Nine months after Michael Jackson’s death, his estate has signed one of the biggest recording contracts in history, giving Sony, Mr. Jackson’s longtime label, the rights to sell his back catalog and draw on a large vault of unheard recordings.

The deal, for about 10 recordings through 2017, will guarantee the Jackson estate up to $250 million in advances and other payments and offer an especially high royalty rate for sales both inside and outside the United States, according to people with knowledge of the contract who spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to speak about it publicly.

It also allows Sony and the estate to collaborate on a wide range of lucrative licensing arrangements, like the use of Jackson music for films, television and stage shows and lines of memorabilia that will be limited only by the imagination of the estate and the demand of a hungry worldwide market.

We think that recordings will always be an important part of the estate,” John Branca, an entertainment lawyer who is one of the estate’s executors, said in an interview on Monday. “New generations of kids are discovering Michael.”

A lot of the people that went to see ‘This Is It’ were families,” he added, referring to the Jackson concert film released in October. “ ‘This Is It’ was one of the few films allowed into China. So we think there are growing and untapped markets for Michael’s music.”

The first recording covered by the new contract is the “This Is It” soundtrack, released last year, and Sony plans a new album of unreleased recordings for November.

Sony’s contract is a bet on the continued appeal of Mr. Jackson, whose sales spiked after his death in June at the age of 50. With overall record sales on a decade-long plunge, mega-deals like this one have become rare, and Mr. Branca said the deal “exceeds all previous industry benchmarks.” Five years ago Bruce Springsteen signed a deal with Sony worth a reported $110 million, and in 2008 Live Nation and Jay-Z struck a $150 million deal for recordings, concert tours and other rights.

Demand for Jackson music has leveled off after the initial rush — in the weeks after his death Sony scrambled to replenish retailers’ stock of any and all Jackson titles — but remains high. Last year Mr. Jackson was the biggest-selling artist in the United States by a wide margin, with 8.3 million combined album sales and 12.4 million downloads of single tracks, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Mr. Branca said that since his death Mr. Jackson has sold more than 31 million albums, about two-thirds of them outside the United States.

But as record sales have tapered off over the last decade, licensing has emerged as the biggest growth area for revenue from recorded music. And given the success of the Beatles and the Elvis Presley estate in reissuing and repackaging old albums as well as finding new uses for their music — like “Love,” the Beatles’ hit theatrical show by Cirque du Soleil — it is not hard to imagine the direction that the Jackson estate might take in using old recordings in new ways.

It’s not just a record deal,” said Rob Stringer, chairman of the Columbia/Epic Label Group, a Sony division. “We’re not just basing this on how many CDs we sell or how many downloads. There are also audio rights for theater, movies, computer games. I don’t know how an audio soundtrack will be used in 2017, but you’ve got to bet on Michael Jackson in any new platform.”

Nicki Minaj is hip-hop's leading lady at the moment and the Young Money rapper proved she's adept at handling that spotlight during her turn as co-host of BET's "Rip the Runway."

The femcee was joined by The Game's Pooch Hall, and delivered her trademark sass both in rhyme and in jokes.

"Pooch, you haven't even complimented me on my shoes yet," Nicki said during the opening minutes, teasing the actor as the pair introduced the show, set to air March 15 on BET and Centric.

The Queens lyricist doubled as a performer also, joining Ludacris onstage for his hit "My Chick Bad."

"My chick bad, tell me if you seen her," Luda rapped. "She always bring the racket like Venus and Serena." Minaj stormed onstage for the third verse, much to the delight of her fans — there were plenty of Barbiez on board — in a snakeskin bodysuit and pink wig.

"Trash talk to them then I put them in a Hefty," she rhymed. "Running down the court, I'm dunking on them Lisa Leslie."

Along with the "Rip the Runway" performances, new designers' spring and summer lines were presented and showcased throughout the broadcast.

BET's "106 & Park" co-host Rocsi Diaz, Sean John model Miguel Perdomo and artist Amanda Diva were among those strutting down the catwalk.

