LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Opening statements are expected once the court reconvenes in the Tupac Shakur murder trial in Las Vegas on Monday.
After four days of jury selection, the trial of Duane "Keffe D" Davis is set to begin in earnest. The proceedings will start with the prosecution's opening statement, which will outline the evidence and witnesses in their case against Davis.
Davis' defense attorney, Michael Sanft, then has the choice to follow immediately with his opening statement or hold it in reserve until the state's case has rested. Opening statements do not include arguments.
The prosecution will call its first witness after Sanft's decision.
Davis, 63, the first person charged in connection with the fatal 1996 shooting of the rap icon Tupac Shakur near the Las Vegas Strip.
Authorities allege Davis provided the gun and arranged the shooting in retaliation for a brawl involving his nephew, pointing to statements from Davis' own memoir and interviews with media and law enforcement.
His lawyers over the years after argued that Davis lied about his involvement for profit.
There will be 12 jurors and four alternates seated for the duration of the trial, which is expected to last several weeks.
Some high-profile witnesses could include Marion "Suge" Knight, the incarcerated former head of Death Row Records who was in the car with Shakur at the time of the shooting; Greg Kading, a former Los Angeles police detective who wrote a tell-all book implicating Davis in Shakur's death; and Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo, formerly the Clark County sheriff.
