TERRYTOWN, La. (AP) — A Louisiana man has been given four consecutive life sentences after he pleaded guilty to beating his girlfriend and three children to death with a hammer.
Jefferson Parish District Attorney Paul D. Connick Jr. said Terrance Leonard, 36, pleaded guilty Thursday to four counts of first-degree murder, news outlets reported. Those killed were 32-year-old Kristina Riley, her 14-year-old daughter, her 10-year-old son and her 9-year-old niece.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joseph Lopinto described the attack as “pure evil.” It happened on March 6, 2019, in Terrytown.
Authorities said Leonard admitted to attacking the children as they slept and then waiting for Riley to return home from work. Later that morning, Leonard’s mother found Riley and the children with head trauma and called the sheriff’s office.
Deputies said Riley, her son and niece were pronounced dead inside the apartment. Her 14-year-old daughter died days later at a hospital.
Leonard also pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and attempted first-degree murder of another of Riley’s daughters, who was 12 at the time of the attack.
In connection with Leonard’s pleas, prosecutors agreed to not seek the death penalty, Connick’s office said.
State District Judge Ray Steib gave Leonard the four life sentences plus 50 years in prison for attempted first-degree murder and 40 years for obstruction of justice.