Upstart MC B.o.B. a.k.a. Bobby Ray performed his first single, "Nothin' on You," as the Tennille White Chicago line was showcased.

Trina was partnered with Haute Couture during her performance and newcomer Roscoe Dash and Soulja Boy Tell'em had the rowdiest performance of the night, hands down, with "All the Way Turnt Up." The song was paired with sporty clothing line Protégé and featured a model in high heels frantically dribbling a basketball to the beat.

A solo turn by Minaj and performances by Janelle Monáe and Estelle featuring Kardinal Offishall ("Freak") rounded out the festivities.

While filming a video for his song "Over" on Friday in Los Angeles, Drake stood in front of an all-white backdrop wearing a white tee and white sneakers. What does he do in the clip? He does him.

"This is my first video," the Young Money franchise player said, sitting in his trailer. "I've shot a lot of videos before, but this is my first attempt to establish myself as Drake the artist. Shooting the other videos I've done has been great. I really don't care what other people think about them, they were great experiences for me. I've learned a lot from them. Today, I'm shooting with somebody I really look up to and respect. I'm shooting with Anthony Mandler."

Mandler, who has also made videos with Jay-Z and Rihanna, worked with Drake before on Mary J. Blige's "The One."

"We talked colors, we talked epic, emotion-evoking visuals," the 23-year-old Toronto native said of the collaborative "Over" video. "The story is actually interesting. The song is so aggressive, and it's sort of a love story in the video. It has a lot to do with the album [Thank Me Later]. The album is about finding love, feeling 'Have I sold my soul' as far as 'Will I ever be able to gain the trust of a woman? Will I only be able to be around the dark, evil women? Will I ever find that pure love?' Those elements are in the video. I look strong, I feel great, my knee's feeling great. I'm jumping around, doing all kinds of stuff."

The song "Over" touches on Drake reaction to fame and stardom. " 'Over' was definitely a choice of mine," he said of releasing it as a single. "I've got a lot of great songs on the album. A lot of songs that sound familiar but are brand-new. I still got the same emotions of the songs you love, whether it be 'Say Something' or 'Best I Ever Had' or 'Bedrock.' For people who enjoy what I've done in the past, I've got a lot of songs to cater to them. But 'Over' was a song I did for myself.

"We took a trip to Jamaica, where I did a lot of work for my album," he elaborated. "There was this calm before the storm, and 'Over' represented the storm to me. It's the moment. I wanted to emerge at first from this album and just let people know 'This is how I'm coming out in the public eye. I'm ready for anything.' Then when you get the album, it's like, 'Oh, he's still human. He's still thinking the same way.' I wanted people to understand I could have lost it. 'Over' could have been my entire album. Just 'cause that's what this industry and game will do to you if you lose yourself."

The # 1 Coke Boy has landed maybe the hottest entertainer on the planet right now in Lady Gaga for his one of his singles according to AllHipHop.

That’s going to be one of the singles, you know,” French Montana told AllHipHop.com. “I mean you talking about Gaga, you talking about a mil and a half a show. Like, that’s other kind of money. Gaga’s that new. Gaga’s that other money, you know, like you can’t compare her to nobody. You talk about Madonna this and that, like, Gaga’s that new talent.”

Two guns used in high-profile shootings this year at the Pentagon and a Las Vegas courthouse both came from the same unlikely place: the police and court system of Memphis, Tenn.

Law enforcement officials told The Associated Press that both guns were once seized in criminal cases in Memphis. The officials described how the weapons made their separate ways from an evidence vault to gun dealer and to the shooters.

The use of guns that once were in police custody and were later involved in attacks on police officer highlights a little-known divide in gun policy in the United States: Many cities and states destroy guns gathered in criminal probes, but others sell or trade the weapons in order to get other guns or buy equipment such as bulletproof vests.

In fact, on the day of the Pentagon shooting, March 4, the Tennessee governor signed legislation

revising state law on confiscated guns. Before, law enforcement agencies in the state had the option of destroying a gun. Under the new version, agencies can only destroy a gun if it's inoperable or unsafe.

