In the midst of Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s successful return to boxing, there appeared to be a WWE moment.
As Mayweather celebrated with his team, WBA super champion ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley entered the ring and participated in what was perceived by some as a potentially scripted argument.
Blows were nearly thrown. A near breakout in the ring. The kind of thing that could really build up hype for a future fight.
Did it all mean that a date between Sugar and ‘Money’ is what’s next on the schedule, undoubtedly something that would disappoint the boxing fans who are foaming at the mouth to see him take on Manny Pacquiao?
Not necessarily.
It actually appears that Mayweather was simply reacting to what he saw as Mosley stepping in on a moment that clearly belonged to him.
“I just said that when it’s Shane Mosley’s time to shine, when I support them and go watch them fight, I don’t get in the ring and grab the mic,” Mayweather said. “I let it be their night.
“Tonight is not Mosley night. Mosley is supposed to be at training camp. Mosley don’t need to worry about what I’m doing.”
While it is true that Mosley is likely to fight Josh Clottey this December, it wasn’t long ago that the welterweight champion was openly campaigning to be Pacquiao’s next opponent.
The fact is, Mosley has had trouble landing the mega-deal that a fighter of his caliber usually lands, and his actions Saturday night were indicative of that.
“It wasn’t scripted. I just walked to the ring and asked the promoters if I could enter,” said Mosley of his sudden appearance after Mayweather’s win over Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. “I am hoping that the best will fight the best. That’s what the sport of boxing needs.
“I’m the No. 1 welterweight champion right now. Nobody can dispute that. So why not fight me?”
Mayweather’s manager and close friend, Leonard Ellerbe, said he was caught off guard by Mosley’s entrance into the ring.
Although he didn’t want to comment too much on it, Ellerbe said he thought it wasn’t a smart move.
“It’s like this, when you’re desperate, you’ll do anything,” Ellerbe said. “That was a coward, desperate move on his part. He goes about things the wrong way. If you’re looking to make a fight with Floyd, trying to go up there and upstage him? That (expletive) never going to work.”
To understand the reasons behind the scripted feel of what happened Saturday regarding Mosley, it’s important to remember that he is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions.
Before Mayweather reached the post-fight press conference, Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya's still-unpolished promoting skills made it obvious that the Mosley-Mayweather matchup is the one Golden Boy is looking for.
“Mayweather proved he’s back and he’s bigger and better than ever, so what fight do people want to watch next?” De La Hoya said. “Who do they want to see? Mosley has a strong case, let me tell you.
“Mosley and Floyd are in the position to be part of history and create the mega-fight — the Super Bowl of all fights. Those are the two best fighters on the planet now.”
Now there are some, many really, who would use the same description for a potential matchup between Mayweather and Pacquiao.
When asked which fighter would carry the most promotional value as Mayweather’s next opponent, Ellerbe did not seem to think it was Mosley — at all.
“I would think it’s the winner of that fight in November,” said Ellerbe, referring to a Nov. 21 fight between Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto. “Clearly, attraction-wise, it’s not Shane Mosley.
“I don’t know what it is, because Mosley is a very good, likable fighter. He just doesn’t have the ability to connect to the fans. The only way you can make the sport bigger is to attract younger fans to the sport and we are looking for creative ways to do that.”
It’s these kinds of tidbits that point more towards the potential Mayweather opponent everyone is hoping for.
And although it wasn’t seen via live Pay-Per-View telecast like the Mosley confrontation was, the Pacquiao camp gave its own way of calling Mayweather out.
Shortly after Mayweather’s hand was raised, Pacquiao’s head trainer Freddie Roach delivered a message to media members through his public relations team.
“Floyd, congratulations on beating the best lightweight in the world,” Roach’s statement said, taking a dig at Mayweather’s decision to face a fighter that had to move up in weight class.
According to Mayweather and Ellerbe, people just needs to calm down.
Everyone, from fans who are desperately hoping for a matchup between the current and former pound-for-pound champions to 38-year-old welterweight champions hoping for the big-name opponent, will get what they want.
Sooner or later, they say, Mayweather will get around to beating every good fighter out there.
“When all is said and done, he’ll fight them all,” Ellerbe said. “It’s like the old saying, ‘He beat this guy, but what about this guy?’
“He’ll fight them all, one by one, in whatever order they come in. We will fight the best guys out there.”

HBO's "The Wire" was a drama series set in Baltimore Maryland and based on true events. The Sundance Channel's new docu-series "Brick City" features actual people in the city of Newark, New Jersey. Created and directed by the award-winning filmmakers Mark Benjamin and Marc Levin, “Brick City” is a five-part documentary series that captures the daily drama of a community striving to become a better, safer, stronger place to live since the city's 1967 riots.
The struggle to bring Newark to a place free of violence, poverty and corruption has been a long one. "Brick City" tells this story through many perspectives, one of them being the city's current mayor Cory A. Booker. Mayor Booker is no stranger to the cameras.
His 2002 mayoral run for office pitted him up against five term incumbent mayor Sharpe James. The campaign was chronicled in the documentary “Street Fight,” which was nominated for an Academy Award. Booker finally took office in 2006 amidst assassination plots by the Bloods and has since then been governing the city and managing its high homicide rate has been a nonstop battle.
Acclaimed actor Forest Whitaker is the docu-series' executive producer. Rapper Khari Mateen has also contributed to the project with the song "Brick By Brick," featuring Dice Raw.
"Brick City" premieres Monday at 10 p.m. EDT on Sundance Channel and airs every night through Friday.

A lethal-injection team tried for about two hours to find a usable vein, then gave up. Romell Broom, a convicted rapist-murderer, says another try would be unconstitutional.

