SMS Promotions fighter James Kirkland is preparing to fight Canelo Alvarez on May 9th is in a Super Welterweight battle.
On Tuesday, March 3, a press conference for the bout was held at Minute Maid Park in Houston. Fans turned out in droves to see the two fighters.
Golden Boy Promotions, in association with Canelo Promotions, SMS Promotions and Leija*Battah Promotions are promoting the fight, which will be televised on HBO.
Both fighters are confident heading into the bout. Canelo enters the fight with a record of (44-1-1, 31 knockouts). Kirkland's résumé in equally impressive at (32-1, 28 KOs).
“(Kirkland) is very strong and very aggressive, but I always train differently for every rival I have and this is no exception,” Alvarez said via the Houston Chronicle. “I’m going to be aggressive and I’m going to attack him but I’m going to be smart doing it. I’m going to win.
“I plan on showing Alvarez something that he hasn’t even seen before,” Kirkland said. “That’s what’s going to happen May 9. I feel like getting back in the ring with a guy like Alvarez is proving something to everybody. It’s saying Kirkland’s not just a fighter. It’s saying Kirkland can do it all. I’m truly a warrior inside and outside the ring.”
The fight will be held at Houston's Minute Maid Park.
