Alex Rodriguez, Major League Baseball's highest-paid player, was suspended for the remainder of the current season and all of next year for using performance-enhancing drugs, the harshest of some 13 penalties doled out by the league Monday.
The suspension of the New York Yankees third-baseman was expected, and is subject to an appeal - which Rodriguez said he plans to pursue. Under the league's collective bargaining agreement, Rodriguez, who has missed the entire season battling injuries and is just now ready to come off the disabled list, can play while appealing the suspension, which is effective Aug. 8.
"I am disappointed with the penalty and intend to appeal and fight this through the process," Rodriguez said in a statement. "I am eager to get back on the field and be with my teammates in Chicago tonight. I want to thank my family, friends and fans who have stood by my side through all this."
Yankees Manager Joe Girardi signaled that he plans to put the 38-year-old slugger in the lineup for Monday night's game against the Chicago White Sox.
"He's in there, and I'm going to play him," Girardi said Sunday after New York's 6-3 loss at San Diego.
Rodriguez's suspension "is based on his use and possession of numerous forms of prohibited performance-enhancing substances, including Testosterone and Human Growth Hormone, over the course of multiple years," and for "engaging in a course of conduct intended to obstruct and frustrate the Office of the Commissioner's investigation," according to a news release from Major League Baseball. Rodriguez would forfeit his salaries from the remainder of this season and all of next, but is owed $61 million by the Yankees from 2015-17, and could earn millions more as he closes in on the all-time home run record.
The Yankees released a statement after the suspensions came down expressing support for the league but sharply addressing claims that they are trying to get out of what has become a lousy contract.
"The New York Yankees in no way instituted and/or assisted MLB in the direction of this investigation; or used the investigation as an attempt to avoid its responsibilities under a player contract; or did its medical staff fail to provide the appropriate standard of care to Alex Rodriguez," the statement read.
In addition to Rodriguez, baseball handed out 50-game suspensions to a dozen other players for violating Major League Baseball’s drug policy. Only Rodriguez was expected to appeal.
Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz, Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta, Phillies reliever Antonio Bastardo, Mets outfielder Jordany Valdespin, Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera, free-agent pitcher Jordan Norberto, Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli, Mariners catcher Jesus Montero, Mets outfielder Cesar Puello, Astros pitcher Sergio Escalona, Padres pitcher Fautino De Los Santos and Yankees outfielder Fernando Martinez have accepted their punishments handed out by Major League Baseball, FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports, citing unidentified sources close to the matter.
The Texas Rangers said Monday that they were “disappointed” in Cruz. Cruz said in a statement that he had a gastrointestinal infection that went undiagnosed at the beginning of 2012, making him unsure if he would be physically able to play.
"Faced with this situation, I made an error in judgment that I deeply regret, and I accept full responsibility for that error,” Cruz said. “I should have handled the situation differently, and my illness was no excuse.”
Peralta said he got suspended because he made a “lapse in judgment.”
“I apologize to everyone that I have hurt as a result of my mistake, including my teammates, the Tigers' organization, the great fans in Detroit, Major League Baseball, and my family,” Peralta said.
The San Diego Padres also said the organization stands behind the league's decision to suspend Cabrera.
"The accepted suspensions announced today are consistent with the punishments set forth in the Joint Drug Agreement, and were arrived at only after hours of intense negotiations between the bargaining parties, the players and their representatives," Major League Baseball Players Association Executive Director Michael Weiner said Monday afternoon.
The Union's members have made it clear that they want a clean game," Weiner added. "They support efforts to discipline players, and harshly, to help ensure an even playing field for all."
Athletics pitcher Bartolo Colon, Blue Jays outfielder Melky Cabrera and Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal received no additional punishments. They each have served 50-game suspensions following a positive test.
Nationals pitcher Gio Gonzalez and Orioles infielder Danny Valencia, whose names surfaced in early reports about the now-closed Biogenesis of America anti-aging clinic in Florida, have been cleared of any wrongdoing.
Rodriguez is the most famous player linked to Biogenesis, and the Yankees expect him to be charged with interfering with MLB's investigation, resulting in a harsher penalty than the other 13 players facing discipline.
If Rodriguez challenges the suspension, his appeal would be heard by arbitrator Fredric Horowitz.
Yankees outfielder Curtis Granderson was excited Rodriguez could play during an appeal.
"I want him back with us. This is arguably one of the best hitters of all time," he said. "Having him in the lineup is obviously going to be very positive for us."

Chief Keef just learned a very expensive lesson. When you get sued it would be wise to your lawyers on the case right away.
The 17-year old rapper, real name Keith Kozart, was sued by a concert promotion company called Team Major after he was a no show for a December 2012 concert in London.
The company claimed they lost $75,000 because of it, including the Chicago native's advance.
Four months passed and Keef never bothered to respond to the suit. Now he'll have to pay a default judgement of $230,019 as ordered by the judge in the case for damages, loss of earnings, and reputational harm, according to TMZ.

Uncle Murda released a song on Funkmaster Flex's recent mixtape titled "Do Sumthin." In it he takes direct aim at former Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight. and issues a not so veiled threat.
Uncle M sat down with Vlad TV to explain the song's lyrics.
"I'm from Brooklyn, I grew up listening to Biggie. He was one of my favorite artists," Murda said. "It's self explanatory. I had a lot of love and respect for Biggie. Even though I never even got to meet Biggie. But I love what he was doing for the hood. For Brooklyn, for the whole East Coast."
Murda says he's heard rumors about Biggie's 1997 killing and isn't happy about it.
"I'm from Brooklyn and I didn't like how [Biggie's death] went down and I'm not supposed to," Murda continued. "I'm part of that team...the Brooklyn team. My guy Biggie ain't here."
The rapper also spoke on what's lacking in Hip Hop right now.
"I feel like everybody is so f*cking happy. Everybody's all down with each other. There's so much f*cking sucking d*ck. Where's the competition?"

Justin Bieber's entourage is under investigation for allegedly knocking a man unconscious during a brawl.
The singer and his crew were at South Pointe nightclub in Southampton, New York on Saturday (August 3rd) when an argument broke out between Justin and the male friend of a woman who had tried to speak to the pop star in the VIP section, but was denied.
“He (Bieber) ripped his shirt off and went nuts. He was screaming,” a source told the New York Daily News.
The argument spilled outside, where a fight broke out. TMZ reports that Justin jumped through the sunroof onto the hood of the SUV he was in while members of his team, which included four bodyguards and friends allegedly knocked the unidentified man out.
A police report was filed. Authorities are looking into what happened. Bieber is not the target of the investigation, only his crew.

The New York Police Department is investigating the shooting of a 14-year old teen by a rookie cop in the Bronx on Sunday (August 4th).
Shaaliver Douse was allegedly chasing and shooting at another man when two rookie cops heard gunshots and responded by going to the scene. They say Douse was asked to drop his weapon. After he continued to fire, one of the officers fired one shot, hitting the teen in the face, killing him.

Police say they prevented Douse from murdering his intended target.
“These officers stopped that from happening,” NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly said, according to the New York Daily News. “I don’t see what the officers could have done any differently.”
Douse was arrested in May for attempted murder after shooting another teen in the shoulder. The charges were reduced to felony gun possession after key witnesses recanted their testimony. He was due back in Bronx Supreme Court on Aug. 23. Authorities are wondering how the teen got another gun so soon after the first incident.
“We don’t know the history of this gun. It will take us a while, but we will get a history on it,” Kelly vowed. “But most likely, if 90% of the guns we’re confiscating come from out of state, most likely this gun has been purchased out of state or somehow obtained out of state, stolen, and brought to New York City.”
