The federal government may be called in to quell the growing violence that plagues the city of Chicago.

According to the website HeyJackass, which tracks the number of homicides and those injured by violence in the city, there have been 45 murders so far in 2017. A total of 204 citizens have been shot and wounded.

Chicago finished 2016 with a total of 716 killed and 3,663 shot and wounded.

The Reverend Jesse Jackson responded to Trump by tweeting that the problem can't be solved by simply locking people up.

"We need a plan, not a threat. We need jobs, not jails," wrote Jackson.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said he would welcome help from the federal government, but was critical of the lack of support his city has been given in the past.

"Over the years the federal government's stepped back their resources, which we have stepped up," Emanuel told WTTW's Chicago Tonight. "The federal government can be a partner, and to be honest they haven't been for decades."
