The death of a Connecticut woman while on a date with a man she met online was caused by drugs & alcohol & has been ruled an accident, the state chief medical examiner’s office said.

The family of the 23-year-old woman, Lauren Smith-Fields, had complained authorities were not giving the investigation enough attention because she was Black.

Bridgeport police said Tuesday that its narcotics & vice division, with help from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, is investigating to see if any crimes were committed & if anyone should be charged.

“We are now refocusing our attention & efforts to the factors that (led) to her untimely death,” acting Police Chief Rebeca Garcia said.

Smith-Fields died Dec. 12 from “acute intoxication due to the combined effects of fentanyl, promethazine, hydroxyzine & alcohol” & her death was accidental, the medical examiner’s office said Monday. Fentanyl is a powerful opioid. Promethazine and hydroxyzine are antihistamines used to treat allergies.

She was found in her Bridgeport apartment after the man she was with called police to say he awoke to find her unresponsive.

Smith-Field’s family said police never notified them of her death, which they learned about more than a day later through a note left on her apartment door by her landlord. A detective eventually asked them to stop calling, they said. The family’s attorney, Darnell Crosland, has notified the city of his intent to file a lawsuit accusing police of failing to properly investigate.

“The police department has been racially insensitive to this family & has treated this family with no respect & has violated their civil rights,” Crosland wrote.

Crosland posted a statement on Twitter late Monday questioning the medical examiner’s finding that Smith-Fields’ death was an accident.

Lamar Odom will now have Kobe & Gigi Bryant with him everywhere he goes -- the ex-Lakers star was just gifted an incredible piece honoring the late NBA legend & his daughter on the second anniversary of their tragic helicopter accident.

TMZ Sports has learned ... LO -- who played alongside Kobe from 2004-2011 & remained close friends with the Hall of Famer in retirement -- received the special tribute to the Mamba & Mambacita from his manager, Tonita B.

The finished product is a diamond chain & pendant featuring Kobe kissing Gigi on the head ... which was based off a famous picture of the two sitting courtside at a Laker game in 2019.

We're told the chain -- designed by Scoobie Da Jeweler -- is made of 25 carats of VS diamonds & the whole finished product is worth around $17,000.

The back of the piece features a special quote from Kobe ... which reads, "Rest at the end, not in the middle."

We're told this all came to be when Tonita decided to do something unique for Lamar to commemorate their new Savvy Talent Management Group partnership & given his admiration for Bryant & his family, she chose a Mamba-related keepsake.

Odom has previously spoken about the impact Kobe left on his life after the fatal accident on Jan. 26, 2020 ... saying he not only helped him on the court, but was by his side during his darkest times.

Odom posted about his new gift on social media minutes ago ... saying, "To understand that Kobe meant the world to me and have this made as a constant reminder for me to keep going has me at loss for words."

WASHINGTON (AP) — Liberal Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer is retiring, giving President Joe Biden an opening he has pledged to fill by naming the first Black woman to the high court.

Breyer, 83, has been a pragmatic force on a court that has grown increasingly conservative in recent years, trying to forge majorities with more moderate justices right & left of center.

Breyer has been a justice since 1994, appointed by President Bill Clinton. Along with the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Breyer opted not to step down the last time the Democrats controlled the White House & the Senate during Barack Obama’s presidency. Ginsburg died in September 2020 & then-President Donald Trump filled the vacancy with a conservative justice, Amy Coney Barrett.

Breyer’s departure, expected over the summer, won’t change the 6-3 conservative advantage on the court because his replacement will be nominated by Biden & almost certainly confirmed by a Senate where Democrats have the slimmest majority.

Among the names being circulated as potential nominees are California Supreme Court Justice Leondra Kruger, U.S. Circuit Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, prominent civil rights lawyer Sherrilyn Ifill & U.S. District Judge Michelle Childs.

Biden has been focused on filling federal judicial nominations with a more diverse group of judges & the Supreme Court has not been top of mind during his first year in office. A decision on a nominee has not been made yet, & is expected to take a few weeks. But Biden has expanded his pool of applicants by naming more Black women to the bench.

If you ever watched Kobe Bryant play basketball you knew he was a notch above most others. Unstoppable of offense, tenacious on defense and clutch when it came time to drain a big shot at the end of the game.

It's impossible to think of the Los Angeles Lakers and not picture the Black Mamba.

Today, we remember the basketball legend who died tragically two years ago in a helicopter crash, along with his 13-year old basketball prodigy daughter Gianna "GiGi" Bryant; John and Keri Altobelli, and their daughter, Alyssa; Sarah and Payton Chester; Christina Mauser; and Ara Zoboyan.

Vanessa Bryant, continues to carry on her husband's legacy through various business ventures, while taking care of their daughters Natalia, Bianka and Capri.

Rest in peace Kobe and GiGi, and God bless the Bryant family.