As executioners poked his limbs with an IV needle, Romell Broom initially tried to speed along his own demise, flexing his arm and tugging on a rubber tourniquet to better expose a vein on the inside of his elbow.
But as prison workers repeatedly failed to find a vein strong enough to take the lethal injections, the convicted rapist-murderer began to despair over his protracted end. Witnesses and the execution-team log from Tuesday describe how the 53-year-old winced and cried as a shunt inserted in his leg also failed to open a pathway for the fatal drugs.
Two hours and 23 minutes after it started, Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland halted the execution and scheduled a second attempt for a week later.
The aborted execution has renewed concerns about lethal injection, and raises the question of whether a second execution attempt would violate the 8th Amendment prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment.
Bessye Middleton holds a painting of her daughter, Tryna, who was raped and fatally stabbed by Romell Broom on Sept. 21, 1984. The 14-year-old was walking home after a football game.
On Friday, one of Broom's attorneys filed lawsuits in state and federal court alleging that another execution attempt would violate Broom's civil rights. U.S. District Judge Gregory L. Frost issued a temporary restraining order putting off the attempt for at least 10 days. The attorney, Tim Sweeney, also appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court to review the case.
Only once before has a state's execution failed, legal scholars say. In 1946, 17-year-old Willie Francis walked away from Louisiana's "Gruesome Gertie" electric chair after a 2,500-volt current coursed through his body.
"The issue with Willie Francis was, can you re-execute him, or would that be cruel and unusual punishment or double jeopardy?" said Deborah Denno, a Fordham University law professor and death penalty expert.
A divided high court decided in 1947 that Louisiana could lawfully subject Francis to execution again. A second electrocution killed him a year and three days after the first attempt.
"But so many aspects of that case are so outdated or so specific to Willie Francis and that time that even though it is entrenched precedent with the U.S. Supreme Court and frequently cited, one would look at the Broom case very differently," said Denno, whose writings on execution methods were cited by the U.S. Supreme Court majority in last year's decision upholding the constitutionality of lethal injection in Kentucky.
"I think we're in a new day in our treatment of human beings," said Richard Dieter, executive director of the nonprofit Death Penalty Information Center.
"To subject someone to being at the brink of death, then yank them back because the state couldn't carry out its own procedures . . . suggests the whole lethal injection process is in need of further review," said Dieter, who has expressed views against capital punishment.
The Supreme Court took what some analysts saw as a narrow look at lethal injection in the Kentucky case, Baze vs. Rees. The state had carried out only one other execution in recent years and, as in the Francis decision, the court found no pattern of flaws with methods.
Other states held off on executions until the justices in April 2008 ruled lethal injection a humane means of execution if carried out correctly.
All 35 states that allow the death penalty use a similar -- though not identical -- three-drug process. It is often administered by corrections officers rather than doctors because the American Medical Assn. advises against physician participation in executions.
Death penalty opponents say the Broom incident should at least compel Ohio to impose a moratorium on executions and review the procedures.
"Ohio has a history here. It's not just him. He's the third guy in three years where we've had essentially variations on the same problem," said Jeff Gamso, volunteer attorney and former legal director for the ACLU of Ohio. He was referring to the executions of Joseph Clark in 2006 and Christopher Newton in 2007 in which prison workers took more than an hour and two hours, respectively, to kill the inmates because of trouble locating veins.
Some legal scholars said they expected little legal consequence from the Ohio incident.
"This certainly put someone through anxiety and stress, but whether that rises to cruel and unusual punishment -- I doubt the Supreme Court at the end of the day would agree with that," said John Eastman, dean of the Chapman University School of Law in Orange
Robert Weisberg, a Stanford University law professor and director of the Stanford Criminal Justice Center, said public opinion has been little affected by previous cases where executions were botched.
What is likely to happen, he said, is an incremental backing off from capital punishment because of the costs, delays and mounting concerns about executing the innocent.
Last year, 37 people were executed nationwide, the lowest number in 14 years, partly because of states' review of execution procedures. And 111 death sentences were issued, compared with more than 300 a year in the mid-1990s.
Since 1973, 135 people have been exonerated and freed from death rows, five of them this year.
Weisberg said California is a prime example of a state that retains a death penalty in theory yet rarely conducts executions despite having the nation's biggest death row, with 685 condemned prisoners.
In California, executions have been on hold since early 2006: Lethal injections have failed to fully anesthetize inmates in six of the 13 executions conducted in the state since capital punishment resumed in 1976.

Stay Tuned reported back in May that Mo’Nique would be joining the talk show club. That’s right. The Queen of Comedy will headline The Mo’Nique Show, a late night talk show premiering October 5 at 1opm, as part of BET’s new fall lineup.
The comedienne will interview A-List celebrities and present performances from today’s hot musical talent. It’s the typical talk show format, but I’m glad Mo’Nique has her own show. She’s my favorite Queen of Comedy. Plus, she makes things happen. She has books, movies, perfume, she appeared on Oprah—she doesn’t play.
In this case, Mo’Nique will be taking on the role of the interviewer but have you seen her being interviewed? She’s genuinely funny. Hopefully, she’ll take that same approach when the roles are reversed. If she does, then we’ll have nothing to worry about as the show will be a hit. I haven’t seen a late night talk show that I was really into since Arsenio Hall—and I had to sneak to watch that because I was barely out of diapers.
Other original programming premiering this fall on BET include Heart of the City, about journeys to various US cities to discover what’s happening in urban centers and the African American community, First In, about real life firefighters and paramedics living and working in Compton, Pay It Off, a game show hosted by Kim Coles, which will offer winning contestants debt relief and Monica: Still Standing, a docu-drama following the singer as she tackles being a full-time mother while staying in the music industry spotlight.
