KUTV - University of Utah star, freshman running back Ty Jordan has died. University of Utah Football confirmed via a post on Twitter.
Condolences poured in on Sunday morning as the news broke via social media posts that Jordan died in an accidental shooting in Denton, Texas. Jordan is from Mesquite, Texas.
Utah Head Football Coach Kyle Whittingham said the following in a statement:
“Words cannot express the devastation and heartache that our team is feeling right now upon learning of the tragic death of our teammate and brother, Ty Jordan. Ty’s personality and smile were infectious and he made a huge impact on our program in the short time he was with us. He leaves an indelible mark on each of us and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. From the bottom of our hearts, all of us in the Utah Football Family want to say we love you Ty and may you rest in peace.”
Denton Police reported via Twitter on Saturday night, that they responded to a shooting on the 1100 Block of Avenue A. They said there was no danger to the public as the victim accidentally discharged the weapon. They did not confirm the name of the deceased and referred questions to the local medical examiner's office which did not answer phone calls.
On the field Ty Jordan’s career was taking off. Jordan was in a four way competition for the running back job when the Ute season started and by the third game he was a star.
Jordan was named the Pac12 Newcomer of the Year by the Associated Press and also earned All-Pac12 2nd team honors. He ran for 597 yards and scored six touchdowns in just five games. Jordan averaged 7.2 yards per carry which was 10th best nationally, according to NCAA.com.
