Kendrick Lamar definitely brought awareness back to West Coast hip hop in 2012. His good kid, m.A.A.d city album lived up to the hype. Both critics and fans alike appreciated the Compton emcees Aftermath debut. The project sold 242,122 copies in its first week.
The Source magazine recognizes Kendrick's accomplishments by crowning him the king in its 3rd annual Rookie Of The Year issue.

Kendrick Lamar on his religious beliefs at a young age: "We couldn't believe something we dind't know about. As a kid, all we seeing is street sh*t... When you see one of your partners get smoked and that same day you have someone coming to you preaching to you asking you, 'Do you believe in God?,' it gives you a [different] outlook."
