PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — A 30-year-old Gresham woman was sentenced Tuesday for criminal mistreatment after she waterboarded her baby & put him in a freezer to test if the baby's dad cared.
Sharday McDonald was given 30 days in jail in the Tuesday sentencing, as well as 3 years of probation, for convictions of criminal mistreatment, tampering with a witness & ID theft.
In October 2021 Gresham Police responded to a report of a mom putting her baby in a freezer at an apartment.
As officers arrived, they heard a woman yelling through the door, "You don't want him. Let me show you this little f---ing baby, I don't f----ing give a f--ck about."
When the woman, later identified as McDonald, answered the door, she was holding the baby in a blanket.
The baby's dad later arrived & showed police a video call he had with McDonald where she was holding her baby by his onesie & waterboarding him. The officer wrote in police reports that it looked like the baby was trying to hold his breath while water was pouring down his face & into his nose.
McDonald said she was sorry & that she did it to test the dad to see if "he gave a f--ck at all" & thought putting her baby under running water would make the dad come back.
She told officers she was not trying to hurt or kill her son by drowning him or putting him in the freezer, but did say that waterboarding the baby was done out of spite.
The court documents state police spoke with & showed pictures of the incident to a pediatrician, who said the child would have been unable to breathe while having water poured into his nose & that it could have had serious & life-threatening complications.
It is unclear from court records whether the baby is back with his father and what condition he is in.
McDonald was previously convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in Texas in 2016.