Kentucky has a similar law, but it's not clear how many other states have laws specifically designed to promote the police sale or trade of confiscated weapons.

A nationwide review by The Associated Press in December found that over the previous two years, 24 states mostly in the South and West, where gun-rights advocates are particularly strong have passed 47 new laws loosening gun restrictions. Gun rights groups are making a greater effort to pass favorable legislation in state capitals.

John Timoney, who led the Philadelphia and Miami police departments and served as New York's No. 2 police official, said he doesn't believe police departments should be putting more guns into the market.

"I just think it's unseemly for police departments to be selling guns that later turn up," he said, recalling that he had once been offered the chance to sell guns to raise money for the police budget.

"Obviously, we always need the money but I just said, `No, we will take the loss and get rid of the guns'," said the former police chief, who now works for Andrews International, a security consulting firm.A spokeswoman for the Memphis police said gun swaps are a way to save taxpayer money.

One of the weapons in the Pentagon attack was seized by Memphis police in 2005 and later traded to a gun dealer; the gun used in the Jan. 4 courthouse shooting in Las Vegas was sold by a judge's order and the proceeds given to the Memphis-area sheriff's office. Neither weapon was sold by the Memphis law enforcement agencies directly to the men who later used them to shoot officers.

In both cases, the weapons first went to licensed gun dealers, but later came into the hands of men who were legally barred from possessing them: one a convicted felon; the other mentally ill.

The history of the two guns in the recent attacks was described by officials from multiple law enfocement agencies on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss details of the investigations. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives provided reports on the gun traces to the investigating agencies, but is barred from publicly disclosing the results.

At the Pentagon, gunman John Patrick Bedell carried two 9 mm handguns, one of them a Ruger.

Law enforcement officials say Bedell, a man with a history of severe psychiatric problems, had been sent a letter by California authorities Jan. 10 telling him he was prohibited from buying a gun because of his mental history.

Nineteen days later, the officials say, Bedell bought the Ruger at a gun show in Las Vegas. Such a sale by a private individual does not require the kind of background check that would have stopped Bedell's purchase.

Mike Campbell, an ATF spokesman in Washington, would not confirm the details. He would only say Bedell "appears to have purchased the gun from a private seller."

The gun already had changed hands among gun dealers in Georgia and Pennsylvania by the time Bedell bought it. Officer Karen Rudolph, a Memphis police spokeswoman, said her department traded the weapon to a dealer in 2008 for a different gun that was better for police work.

The Ruger had sat in Memphis police storage for years at that point, after being confiscated from a convicted felon at a 2005 traffic stop.

The trail of the gun used at the Las Vegas federal courthouse is older and harder to pin down. Johnny Lee Wicks, an elderly man enraged over cuts to his Social Security benefits, opened fire with the shotgun at the security entrance to the courthouse. He killed one officer, Stanley Cooper, and wounded another.

Wicks, like Bedell at the Pentagon, was killed by officers' return fire.

Before that courthouse attack, what records exist suggest officers in Memphis confiscated that gun in 1998.

A judge in Memphis ordered the sale of the shotgun as part of a criminal case, and the proceeds of that sale went to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, confirmed sheriff's spokesman Steve Shular.

He said the gun dealer who bought it later sold the weapon to a dealer in Nevada. It is not clear how Wicks got the shotgun.

Rich Wyatt, a former police chief in Alma, Colo., who now operates a gun store and who has bought weapons from police agencies defended the practice of police selling guns.

"Maybe if they put the money they made selling the guns into training those officers better, they'd be better off," said Wyatt. "Nobody ever, ever questions selling a car that was used in a crime. I am sad that officers were shot, but I don't care where the guns came from. To say we need to chase guns is not the issue, we need to chase people."

Tony Yayo recently sat down with M Reck and Doggie Diamonds of Forbez DVD to talk about former G-Unit singer Olivia.

In an interview 50 Cent said he spent around $2 million dollars on her while she was with G-Unit.

Her response to that was he should have spent $4 million, which is ridiculous.