One half of the hip-hop duo Rae Sremmurd is behind bars, after allegedly attacking the mother of his child, knocking down a door and pulling her hair extensions out in the process.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ Slim Jxmmi was arrested Tuesday morning in Miami for battery. Slim's girlfriend -- with whom he also shares a son -- told cops the rapper first got pissed after she had questioned him about a woman he was following on Twitter.

Cops say the GF told them Slim left their home with a friend shortly after the Twitter argument, and returned a short time later smelling like alcohol. The alleged victim told cops when she attempted to move their sleeping child from his playpen to a bed, Slim pulled her hair so hard her extension was ripped from her scalp.

We're told Slim's GF told cops she tried to record his outrage with her phone -- which made him more pissed -- and he chased her around their home.

At one point, the alleged victim told cops she ran to a room and closed the door, but Slim kicked the door down, ripped the phone away, and threw it over a balcony to prevent her from posting the video on social media.

Cops say they recovered the phone, undamaged, on a nearby street when they were called to the scene.

Detlef Schrempf did not mince words over fellow NBA All-Star John Stockton’s wild COVID-19 takes.

Stockton, arguably Gonzaga’s most famous alum, had his season tickets for home basketball games suspended over his refusal to comply with the university’s mask mandate.

Schrempf quote tweeted an article from the Spokesman-Review that discussed Stockton’s history of nonfactual COVID-19 claims and Gonzaga’s ticket suspension decision.

In his post, he wrote, “Bat s–t crazy. I am so disappointed we have so many role models not up to the task. This is not helping!”

Stockton — who holds the NBA’s all-time steals and assists records — is one of just two players whose number was retired by Gonzaga. He described the conversation between him and Gonzaga Athletic Director Chris Standiford to discuss the matter “congenial” but also “not pleasant.”

“Basically, it came down to, they were asking me to wear a mask to the games and being a public figure, someone a little bit more visible, I stuck out in the crowd a little bit,” Stockton said to the Spokesman-Review. “And therefore they received complaints and felt like from whatever the higher-ups — those weren’t discussed, but from whatever it was higher up — they were going to have to either ask me to wear a mask or they were going to suspend my tickets.”

Stockton has publicly opposed mask mandates, shutdowns and vaccines, and has peddled conspiracy theories relating to COVID-19, none of which have had any scientific backing. In June, he appeared a documentary titled “COVID and the Vaccine: Truth, Lies and Misconceptions Revealed.”

In his interview with the Spokesman-Review, Stockton baselessly claimed that around 150 professional athletes have died because of the COVID-19 vaccine and that millions have died from vaccines worldwide.

“I think it’s highly recorded now, there’s 150 I believe now, it’s over 100 professional athletes dead — professional athletes — the prime of their life, dropping dead that are vaccinated, right on the pitch, right on the field, right on the court,” Stockton said during the interview.

These comments, which were slammed by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in a CNN interview as “not based on reality or facts,” have not been scientifically backed by medical professionals.

“I think statements like that make the public look upon athletes basically as dumb jocks, for trying to explain away something that is obviously a pandemic,” Abdul-Jabbar said.

The United States is discussing the deployment of American military forces to Eastern Europe with its NATO allies, a senior administration official said Monday, as President Joe Biden weighs options for responding to Russian threats against Ukraine.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has placed 8,500 troops on “heightened alert” to assist with the defense of NATO allies, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said during a news briefing Monday. He said no deployment orders have been given.

"I want to reinforce that as of now, the decision has been made to put these units on higher alert and higher alert only," said Kirby. "No decisions have been made to deploy forces from the United States at this time."

With Moscow massing more than 100,000 troops at its neighbor's border and no diplomatic breakthrough in sight, the West is stepping up its response amid mounting fears an invasion could be imminent.

Conversations are underway with NATO countries that could receive U.S. military forces as part of a plan to deter Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aggression, the official said.

NATO said Monday that it was sending ships and fighter jets to Eastern Europe and that Washington “has also made clear that it is considering increasing its military presence in the eastern part of the Alliance.”

Biden participated in a roughly 90-minute video conference with European leaders Monday afternoon to discuss Russia’s military buildup on Ukraine’s borders, the White House said. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Polish President Andrzej Duda, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi and other leaders participated in the call.

Following the video conference, Biden told reporters it was a "very, very, very good meeting," adding that there was "total unanimity with all the European leaders." The president said he would have more to say on the issue later.

In a statement, the White House said Biden and European leaders "reiterated their continued concern about the Russian military build-up on Ukraine’s borders and expressed their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity."

The White House said the leaders "underscored their shared desire for a diplomatic resolution" and also discussed "their joint efforts to deter further Russian aggression against Ukraine."

Biden was briefed by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Saturday about U.S. options for responding if Russia invades Ukraine, as well as options for U.S. military movements in advance of an invasion, according to a defense official and a senior administration official.

Among the options presented for the U.S. military in advance of an invasion were bomber flights over the region, ship visits into the Black Sea and the moving of troops and some equipment from other parts of Europe into Poland, Romania and other countries neighboring Ukraine.

