What R. Kelly thought would be an interview in support of his latest album, "The Buffet," quickly turned into a tense back-and-forth debate with Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani of Huffington Post Live over his sexually explicit lyrics and past sexual assault accusations, Monday, December 21.
The interview lasted 20-minutes. Towards the end is where things took a turn for the worse.
Modarressy-Tehrani told Kelly that at any point he could exit the interview if he chose to do so. He replied that if the next question to come out of her mouth was negative, he would.
This is what followed:
Modarressy-Tehrani: There's gonna be no negativity, I'm just asking you questions, sir.
Kelly: Well, I know the difference between a negative question and a positive one. So, if I think it's negative I'm gonna walk.
Modarressy-Tehrani: Let's talk about your lyrics for a moment. Would you say you have a healthy relationship with sex? Sex is mentioned frequently in your lyrics. In many of the songs you talk about having sex with multiple women. Would you say you have a healthy relationship with sex and that is reflected musically?
Kelly: I would have to say this. I did not come here to get interrogated. I didn't come here for a deposition. You know what a deposition is?
Modarressy-Tehrani: I'm very aware of what a deposition is.
Kelly: Then you should agree with me when I say that this sounds sort of like a deposition.
Modarressy-Tehrani: I think it may be (my accent). I'm asking you specifically about your music.
Kelly: I don't hear your accent. I'm not paying attention to your accent. I'm only paying attention to the English that comes out of your mouth. This is a deposition. This is not about R. Kelly. This is not about music. This is not about someone who works hard on his music, who has an album out. This is about trying to interrogate me. And this is about disrespect.
Modarressy-Tehrani: Mr. Kelly I don't think I'm disrespecting you. I asked you a very specific question about your lyrics.
Kelly: Well, that's the level of your intelligence, not mine.
Modarressy-Tehrani: I asked you a very specific question about your music and your lyrics.
Kelly: If you don't think think you're disrespecting me, like I said, that's just the level of your intelligence...not mine. Do you drink?
Modarressy-Tehrani: Yeah (I drink)
Kelly: Do you get drunk?
Modarressy-Tehrani: Yeah
Kelly: You fall all over and not know where you're at?
Modarressy-Tehrani: I don't understand the line of questioning, but no.
Kelly: Exactly. But it ain't positive is it? It has nothing to do with your job does it?
Modarressy-Tehrani: But I'm asking you specifically about your music and your lyrics.
Kelly: No, you're asking me about my personal life.
Modarressy-Tehrani: Your personal life has started to interfere with the way people consume your lyrics.
Kelly: You're here to do a job. You're here to get ratings, I respect that. But you won't be getting them off me if you're gonna interrogate me.
Modarressy-Tehrani: I'm not interrogating you.
Kelly: I'm in New York, I'm having a great time. I'm finna visit some friends. I'm finna do some more business. I'm finna have a great time. I didn't come here for you to spoil that.
Modarressy-Tehrani: You're here to promote an album.
Kelly: You have one more question.
Modarressy-Tehrani: I have one more question?
Kelly: Yeah
Modarressy-Tehrani: What do you say to the multiple fans...The many fans who are watching and listening. There have been multiple accusations against you in Chicago. And they are concerned about your past. It's impacting them from purchasing your music.
Kelly: I love 'em all. It doesn't matter who they are. If they hate me, they love me, they wanna destroy me...whatever. I love 'em all. And I love you too.
Modarressy-Tehrani: You don't need to give me any of your love, sir.
Kelly: I love everybody.
Modarressy-Tehrani: You don't need to give me your love. I just wanted to ask the question. What do you say to the fans who don't want to buy your music?
Kelly: I'm not gonna allow you to do that, but I love you. I love my fans.
Modarressy-Tehrani: I have a video question for you from a fan.
Kelly: You don't have any video questions for me because this interview is over.
And that was that. What's your take on the line of questioning by Modarressy-Tehrani? Was Kelly right to cut the interview short?
