NEW YORK (AP) — A federal jury in New York concluded Thursday that British singer Ed Sheeran didn’t steal key components of Marvin Gaye’s classic 1970s tune “Let’s Get It On” when he created his hit song “Thinking Out Loud.”
As the jury answered the single question of whether Sheeran proved he didn’t infringe upon the copyright in the affirmative. He then spoke for about 10 minutes with the plaintiffs, including the daughter of Ed Townsend, who co-created the 1973 soul classic with Gaye. They hugged & smiled with each other.
The verdict came after a 2-week trial that featured a courtroom performance by Sheeran as the singer insisted, sometimes angrily, that the trial was a threat to all musicians who create their own music.
Townsend’s heirs said in their lawsuit that “Thinking Out Loud” had “striking similarities” & “overt common elements” that made it obvious that it had copied “Let’s Get It On.”
Sheeran’s song, which came out in 2014, was a hit, winning a Grammy for song of the year. His lawyers argued that the songs shared versions of a similar & unprotectable chord progression freely available to all songwriters.
Gaye was killed in 1984 at age 44, shot by his father as he tried to intervene in a fight between his parents.
TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Former NBA star Shawn Kemp pleaded not guilty Thursday to an assault charge after prosecutors accused him of shooting at a man while attempting to retrieve a stolen cell phone.
Kemp was released without bail following the arraignment in Pierce County Superior Court in Washington state.
He was arrested after the shooting in a parking lot outside the Tacoma Mall on March 8 & released the following day pending further investigation. No one was injured & Kemp’s lawyers insisted he returned fire in self defense after tracking & trying to retrieve a cellphone that had been stolen from him earlier that day.
However, a probable cause statement by Tacoma police, filed along with 1st-degree assault charges last month, did not indicate Kemp was shot at. It said some of his statements were not corroborated by surveillance video & that just 13 minutes before he arrived at the mall, he sent a text message saying, “I’m about to shoot this (expletive).”
The document said Kemp told police that after being shot at he went back to his own vehicle, parked several spots away, to get his own gun. But the video showed that he was armed with the weapon when he approached the parked Toyota 4Runner where he had tracked his phone.
The statement said he fired 3 times into the Toyota & then threw his gun into some bushes. The driver of the 4Runner appeared to duck 1 of the shots & eventually drove off. Only about 5 minutes elapsed from the time Kemp arrived until the time the 4Runner left.
Kemp was a 6-time NBA all-star & played for the Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland, Portland & Orlando.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- 2 10-year-old children were found working unpaid at a McDonald's restaurant in Louisville, the U.S. Department of Labor said.
According to a news release, investigators from the department's Wage and Hour Division found 2 10-year-old workers at a McDonald's. 3 Kentucky McDonald's franchise operators violated federal labor laws.
Bauer Food LLC, Archways Richwood LLC & Bell Restaurant Group I LLC, which are 3 separate franchisees that operates 62 McDonald's locations in Kentucky, Indiana, Maryland & Ohio, employed 305 children to work more than the legally permitted hours.
“Too often, employers fail to follow the child labor laws that protect young workers,” said Wage and Hour Division District Director Karen Garnett-Civils in Louisville, Kentucky. “Under no circumstances should there ever be a 10-year-old child working in a fast-food kitchen around hot grills, ovens & deep fryers.”

The investigation found Bauer Food LLC, which operates 10 McDonald's locations in Louisville, employed 24 minors under the age of 16 to work more hours than legally permitted. 2 10-year-old children were working as late as 2 a.m. unpaid.

HENRYETTA, Okla. (AP) — Authorities searching a rural Oklahoma property for 2 missing teenagers discovered the bodies of 7 people, including the suspected remains of the teens & a convicted sex offender who was sought along with them.
Okmulgee County Sheriff Eddy Rice said the state medical examiner will have to confirm the identities of the victims, but “we believe that we have found the persons.” He said Monday the bodies were believed to include those of 14-year-old Ivy Webster & 16-year-old Brittany Brewer, along with Jesse McFadden, the felon authorities had said the teens were traveling with.
He declined to provide details of how they died or other details.
The bodies were found Monday during a search near the town of Henryetta.
The advisory for Webster and Brewer had said they were reportedly seen traveling with McFadden, who was on the state’s sex offender registry. Oklahoma Department of Corrections prison records show McFadden was convicted of first-degree rape in 2003 & released in October 2020.
Court records show McFadden was scheduled to appear in court Monday for the start of a jury trial on charges of soliciting sexual conduct with a minor and possession of child pornography.
Brittany Brewer’s father said that 1 of the bodies discovered was his daughter.
“Brittany was an outgoing person. She was actually selected to be Miss Henryetta ... coming up in July for this Miss National Miss pageant in Tulsa. And now she ain’t gonna make it because she’s dead. She’s gone,” Nathan Brewer said.