Cardi B claimed a blogger made up harmful lies about her on the internet is ringing true with the jury ... which just sided with her in federal court.

The rapper won her libel case against Tasha K, who she sued for posting videos where she alleged, among other things, CB was a prostitute who dabbled in drugs and had contracted STIs.

After a week-plus long trial, Tasha was found liable on 3 separate claims, and ordered to pay Cardi $1.25 million in general damages and $250k for medical expenses.

Cardi called BS on Tasha, suing her back in 2019 when the blogger refused to take down the damaging posts.

CB even went on the witness stand during the trial and testified she was suicidal during this period as a direct result of Tasha's stories.

Looks like she made an impact with jurors -- she and her attorneys, Lisa Moore, Sarah Matz and William Pequignot scored a big W, and can close the book on this mess, for now.

The judge said any potential punitive damages Tasha might owe Cardi will be determined in a future hearing.

Four attorneys general are suing Google for allegedly misleading users about when the company was able to track their location.

The bipartisan group of attorneys general from the District of Columbia, Indiana, Texas and Washington allege in separate lawsuits filed Monday that Google deceived users from at least 2014 to 2019 by leading them to believe that turning off “location history” settings would make the service stop tracking their whereabouts. But, the AGs allege, a user’s location could still be tracked by Google unless they also turned off settings in the “Web & App Activity” section.

Google describes Web & App Activity as a way to personalize experiences for users by saving searches and activity in a user’s account.

The AGs allege that Google misled users to believe that once they turned their location history off, their whereabouts would no longer be tracked.

“Yet, even when consumers explicitly opted out of location tracking by turning ‘location history’ off, Google nevertheless recorded consumers’ locations via other means,” the Washington lawsuit alleges. “Although Web & App Activity setting is automatically enabled for all Google accounts, the company’s disclosures during ‘Google Account’ creation did not mention or draw consumers’ attention to the setting until 2018,” the suit charges.

A 2018 report from the Associated Press revealed the basis of the allegations in the lawsuits.

Arizona’s attorney general brought a similar lawsuit in 2020, but D.C. AG Karl Racine said in an interview with CNBC Monday the new lawsuits are distinct in part because they include a focus on so-called dark patterns, which are design choices websites use to steer users toward a certain decision. The lawsuit said that examples of dark patterns “include complicated navigation menus, visual misdirection, confusing wording (such as double negatives), and repeated nudging.”

Racine said it was important to include dark patterns in the complaint “because it shows the level of deception and the level of intention that many companies including Google, engage in to essentially trap the user limit the user’s ability to keep certain areas of their life private. And they do it all the while telling the user in their policy statements, that the user is in control of how the system their system operates. That couldn’t be farther from the truth.”

The AGs allege that Google profited from the deception by fueling its advertising business with such data. The lawsuits specifically request the court to require Google to offload any algorithms created with the allegedly ill-gotten gains, alongside monetary profits.

The request for algorithms to be included in the prayer for relief is relatively unique, but Racine said it was an important one to deter other companies from pursuing similar types of alleged deception.

“If you have gotten access to a whole body of information that you clearly have programmed and made an algorithm to profit from, I would suggest that that is ascertainable information,” Racine said. “And therefore, we should figure out how much money Google has made using, in this case, D.C. user data on geolocation. Because we’d like to have that money back.”

“The attorneys general are bringing a case based on inaccurate claims and outdated assertions about our settings,” Google spokesperson José Castañeda said in a statement. “We have always built privacy features into our products and provided robust controls for location data. We will vigorously defend ourselves and set the record straight.”

Castañeda added that the Alphabet-owned search giant has updated the way it stores and communicates to users about location settings, including by letting users automatically delete location data on a regular basis beginning in June 2019. In June 2020, it made auto-delete the default for new accounts. The company also has made changes to limit the way it collects location data when users search on Google, to collect the general area a user is searching from rather than a precise location.

Google also pointed to comments a judge in a similar case brought by Arizona’s attorney general made. The comments came in response to a motion for summary judgement, where the judge declined to rule on a claim in the case before it made its way to trial.

“A reasonable fact-finder could find that a reasonable, or even an unsophisticated, consumer, would understand that at least some location information is collected through means other than [‘location history’],” the judge wrote in the recent filing.

Video After The Jump

A lone gunman has killed one person and seriously injured three others inside a lecture hall at Heidelberg University, before shooting himself dead.

German police said the shooter had used a "long gun", and fired shots around the amphitheatre "wildly".

The bloodshed triggered a large operation at the university's campus in the Neuenheimer Feld area.

Police asked people to avoid the area so rescue workers and emergency services could move around freely.

German media reported that the gunman appeared to have no religious or political motive.

Heidelberg is a university town in the southwest of Germany, with about 160,000 inhabitants.

The country has some of the strictest gun laws in Europe, and school shootings are rare. Anyone under 25 is required to pass a psychological evaluation before getting a gun license.

German newspaper Bild reported that the shooter was a student at the university.

Police initially said four victims had been wounded, with a later update confirming one had died in hospital.
