Hate to say we told you so, but, we told you so: Marvel Studios have declared that "The Avengers 2," the sequel to Joss Whedon's record-breaking superhero flick, will hit theaters on May 1, 2015.
Disney has confirmed what MTV News reported earlier this month about Marvel's "Avengers" sequel landing on screens worldwide bright and early in May 2015. The announcement of the release date comes one week after MTV's Kara Warner spoke with industry insiders who hinted at the now confirmed date.
"It looks like the release date might be May 1, 2015, but that can change depending on people's schedules," an insider said. "The beauty of 'The Avengers' is that you've got so many people in this that even during the shoot if someone has to do another film they can just focus on [other characters]."
The new "Avengers" release date marks the fifth Marvel movie to have a place on the calendar. "Iron Man 3" bows in May 2013, "Thor 2" in November 2013, "Captain America 2" in April 2014, and "Guardians of the Galaxy" in August 2014. There is also the possibility of a sixth film, Edgar Wright's "Ant-Man," sneaking onto the calendar at some point before another "Avengers" film hits, as Marvel Studios co-president Louis D'Esposito recently told MTV News that the studio was considering adding a third film to their current model of two superhero flicks per year.
"The temptation is to try a third, and maybe we will," he told MTV in July. "But we're a small group. It's very, very difficult. We're unique as a studio. We're not just the studio, we produce the films ourselves. It requires a lot of hands on time and effort. You can only stretch it so much before it breaks. So we're very mindful of that. We have to check our enthusiasm. We can't be overly aggressive. We still want to make quality films, and that's the most important thing for us."
Whedon will return to write and direct the "Avengers" sequel.
