Video After The Jump
An Auburn lacrosse player went bananas during a visit to Louisiana. 20-year old Zachary Burgess of Hooyer, Alabama, rampaged through Baton Rouge on Saturday, September 21.
Authorities say Burgess stole a truck that the owner had left running in a bar parking lot, which had a female inside. He forced the woman to stay with him while he used the truck to smash into 9 vehicles as witnesses tried to prevent him from leaving the area.
Police responded to the scene after getting a call reporting a stolen vehicle and an erratic driver.
"We responded to numerous reports of hit-and-runs in the parking lot of a local bar,” Cpl. Don Coppola of the Baton Rouge Police Department, told NBC33. “The vehicle was found abandoned a few yards away from the scene and a group of witnesses were holding the suspect at the location when officers arrived.”
The woman being held in the truck was able to escape by "jumping out of the vehicle to get to safety,”
When Burgess was questioned by police he told them “wanted to see what it was really like to play the video game Grand Theft Auto.”
He was charged with kidnapping, theft of a motor vehicle and 9 counts of hit-and-run. He posted bail of $80,000 and was released on Sunday, September 22.
