19-year old Georgia rapper and 2016 XXL Freshman, Lil Yachty, has amassed a strong fan base from his "Lil Boat" and "Summer Songs 2" mixtapes.
He prides himself on doing things his way, but part of what makes artists in any genre of music successful is studying the greats that came before them. Not to copy their style, but to have a better understanding of what it takes to create a lasting persona.
That's why it's surprising that during a new interview with Billboard, Yachty, admitted that he "honestly couldn't name five songs" by hip hop legends The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur.
"But if I'm doing this my way and making all this money," he reasoned, "why should I do it how everybody says it's supposed to be done?"