Yayo breaks down the differences in expenses for male and female artists and why he believes 50 Cent did right by Olivia.

(AllHipHop News) Queens, New York rapper Lloyd Banks’ debuted the video for his latest single “Beamer, Benz or Bentley” today (March 15).

The single is taken from his upcoming album and has become popular on mix shows and clubs around the country, while a variety of rappers have already laid their own verses down over the instrumental to the track.

Banks reflected on the success of the single and the staying power of the mixtape game in an upcoming interview with AllHipHop.com.

The success of ‘Beamer, Benz, or Bentley,’ it just reminds me of all the places I’ve gone due to a single record,” Lloyd Banks told AllHipHop.com. “One record could take an international artist back around the world.”

Banks will repay Juelz Santana for his cameo on “Beamer, Benz or Bentley” with an appearance on The Skull Gang leader’s upcoming mixtape The Reagan Era.

Banks is currently touring across Europe with rapper 50 Cent on the "Before I Self Destruct Tour."

While the rapper enjoys playing the live arenas that 50 Cent is able to fill, he told AllHipHop.com that the smaller, intimate venues were special to him.

We’re more excited about those shows than anywhere else because….we get a chance to do the material you want to do, not the material they used to hearing,” Banks told AllHipHop.com.

To get out there and give them that mixtape material mixed in with the hits that they know…that’s always a good feeling.

Philadelphia rapper Beanie Sigel is featured in the video, adding fuel to lingering speculation that he will be officially joining the G-Unit camp after a falling out with former friend/collaborator, Jay-Z.

Banks and Sigel performed together over the summer at Great Adventure, during a trip for neighborhood kids sponsored by 50 Cent.

Shout out to Beans,” Lloyd Banks told AllHipHop.com. “Beans came out did his record, which is like a whole new raw energy, similar to when we did the 40 Day event [in Queens].

LaDainian Tomlinson Signs With New York Jets

NEW YORK -- LaDainian Tomlinson is bolting for the Big Apple.

Tomlinson's agent, Tom Condon, said Sunday that the New York Jets signed the former Chargers running back to a two-year contract.

The Jets confirmed that they have agreed to a deal, adding the aging star to the NFL's top-ranked rushing offense last season.

A source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that Tomlinson's contract is for $5.1 million with an escalator that could boost it to $5.6 million.

"He wanted to go to a team that he thought had a chance to compete for the championship," Condon told the AP. "He wanted to go somewhere where he had a chance to have a significant role, and so with the Jets he also was going to be very familiar with the offensive system."

The Jets reached the AFC Championship Game last season, eliminating Tomlinson and the Chargers along the way.

The 2006 NFL MVP, cut last month by San Diego, chose New York over Minnesota after visiting the Vikings on Thursday. Tomlinson spent Friday with the Jets, capping it with dinner with coach Rex Ryan, general manager Mike Tannenbaum and other team officials.

The Jets went after Tomlinson hard even though he turns 31 in June, is coming off his least productive season and there are questions whether he has much left. New York apparently still saw plenty to like from Tomlinson, who ranks eighth on the NFL's career rushing list with 12,490 yards.

Once one of the NFL's most dynamic players, Tomlinson is expected to back up second-year running back Shonn Greene, who emerged in his rookie season and made Thomas Jones expendable. Jones signed with Kansas City last week after running for a career-high 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Ayman Najafi, 24, who lives in Dubai, and Charlotte Adams, 25, an estate agent from North London, were reported to police by a fellow diner who claimed their display of affection had been offensive and indecent.

They were arrested and sentenced to a month in prison after which they were told they would be deported.

But the pair told a hearing at the Dubai Appeal Court yesterday that they were the victims of a "huge misunderstanding" and had simply exchanged a friendly greeting.

"We kissed each other on the cheek as a greeting, nothing more,” Mr Najafi told Judge Aysar Fouad. Miss Adams pointed at her cheek to show where contact had taken place.

Miss Adams, who was privately educated, and Mr Najafi met along with four other friends for dinner at Bob's Easy Diner on the beachfront at the Jumeirah Beach Residence complex, which is popular with Westerners.

