Poll After The Jump

Locked in an ugly war of words with Gabriel Aubry, the father of her 2-year old daughter Nahla, Halle Berry is making it known that her daughter is black despite what anyone else may think.

Amid reports by TMZ that Gabriel, who is French Canadian, "goes nuts" anytime it's said his daughter is anything other than white, Berry gave Ebony Magazine an interview clarifying her beliefs.

"I feel like she's black, I'm black and I'm her mother, and I believe in the one-drop theory," Berry said,

The one-drop theory is a belief by some that anyone with African ancestry is black.

According to Pew Research, 1 out of 7 marriages in 2010 was either interracial or interethnic, citing these statistics:

*A record 14.6% of all new marriages in the United States in 2008 were between spouses of a different race or ethnicity from one another. This includes marriages between a Hispanic and non-Hispanic (Hispanics are an ethnic group, not a race) as well as marriages between spouses of different races -- be they white, black, Asian, American Indian or those who identify as being of multiple races or "some other" race

*Among all newlyweds in 2008, 9% of whites, 16% of blacks, 26% of Hispanics and 31% ofAsians married someone whose race or ethnicity was different from their own

Despite statistics like these which indicate there will be a large wave of mixed race children over the next century, people are still categorized as one specific race.

Berry, whose mother is white says when her daughter is old enough she will have to make that decision for herself

"If you're of multiple races, you have a different challenge, a unique challenge of embracing all of who you are but still finding a way to identify yourself, and I think that's often hard for us to do," she said.

Is the one-drop theory an outdated way to classify a race of people?

  • My lil bro mixed with black and white 50/50. Whenever I ask him if he white he says "Naw, I'm black." but then I say isn't he white too and then he just says "Nope.". I think he may be puttin up a front because I'm black and he wants to be accepted. I wonder what he would say if I was white and asked him that...
