.
Shocking security camera footage showed the man approaching a table of three women wearing headscarves as they chatted at a cafe in the western Sydney suburb of Parramatta on Wednesday.
Seemingly without provocation, the 43-year-old suspect is seen lunging over the table to attack the 31-year-old woman, who police said is 38 weeks pregnant.
After several frenzied punches, the woman falls to the ground and the assailant stamps on her before being wrestled away by bystanders.
Police said a suspect has been charged with "assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray" and denied bail, while the woman was taken to hospital and discharged. They declined to comment on the attacker's motives, but left open the possibility of additional charges being laid against him.
Rateb Jneid, president of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, said: "This was clearly a racist and Islamophobic attack and we expect it to be treated as such."
Police did not identify the victim or the attacker, but local press gave the man's name as Stipe Lozina.
Ms Haider, who said she was born and raised in Sydney, thanked the people who came to her assistance. "I want to see a world where people defend one another against cowardly acts like this and band together to protect the victims. We cannot allow behavior like this to become the norm and sit silent," she wrote.
"If it were not for the brave actions of these members of the community in stopping the assault the victim may very well have sustained much more serious injuries," said police inspector Luke Sywenkyj.
The attack came just days after a report by researchers at Charles Sturt University found Islamophobia in Australia was "a continuous phenomenon" and women wearing a headscarf are especially at risk.
Of 113 female victims who reported being physically intimidated or harassed, researchers found 96 per cent were wearing a headscarf.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG) — Famous TV judge Joe Brown is on the hot seat after statements he made about Harriet Tubman, but the judge is making no apologies for what he said.
Judge Brown upset many people when he was discussing the picture of abolitionist Tubman being placed on the $20 bill on a radio show.
"You've got nothing but male whites on the currency with one exception," Brown told WREG. "You've got Susan B. Anthony on a silver dollar, so you've got all white men, one white woman, so what do you do? Do you put a black man on there like Thurgood Marshall or Fredrick Douglas or Martin Luther King, one of the only three people the United States has named a holiday after? No. You take a foot soldier, and the foot soldier was a brave lady, but she did not die in the battle."
Brown is back in the national spotlight not for his unorthodox courtroom antics or his TV show but for controversial statements he made about Tubman on the $20 bill.
"You assess the value to an ethnic group or to a race, and this is ancient history on the status of the men," he said.
Tubman, an American icon, was born a slave and escaped to her freedom, making 13 trips back to free other slaves using a network of safe houses called the Underground Railroad. Her life story is being told in theaters now in the movie "Harriet." Brown said the film is also part of the ploy, and he knows from his days in Hollywood that feminists are behind it.
"I was privy to many debates out there where what I call 'feministas' decided that we hate straight black men with a passion," Brown said. "We want to dis them. I'm paraphrasing them, but they were actually saying this. We need a woman at any cost on a currency, so lets pick a historical black female so the liberals can't attack it, the black men can't attack it, and everybody will push it, and oh by the way whoever we pick, let's do a movie to push this woman."
Brown said if any single black person deserves the honor, it's Frederick Douglass, who's credited with starting the abolitionist movement.
"You dis him totally," Brown said. "You see, you've never done a movie about him. What you do is you pick one of our foot soldiers and say, 'The hell with the greats we've got out there.'"

TMZ -- A Lyft driver pulled a female passenger out of his car, and allegedly started to attack her -- kicking off a chain reaction of fights with concerned passersby.
TMZ got a hold of this WILD surveillance video recorded Tuesday afternoon in L.A., and it starts with the car -- which has the Lyft emblem in the back window -- parked curbside along busy Melrose Avenue. Then the male driver hops out, and pulls a young woman from the seat behind him and starts dragging her out of the vehicle while tossing her stuff out at the same time.
The woman, actress Alessandra Starr Ward, tells TMZ the whole thing started when she started playing a song called "Te Bote" from her phone. The driver demanded she turn it off, she refused, and they started arguing. He allegedly threatened to boot her from the car, and she told him she'd call police if he did.
In the clip, you can see Alessandra fighting back, but the driver pushed her down and knocked her over. Drivers in other cars saw it unfolding and a few guys stopped to help.
That's when it really hit the fan ... several guys teamed up on the Lyft driver, who continued fighting back, and in the scuffle ... Alessandra got knocked down again. It took one guy putting the Lyft driver in a chokehold to finally calm things down.
We're told nearby police officers were flagged down, and cited the Lyft driver for misdemeanor battery. As for Alessandra, she says she went to the hospital and was diagnosed with a concussion. She also says she has bruises all over her body, a sprained ankle and a black eye.
She tells us Lyft needs to vet its drivers, as this shouldn't happen to anyone. It's unclear if she plans to pursue legal action against the rideshare company.

Floyd Mayweather has gotten the itch to fight again.
The 42-year old future boxing Hall of Famer announced via a pair of Instagram posts that he will be coming out of retirement next year.
"@danawhite and I working together again to bring the world another spectacular event in 2020," Money May captioned a photo of him sitting next to UFC President Dana White. He added the hashtags #boxing #ufc #mma and #mayweatherpromotions.
"Coming out of retirement in 2020," Mayweather wrote in a 2nd post.
Mayweather's last professional boxing match took place on August 26, 2017, against UFC superstar Conor McGregor. A fight he won via 10th round TKO.
The boxer's current record stands at 50-0.
The only question is whether Mayweather will be fighting in a boxing ring or an octagon. Thoughts?