The police were called at around 2am by an Emirati woman sitting at a nearby table with her children and claimed her daughter had been upset by the display of affection.

"My daughter told me that the accused were kissing on the mouth,” she said.

Then I spotted them doing so myself. I also saw them touching each other, as they were seated two to three metres away from our table. A number of customers witnessed the scene as well.”

After being arrested, the two were tested for alcohol and shown to have been drinking, though the readings of 22mg/dl are less than the drink-drive limit in Britain.

At a first court hearing, after they were arrested on November 27, their defence lawyer Khalaf al Hosany said the couple admitted kissing each other on the cheek but denied any intention to break the law.

“It’s part of their culture to kiss on cheeks as a greeting,” he told the judge.

But their pleas of not guilty to indecency were rejected and they were sentenced to a month in prison followed by deportation.

They were also fined 1000 dirham (180 pounds) for being in a public place after consuming alcohol - an offence in Dubai, though drinking alcohol itself is not.

Mr Najafi has lived in Dubai for 18 months, where he works as a consultant for the Hay Group, a marketing firm.

Speaking after the appeal hearing, he said he was appealing to clear his name, he said: “I could have accepted the sentence, but I believe I have done nothing wrong and I want to stand up for that." The court has reserved its verdict on the until April 4.

An official in Dubai claimed that Miss Adams had flown out to visit Mr Najafi and was staying with him as his girlfriend.

However, she told The Daily Telegraph yesterday that she was staying with another friend and Mr Najafi was simply an old friend.

"Ayman and I are not or have ever have been a couple," she said.

Her flatmate Jade Christa Williams, acting as a spokesman for Miss Adams, said what had happened was simply "a huge misunderstanding". “Charlotte is not at all disrespectful of Dubai’s laws and fully understands their culture," she said.

"She is completely innocent and is looking forward to coming home soon to carry on with her life and put this behind her.”

Mr Najafi's brother Amier said he would not have been reckless enough to break the law.

"My brother obviously knew the rules when he went out there but in the Emirates they always take the word of locals against foreigners," he said.

"He doesn't want to do anything to make the situation worse than it is and he understands that trying to put pressure on the Dubai authorities could backfire. But he's absolutely clear that he only kissed the girl on the cheek."

Miss Adams' mother Lorraine Cope, from Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, is in regular contact with her daughter, who remains on bail but without her passport while her appeal is processed.

"I speak to Charlotte every day," she said. "I had to break the news to her grandparents today and it's Mother's Day.

"I haven't heard from the Foreign Office and I can't discuss anything about what's happened."

The two are not the first Britons to fall foul of the strict laws in the conservative Muslim state. Last year Michelle Palmer, 36, and Vince Acors, 34, were sentenced to three months imprisonment for having sex on a beach.

Boston-area rapper Sam Adams has had quite the roller-coaster month.

His debut album, "Boston's Boy" debuted at the top of the iTunes hip-hop digital album charts after selling just under 8,000 digital units in its first week. But the Cinderella story quickly faded after rumors began to spread that he may have been responsible for most, if not all, of the sales himself as a stunt to gain notoriety.

It certainly wouldn't be the first time sales charts have been gamed to garner a No. 1 spot, and all the attention that honor can bring an emerging new artist.

But so far, the evidence doesn't support the accusations made against him. For starters, SoundScan data shows that 22% of his sales came from the Boston area, not surprising considering he's from the area and that's where his largest fanbase would be. Another 18% of his sales came from New York. The rest came from more than 100 markets nationwide-including Philadelphia, L.A., Washington D.C., and Chicago-and no one market totaled more that 5% each.

Additionally, it's not possible to simply buy up a bunch of songs from one account and have them all count towards iTunes charts. Sources at both Apple and Nielsen confirm that Apple only counts one sale per account to any charts. In essence: one account = one "vote."

The blog that apparently first wrote about the alleged stunt -- Boston area hip-hop blog JumpTheTurnstyle -- has since retracted the story under the weight of such evidence.
