"The city's lost, so out-of-towners find themselves frontin'/ It was Big, Jay Z, now Troy Ave here after/But Kendrick Lamar's just a weirdo rapper." Troy Ave "New York City"
Troy Ave has NY buzzing with his debut album, New York City. After an interview with The Breakfast Club earlier in the day, the Brooklyn emcee stopped by Hot 97 to chop it up with Cipha Sounds and Peter Rosenberg.
Troy talks about the meaning behind his dope boy lyrics, why he picked N.O.R.E., Raekwon and Prodigy for the song "New York City," creating his own wave, and why he believes Kendrick Lamar is a "weirdo rapper."
"I was stating a fact," Troy said, when asked why he referred to K. Dot as a "weirdo rapper." "It wasn't a diss or nothing. That's like when someone says, 'Troy Ave is a dark skin rapper.' It's a fact. "Right now with social media there's a lot of groups that's getting mixed and jelled into one and it doesn't go like that. With rock music, you have different genres of rock. With rap music you just can't fuse all types of rap. The basis of rap is from the streets. Every artist of any era in rap history... the biggest artist has always been from the street. Now you got the sub-genres. It's never been cool to talk about short shorts. You don't do that. Rap is fly and flashy. That's what it comes from, the streets,"
Kendrick grew up in Compton, California, one of the toughest cities in America. Troy goes on to explain why that doesn't give him a pass in his opinion. Kanye West and the Flatbush Zombies get thrown into Troy's "weirdo" category as well.
"It's a difference in being from an area and being in the streets," Troy continued. "I don't know Kendrick personally to to try to diss him. I think that's corny. Kanye [West's] a weirdo. There's a lot of rappers that's weirdos. I like a lot of Kendrick's records too. [But] it's mad weirdo rappers. Y'all don't understand. The majority of rappers are weirdos. {Flatbush Zombies] weirdos 100%. This is why the game is twisted. At what point did we star celebrating the drug user instead of the dealer? This sh*t is backwards."
