The Taliban in Afghanistan are parading an American hostage in front of cameras and celebrating the capture.
“Allah gave victory to the mujahideen!” one of the fighters exclaims. “Down with them, down with their spies!”
The prisoner is a Belgian Malinois.canine. The Taliban claim it is a military colonel. This particular breed is a favorite of the U.S. military. They can be trained to sniff out explosives and drugs. They are also trained to parachute and rappel with their handlers.
Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, told the Washington Post the canine was captured after a firefight with American soldiers.
“The mujahideen valorously put tough resistance against the troops for hours. The dog was of high significance to the Americans."
According to Mujahid, the dog was wearing sophisticated electronic devices.
The Search for International Terrorist Entities (SITE) Intelligence Group tracks the online activity of terrorist organizations. They found the Taliban footage on a Twitter account used for propaganda. SITE's founder, Rita Katz, said she's never seen anything like it.
“I don’t remember seeing a dog used as a hostage."
