CIUDAD VICTORIA, Mexico (AP) — Gunmen kidnapped 4 U.S. citizens who crossed into Mexico from Texas last week to buy medicine but were caught in a shootout that killed at least 1 Mexican citizen, U.S. & Mexican officials said Monday.
The 4 were in a white minivan with North Carolina license plates. They came under fire on Friday shortly after entering the city of Matamoros from Brownsville, Texas.
“All 4 Americans were placed in a vehicle & taken from the scene by armed men,” the FBI said. A $50,000 reward for the victims’ return & the arrest of the kidnappers is being offered.
A woman driving in Matamoros saw what appeared to be the shooting and abduction. She asked not to be identified for fear of reprisal.
The scene illustrates the terror that has prevailed for years in Matamoros, a city dominated by factions of the Gulf cartel who often fight among themselves. Amid the violence, thousands of Mexicans have disappeared just in Tamaulipas state, where Matamoros is located.
The woman said she saw the white minivan get hit by another vehicle near an intersection, then gunfire rang out.
Another SUV rolled up & several armed men hopped out.
“All of a sudden the gunmen were in front of us,” she said. “I entered a state of shock, nobody honked their horn, nobody moved. Everybody must have been thinking the same thing, ‘if we move they will see us, or they might shoot us.’”
She said the gunmen forced a woman, who was able to walk, into the back of a pickup truck. Another person was carried to the truck by the gunmen but could still move his head.
“The other 2 they dragged across the pavement, we don’t know if they were alive or dead,” she said.
President Joe Biden had been informed of the situation.
Tamaulipas state’s many border crossings with Texas make it lucrative for the cartels that move drugs, migrants & guns between Mexico & the U.S.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — Apparently false fears of a shooting at a rap concert in Rochester, New York, sent a crowd surging toward the exits, killing 1 person & injuring 9 others.
The injuries at Sunday night’s concert featuring rappers GloRilla & Finesse2tymes were caused by people being trampled, Police Chief David M. Smith said at a news briefing Monday. “We do not have any evidence of gunshots being fired or of anyone being shot or stabbed at the scene.”
As the concert at Rochester’s Main Street Armory ended just after 11 p.m., people exiting the venue began to surge dangerously, Smith said. Police made their way inside & found 3 women with critical injuries, he said.
A 33-year-old woman died died at a hospital & the other 2 women were in critical condition Monday. 7 additional people were taken to hospitals & treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.
“What began last night as a night of live music & fun for the performer GloRilla ended in tragedy with 1 person dead & 2 more fighting for their lives,” the chief said.
While there is no evidence of shots being fired, Smith said, police are investigating several possible causes of the fatal surge, including “possibly crowd size, shots fired, pepper spray & other contributing factors.”
GloRilla, a Memphis native whose 2022 song “F.N.F. (Let’s Go)” with Hitkidd was nominated for a Grammy for best rap performance, tweeted that she was “praying everybody is ok.”

LAKELAND, Fla. (CBS12) — Investigators say a Florida teen and self-proclaimed rapper made a video to brag about the killing of a rival gang member.
La'Darion Chandler, 19, is being held without bond on charges of first-degree murder, convicted delinquent in possession of a firearm & aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office said Chandler shot 33-year-old John McGee last December.
Investigators said McGee "was mean mugging" the other gang members when he was shot in the back. While at the hospital, McGee refused to take the medicine he needed to help his body heal. He also refused to cooperate with investigators.
The sheriff's office said Chandler, the murder suspect, had 7 prior felony arrests & 5 misdemeanor arrests. He was first arrested at age 11 & detained in a Juvenile Detention facility on 3 occasions.
In his most recent stay in a juvenile facility, Chandler spent 12 months behind bars.
32 days after getting out, investigators said Chandler shot McGee.
After the initial shooting, the sheriff's office had a tough time getting information. No one would talk to detectives.
A break came weeks later when detectives arrested Chandler for pulling a gun on someone in the same area of the shooting.
When detectives served the first-degree murder warrant, the sheriff's office said Chandler's hard-core demeanor changed.
"He started crying like a baby that lost his pacifier," said Judd.
At a news conference on Thursday, the sheriff's office played a portion of the rap video made by Chandler.
The sheriff's office bleeped out the bad words: "N---a tried to run, I hit his back. Thought I shoot like a Mac. Dirt a-- dead n----s knowing where to find me at."
BOCA RATON, Fla. (CBS12) — A woman made an unusual request during a Planning & Zoning Board meeting in Boca Raton on Thursday night.
It happened after a presentation related to a motion to approve an ordinance to amend city code for the bulk storage of flammable liquids.
The board chairman asked the audience if anyone had any questions.
The woman stood up, raised her hand & walked to the microphone. An elderly man with a cane walked behind her to the podium.
Once there, she identified herself as Ashley Cream.
The woman gave some numbers about how she believes Florida had the largest per capita population of "Sugar Daddies" in the US, with Miami, Palm Beach & Boca with the highest concentration of "these aged benefactors."
The woman said they're helpful to the economy.
"Sugar Daddies, both gay & straight, & yes, even Sugar Mommies, are responsible for college educations, cars, homes, rents, jets & the occasional body enhancement."
The woman asked the board to decree a "Sugar Daddy and Mommy Appreciation Day" on March 10.
"That's a city council issue," responded Planning & Zoning Board chair, Arnold Sevell.
The woman & her elderly guest left the podium. She later wheeled him out of the chambers in a wheelchair.

