BALTIMORE — (WBALTV) A young boy died after he was shot in the head Friday evening in west Baltimore, Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said.

City police said officers were called around 5:06 p.m. to the 2100 block of Presbury Street, where they found a 7-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound.

Officers immediately rendered aid & the boy was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he died, Harrison said. Homicide detectives are now investigating.

"We don't have many details, but we have this unfortunate, very tragic incident with yet another child losing a life in Baltimore City," Harrison said.

"There are no words to describe what this family and community are going through. A very, very young child lost their life today," Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said.

Harrison said officers took an 18-year-old man into custody & there's an emergency petition for a psychiatric evaluation underway.

Police did not say whether the 7-year-old boy & the 18-year-old man are related. They also did not say who the gun belonged to.

No further information was immediately released.
