Video After The Jump
The group Hollaback! sponsored a video that shows a woman walking through Manhanttan for ten hours to gauge the responses she would get from men.
The reaction from the males in the video ranged from simple compliments, to cat calls. One guy even follows her for five minutes.
The clip entitled "10 Hours of Walking Through NYC as a Woman" has racked up over 8.6 million views since being posted on YouTube October 28. But it seems not everyone is happy about it.
Shoshana Roberts
According to Hollaback! executive director Emily May, the aspiring actress in the video Shoshana Roberts is now receiving rape threats.
“Unfortunately, the behavior that we see on the streets, we also see online,” May told the New York Daily News. “We were horrified by what we were seeing but we weren’t shocked. It’s part of the culture. It’s part of something we’re looking to change the root cause of so people aren’t harrassing on the streets and on the Internet.”
May says Roberts is receiving disturbing emails and her office has fielded 10 calls threatening the actress.
The group is asking anyone who sees threats being made online to contact police.
Watch the video below and give us your thoughts on what crosses the line between giving a woman a compliment and harassing her.