WALTERBORO, S.C. (AP) — In the culmination of the once-prominent lawyer’s fall from grace, Alex Murdaugh was sentenced to life in prison without parole Friday after being convicted of murdering his wife & son.
“As I tell you again, I respect this court. But I am innocent," Murdaugh said before sentencing. "I would never under any circumstances hurt my wife Maggie & I would never under any circumstances hurt my son Paul-Paul.”
“And it might not have been you. It might have been the monster you become,” when taking large amounts of opiates, Newman replied, noting Murdaugh’s decades-long addiction to painkillers.
“The depravity, the callousness, the selfishness of these crimes are stunning. The lack of remorse & the effortless way in which he is, including here, sitting right over there in this witness stand — your honor, a man like that, a man like this man, should never be allowed to be among free, law abiding citizens,” Prosecutor Creighton Waters said.
The Colleton County jury deliberated for less than 3 hours before finding Murdaugh guilty of killing his 22-year-old son, Paul, with a shotgun & his 52-year-old wife, Maggie, with a rifle on June 7, 2021.
Prosecutors didn’t have the weapons used to kill the Murdaughs or other direct evidence like confessions or blood spatter. But they had a mountain of circumstantial evidence, including the video putting Murdaugh at the scene of the killings 5 minutes before his wife & son stopped using their cellphones forever.
The now-disbarred attorney admitted stealing millions of dollars from the family firm & clients, saying he needed the money to fund his drug habit. Before he was charged with murder, Murdaugh was in jail awaiting trial on about 100 other charges ranging from insurance fraud to tax evasion.

San Benito, Texas (CNN) —Raul Rodriguez says he’ll never forget the moment he realized his life was built on a lie.
It all began in April 2018 when federal investigators showed him a Mexican birth certificate with his name on it.
His confirmed what Rodriguez had feared as soon as he saw the paperwork. The US birth certificate he’d used for decades was fraudulent. Rodriguez wasn’t a US citizen. He was an undocumented immigrant.
Rodriguez says he had no idea he’d been born in Mexico before his father’s confession that day, but he knew immediately how serious the situation was. He’d spent nearly 2 decades working for the US government at the border.
He’d helped deport thousands of people while working for US Customs and Border Protection & for the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
He lost his job at CBP, his friends in law enforcement, his sense of self. He hasn’t seen his father since that day in April 2018 & says he never wants to speak with him again.
Rodriguez knew deportation to Mexico would mean leaving his wife, & children & 5 grandchildren behind.
Rodriguez says years of federal background checks never turned up his Mexican birth certificate. It only came to light when Rodriguez filed a visa application for his brother..
The CBP fired him in 2019 because he wasn’t a US citizen & therefore no longer met the requirements to work as an officer.
Rodriguez is no longer working & relies on the disability benefits he receives due to a head injury sustained during his time in the Navy.
In November a judge had said she planned to rule in his favor & grant him cancellation of removal. But the law allows only 4,000 of those cases to be approved each year.
It could be years before he has a document declaring he’s in the country legally & years after that until he’s able to become a US citizen.
He knows this is his best shot for staying in the country; a previous application for citizenship through his wife was rejected.
Brooklyn, New York rapper and BSB Records CEO, Troy Ave, comes through with an official music video for his new fire single titled "Belly of the Beast."
