Houston rapper Big Pokey collapsed while performing Saturday night in Beaumont, video circulating on social media showed & a local outlet — quoting a government official — reported he died.
Big Pokey, whose given name was Milton Powell, had been performing a show at Pour 09 Bar. A video posted to social media showed Powell with a microphone in hand when he suddenly appeared to faint or pass out, falling backward & landing on his back. The video shows people rushing over to him to offer aid.
Powell was a member of Screwed Up Click, a group of Houston-based rappers.
Artists have publicly posted condolences following Powell's death.
“I wasn’t ready for this. One of the most naturally talented artists in the city. Low key, humble mountain of a man who moved with honor and respect. He was easy to love & hard to hate,” fellow rapper Bun B posted on Instagram.
"He’d pull up, do what he had to do & head home. One of the pillars of our city. If heart of gold was a person. Iconic member of the SUC. There will never be another & will be missed dearly. We love & honor you Sensei. Rest in heaven," Bun B continued.
