Can Universal top their epic 1983 film Scarface? One thing is for certain, they're going to try.
The studio has tapped Jonathan Herman to rewrite the script, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Producers on board include Marty Bregman, who produced the 1983 version, Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark for Bluegrass Films and Marc Shmuger for his Global Produce company.
Pablo Larrain will sit in the director's chair.
In the 1983 version Al Pacino played Tony Montana, a Cuban refugee who rises to the top of a criminal empire. The remake will be similar except this time around it will center around a Mexican immigrant.
When asked about the remake Al Pacino thought it was a good idea.
"Oh, it's fine," Pacino said the New York premiere of his new film, Danny Collins via THR. "It's part of what we do. We remake things."
